    they created belgium because there were always troubles between catholics and protestants people, so they hoped with a new country between france and the netherlands that the wars between france and the netherlands(protestants) would also come to an end. that's how i heard it from historians and in school. only one of the reasons of course

      philippe herman never heard that theory as there was no war between the Dutch and the French (except at the end of the napoleonic period)
      Belgium was created as a buffer state between France and Britain (primarily, together with the Netherlands in 1815) and remained a buffer state in 1830, but this time between Britain and France on one hand and Germany on the other.
      What you're talking about might refer to what happens a few centuries before, when the current Netherlands (more or less) took its independence from Spain (they were protestants) and Belgium that remained under Spanish catholic control
