How odd - no comments? I call myself a 'EuroScot' these days, rather than just Scottish. My mother grew up on Brussels, Belgium, adopted by a French-teaching Dutch and Flemish pair of women - with a few more girls from various countries. Her natural mother spoke Limburghish, as with this part of relatives. Although known, they don't tell us who our grandfather is. [One cousin says he's from a nearby village, another that he was an aristocrat.] The great divide between French and Dutch-speaking was explained with my mother's relative or 'half-cousin' identifying with the 'hard-working Germanic' side, but in the family tree is where I found the name I use here, Dubois or du Bois [from the wood]. [English now say 'woods', though originally Little Red Riding Hood went through the 'wood']. The Belgian cousins' family name is from a Scottish one, as a boatload of the family came to Belgium about four hundred years ago. [I'm told]. [I hear from Scottish family friends how his family was originally Dutch and his wife's from France. So, there's been a lot of mixing people around in Europe, it seems. There's some 'hostility' towards the 2% of French-speaking 'aristocratic families' - the highest percentage in any country. My half-cousin said we would not be welcome if we came from Australia and knocked on their door - to do withmy mother being born out of wedlock. The aristocratic grandfather angle now makes sense, as my mother was born out of wedlock, and raised in a group with fourteen girls by a countess and baroness - but spoken of as being home for orphans, in Auderghem. Speaking French in a Dutch-speaking area, and learning English in Scotland - not many Australians understood her accent. Yes, this RUclips does help a little, other sources present Belgians as tight-knit and difficult to get to know. It's a conundrum where GLBT marriage and law changes coming early, while newer immigrants in ghettos are more likely those who would to be intolerant of GLBT people.

I am American living in Flanders. One of the most surprising things about Flanders is the number of dialects in a small geographic area. I wonder if it is because of a history of each town being insular.

Really interesting to watch. I've been told that the river Rhine is a sort of divide even in the Netherlands in their way of speaking. It must be already more similar to the Flemish dialects. The Dutch and Belgians I know in my town in Spain point out the things they have un common but it may also be due to living in Spain.

Je je suis pas belge et peut-être ce n'est pas mon droit de critiquer "les" wallons. Néanmoins, il semble que beaucoup de wallons ne font aucun effort d'apprendre le néerlandais. Je ne l'ai comprend pas. On donne l'opportunité d'apprendre une langue fans le système educativa et on ne le profite pas. Maitriser les deux langues est une grande avantage pour trouver les postes de travail et aussi donne la possibilité de gagner une segonde identité. On peut aussi se relationner avec les néerlandais dans un voyage ou découvrir plus facilement les ex-colonies néerlandais.

I love the rolled r's you hear in Bruges. 'Grote' in the Netherlands is definitely a throat clearance job. Whereas in Flemish its a lovely sound, in my opinion. I love both parts of Belgium and they should celebrate their uniqueness. The whole nation is united in producing the best beer known to mankind. Lang leve Belgie! Vive la Belgique!

what an very interesting youtube....... im flemish living in canada for 34 years and i can relate.... many walloons, who immigrated to canada or the states still have the same attitude no matter how long they have moved away... i was a member of the "belgian" club in vancouver, many moons ago and most spoke french although they were from gent or oostende or beveren waas.... just nose up in the air... as if they were embarrassed to be speaking flemish.... and they still think french is more "classy" .., and i do speak french after 2 glasses of wine.... its rusty though... but we got 1 hour french a day in elementary MANDATORY!!!! KONINKLIJK ATHENEUM IN MORTSEL.... Mevrouw Carpentier was the teacher....and yes i think the flemish are being plucked and robbed by the walloons... for years already... they should separate and the sooner the better!!!!

The dutch and the flemish are one people, divided only a few hundred years ago by religion and politics. Flemish people do not like living in one country with french speaking walloons,. There is nothing that they have in common, only some foriegn royalty that lives in Brussels.

I'm from the Netherlands, and I find it a shame that they try to abolish ge/gij in the flemish language. It's totally correct language, and I think you don't have to prevent to speak these words. Just use them! Even in the Netherlands, ge/gij is still used in the provinces Zuid-Gelderland, Noord-Braband en Limburg.

There is no standard Flemish, the standard language in Belgium is Nederlands or, as we call it, Dutch. Tussentaal is not standardized and varies regionally with influences on standard Dutch from local dialects.

Belgium was created in 1830 in a military’s coup by the French army and, blessed by the Vatican. With the intend to separate Wallonia - a catholic French dialect (Walloon) speaking part of the then Netherlands. The result expected from the secret break away coup was to destroy or break the economical success of the Netherlands all together. The Netherlands of the 16th, 17th and early 18th century were a busy and succesfull nation. While the Walloon speaking regions were not well integrated in The Netherlands, the regions north of (now called Flanders, were then a vibrant part (Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp, Brussels) of the Netherlands. After the July11th coup, the French army was able include it into what they called La Belgique. It was later baptized to be ‘Les Flanders,’ also a mainly catholic part in the new county: La Belgique. Still hard to digest for the Dutch speaking Fleming was/is- after La Belgique had been fabricated - all education was to exclusively French only. In fact, Dutch was illegal any where in La Belgique. A Protest movement lead by Hendrick Conscience managed te authorities to permit ‘Flemish dialects’ to be spoken in elementary schools;of Flanders. In fact, the real name for Flanders was and, still is: ZUIDELIJKE NEDERLANDEN, (Netherlands South)however, La Belgique did not allow, not recognize that terminology. They also called the language spoken north of Wallonia: an ‘unidentifiable collection of dialects.’ .The early creation of La Belgique set off huge protests, even battles of fighting French military. On July14 (French National holiday) hundreds of French soldiers were fed drunk to be killed with pitch forks - their sleep - by farmers, (Boerenkrijg - Overmere Donk). Only In 1947 La Belgique officially recognized that the Dutch was the official language of the majority (65%) of its citizen. Again, only In 1956 Belgium translated for the first time - after 126years existence - is constitution in Dutch, 65% of its citizenry. Trust, the facts I mentioned - if in doubt, please verify. Flanders and its Dutch speaking population have endured and survived a more than 100 year period of recurring genocide attempts. All this cooking up was done by the French, the Vatican and later (1832) of Germany. The flag of Germany is more than very similar to the flag of La Belqique. In order to have La Belgique recognized by Germany, “La Republique Belge” needed retrofitted into a kingdom: Germany planted its king in Brussels, ‘King-Leopold-Von-Saksen-Koburg I.’ The sooner Flanders breaks away from La Belgique, the sooner justice will be done. La Belgique was never a marriage of convenience, it was an arranged marriage leading to a cultural and economical miscarriage.

It's wrong to say "Belgian" indicating that word as a language. Belgium has 3 national languages so to say "Belgian" and to mean Flemish by that is wrong. It's either Dutch or Flemish but most Belgian Dutch speakers are more often using the word Flemish to differentiate themselves from the Dutch speakers from the Netherlands. Basically Dutch and Flemish is the same language but pronounced differently. Often Flemish, to foreign ears, will sound smoother and less guteral. The typical g and r sound that would often distinguish a Netherlands Dutch speaker are not present in flemish.
