That search effort was not so difficult. Yes, it was the ocean, but not the "deep" ocean and we have good technology to locate such materials. The crash was such a tragedy, we still feel the effects when we watch footage like this, even now.
As the son of a long time private pilot, one can never over prepare for the possibility of a disaster. Experienced pilots crash, too. JFK was only moderately experienced. It's really a shame because he was a likeable, fascinating guy.
He actually was very skilled and had more IFR hours than required. Sad the narrative stated otherwise. Two Mistakes: not switching the gas tank load/to distribute the weight. And failure to enter the radio frequency of the airport correctly. he was one number off. he never heard the ATC tower. at 17 miles he should have heard and made contact.
I know we all hoped they were safe somewhere waiting to be rescued. What a sad ending for all 3 of them. I’m glad his mom wasn’t here to see her son taken away too and she didn’t want John to fly a plane for exactly that reason. And poor Caroline now has lost her whole family. Now she’s a survivor!

@wahlert1993 ....And John, Jr. never took the time to get instrument trained. He couldn't read the instruments. And he was flying without insurance. Trump wouldn't have authorized the search if he were still playing President when this happened. Not for JFK Jr that is. If it had been a high profile right wing nut job who was missing at sea, yes.
I was living on the coastline along the Connecticut Rhode Island border. HIs plane likely would have passed in sight of where I was that hazy summer night. Funny thing is, my brother and I had been playing the European Air War combat sim against each other the night of JFK Jr's crash. We were in a turning dogfight in hazy conditions at dusk in the sim and whenever our planes faced away from the sunset we lost sight of the horizon and all sense of up and down. It was very disorienting and you had to rely completely on your instruments to keep oriented until you turned back towards the setting sun. When I learned JFK Jr's plane had gone down in the early evening of that hazy night I immediately remembered how easily disoriented I got in that flight sim and wondered if the same thing had happened to him. It turned out that was exactly what happened. A strange experience.
I left Nantucket that evening heading west towards KISP MacArthur Airport on Long Island at 8000’ in a Falcon 900. I went VFR because it was a short trip and the weather was good but when I lifted off it was totally BLACK no moon, stars , nothing so as a professional pilot I just used the flight instruments and kept going. Spacial disorientation can bite a pilot very quickly. I've almost bit the dust from it too flying in pitch dark with zero outside references. Gotta put your trust in the instruments and even though your body is trying to defy them, you have to trust them. JFK Jr's plane, the PA32 Saratoga, is a high performance single engine airplane and quite quick and when you get out of control and into the spiral of death, there's no saving it. I remember feeling so horribly for all 3 because they knew they were gonna die as that airplane headed towards the ocean.
I remember hearing their plane was missing and feared the worst. Very sad, such a waste of 3 young lives. I've always heard that small planes are dangerous. I know he loved to fly, but damn, not in that weather. RIP
Small aircraft aren't dangerous so long as you fly them within their limitations and within your limitations. The aircraft was perfectly fine for the trip, but not the pilot 😞

@@debbiemullen2574 Nope, statistically small plane crashes are still rare enough the make news broadcasts, yet no auto crashes are ever covered unless they are particularly horrific. Das habe ich bis heute noch in dankbarer Erinnerung, denn das war ein großer 💕 Herzenswunsch von mir!
The government report on the accident covers in detail what happen. Spatial Disorientation. In complete darkness you have to fly based on instrument readings because you can become disoriented and think you are flying higher when you are actually going lower, then you overcompensate by pushing the plane down which makes matters worse until the plane slams into the ground or in this case ocean. He got caught in those conditions when he left the coastline lights and flew into total darkness. He should not have flown that time or took along a pilot skilled at flying based on instrument readings. Unfortunately, you don't get a second chance when you make that kind of mistake.
The fact that they were cremated is so strange. Is John jr the only Kennedy to have been cremated ? He could have been burried with his parents and his dead brother Patrick in Arlington.
Well he was the beloved only Son that we all saw grow up ... after our president and his father, was assassinated. Yeah, he was special to not only his immediate family but to his American family as well ..
I waited listening to AM radio in Chicago everyday waiting to hear they found them alive. As every day passed, the more I knew the inevitable. America's prince was gone. My thoughts and prayers go out to Caroline, and the mother of Carolyn and her sister Lauren. Such a tragic accident.
So the bodies were submerged in water for 3 days but were able to be identified by autopsy? Would seem to think that they were fish food pretty quickly following the tragic accident. So many odd things surround this event. A huge loss
I don't believe this video 1 bit. There's too much at stake, it's too big. That photo of the plane looked like it had been in the water for years. The corrosion and decay of the aircraft makes this story to be misleading and deceptive. To say something is fishy is an understatement.
I remember when this happened. We were having a family reunion at a beach house on the NC coast. I think we were staying at Emerald Isle. This seemed to be the only thing on the news at the time.
I had a conversation with a pilot from Plymouth Massachusetts. He told me his friends worked on that recovery mission. He was told, lobsters had been eating their faces while at the bottom of the ocean.. Probably why they were cremated so quickly
I was surprised at how sick and upset I felt while he was missing. I’m not a sycophantic-type person and had really never given him much thought. I guess he just had been so present my whole life; we were the same age, and his father’s murder is my very first memory. Sad.

Samantha only got her social standing back when she met JFK Jr. one day while they were doing community clean up or something. NOW...this episode aired on the normal Saturday night slot on HBO. HBO showed the prior episode on the following Friday before the new show on Saturday night. JFK Jr. died sometime after the Saturday night showing of this show so by the time the Friday night recap came around they edited out JFK and added Leonardo DiCaprio as the guy that Samantha met to get her social standing back. Only die-hard Sex and the City watchers will remember this. RIP to him and the Bessett sisters.

Not a good idea to fly at night unless you are instrument rated and have many hours of night flying.
IIRC, his wife or SIL was very late to the airport.
He was waiting on Carolyn and her sister. Had they left on time, he would not have been flying in the dark.

That broke my heart when John F Kennedy his wife and sister-in-law died in that small airplanes don't fly at night if you not professional pilot to fly any aircraft. Rip 🙏 🙏

I flew a jet into Santa Barbara in twilight a few days later under very similar conditions. I remember keeping my scan mostly inside on instruments until we were lined up with the runway. @wahlert1993 ....And John, Jr. never took the time to get instrument trained. He couldn't read the instruments. And he was flying without insurance. And he refused to let a veteran pilot come along with him at the small airport in New Jersey. Those are the reasons that Ann Freeman, mother of Lauren and Carolyn, sued John, Jr's estate.

@@debbiemullen2574 Nope, statistically small plane crashes are still rare enough the make news broadcasts, yet no auto crashes are ever covered unless they are particularly horrific.
