I remember this morning so well. As someone who lost both of my older siblings too soon, my first thought when the news announced his plane was missing was, “Oh, my God. His poor sister.” I was unaware that Carolyn Bissett’s sister, who died with them, had left behind a twin. Another person who lost 2 siblings that day. I felt this tragedy deeply. I was glad John’s mother didn’t live to see this happen.

Jackie was a shallow parasite. She married Onassis who loved her just for his money and ignored him while she sucked it up. He got smart, tossed her out with nothing and made sure the worthless wench got nothing when he died. Nobody who knew her had any respect for the woman who said MLK should know his place and was so stupid she modeled clothes while hubby banged his secretaries, movie stars and whatever moved.

Funny thing is, my brother and I had been playing the European Air War combat sim against each other the night of JFK Jr's crash. We were in a turning dogfight in hazy conditions at dusk in the sim and whenever our planes faced away from the sunset we lost sight of the horizon and all sense of up and down. It was very disorienting and you had to rely completely on your instruments to keep oriented until you turned back towards the setting sun. When I learned JFK Jr's plane had gone down in the early evening of that hazy night I immediately remembered how easily disoriented I got in that flight sim and wondered if the same thing had happened to him. It turned out that was exactly what happened. A strange experience.

Spacial disorientation can bite a pilot very quickly. I've almost bit the dust from it too flying in pitch dark with zero outside references. Gotta put your trust in the instruments and even though your body is trying to defy them, you have to trust them. JFK Jr's plane, the PA32 Saratoga, is a high performance single engine airplane and quite quick and when you get out of control and into the spiral of death, there's no saving it. I remember feeling so horribly for all 3 because they knew they were gonna die as that airplane headed towards the ocean.

The government report on the accident covers in detail what happen. Spatial Disorientation. In complete darkness you have to fly based on instrument readings because you can become disoriented and think you are flying higher when you are actually going lower, then you overcompensate by pushing the plane down which makes matters worse until the plane slams into the ground or in this case ocean. He got caught in those conditions when he left the coastline lights and flew into total darkness. He should not have flown that time or took along a pilot skilled at flying based on instrument readings. Unfortunately, you don't get a second chance when you make that kind of mistake.

First of all, NO ONE EVER called John Kennedy Jr. "John -John" that came about when a reporter mistook when the President called is son, John to get his attention but when his son didn't respond , he called his son, to John again and the it was mistook as "John-John". I remember those days vividly. Very tough weekend . Gone too soon. R.I.P John Kennedy Jr.

At about 2:30 my pager started! You got some of the facts screwed up. The C 130 was a CG aircraft out of E City! It arrived after the confusion over the scene caused by news helios, Air National Guard HH 60’s , and the Coast Guard helios. It s function was air traffic control. By 6 am the CG had located floating aircraft tires. I directed my agency’s initial response including boats and crews from Falmouth, Boston, New Bedford and the Vineyard. It was already too late and it was quickly became a dive operation. I saw the plane later at the Coast Guard base. Truly a tragic event.
