I loved this movie and I hope the evil BB-8 droid returns to stare menacingly at rebels again. The way it rolled out in front of the tracking device was the best villain entrance I've seen since Megamind.

I think this was a great Star Wars movie but it does have some frustrating issues, still a great movie though. When I say frustrating issues I'm referring to scenes like when Rose saves Finn from sacrificing himself. At first glance this may seem touching to some and she delivers her heartfelt message about saving what we love and not killing what we hate, but if you were paying attention the last two hours you'd immediately take issue with her selfishly stopping someone from making the ultimate sacrifice to save everyone (just like her sister did) just because she loved them. When she first meets Finn she immediately stuns him for trying to run away when her sister just died saving everyone else and extensively shames him for his actions, yet does something far more selfish when he's finally doing the right thing. If not for Luke saving everyone, her and Laura Dern refusing to communicate with Poe (like Superman refusing to talk to Batman in BvS) would've been the death of the whole rebellion.
On another note PHASMA. Really bummed about how she barely got any screentime again and quickly got jobbed out by Finn, an ex-trooper who only recently got promoted from janitorial staff to actual combat trooper and barely lasted one mission. BUT she can turn this all around. I thought about how she should've been dead at the end of TFA from being in a trash chute of an exploding planet, and once again they throw her into a fiery death pit at the end of TLJ. But what if rather than this being poor writing with no explanation, she does come back in 9 without sullying those previous deaths? What if there was more than one Phasma? I'm just throwing this out there in the hopes that it reaches Abrams but if the Phasma we knew was actually just one of several elite Phasma clones (let's say there was 5 and now there's 3 left) I'd be so ready for that reveal. Phasma never flinches and doesn't seem to be too concerned with failure but perhaps she has a kind of "insurance" that even if she dies, her others will live on. The clone armies seem to have been replaced for some reason, but her armor indicates that she is clearly unique, so why not have her be some kind of elite clone unit. After all her armor is made of the same plating as a ship from the prequels, so maybe that isn't her only tie. Would definitely elevate her from jobber who exists to make Finn look strong to a role with actual staying power.
Still though, overall great movie, Kylo Ren and Rey's scenes were the highlight of the whole movie, and he is the most compelling villain the Star Wars movie universe has ever had.

Gonna be honest and say this is copy-pasted from a comment I made in a different video, but here is my perspective on Phasma:
Look, I know everybody thinks Phasma is cool because she has the special armor, and we all love Gwendoline Christie in Game of Thrones, and we want to see her do something cool. But people need to come to grips with the simple fact that she is a MINOR SIDE CHARACTER. She was always intended to be. It's not that they "didn't do enough with her," it's that the movie is already plenty long as it is, and not every person with a flashy outfit needs to have a complex character arc and history in order to serve their role. If we were meant to care about this character on a deeper level, she would have taken her helmet off in The Force Awakens and had a lot more screen time. And her "disposal" wouldn't have been a funny nod to the original trilogy that the movie didn't even bother to show us.
This is the exact same thing that happened with Boba Fett. He was a complete nobody who barely had any screen time, but people paid way too much attention to him because he had a cool costume and nifty gadgets. So Lucas caved and gave the audience what it thought it wanted, and we all know how that worked out.
Who Phasma is isn't important. It's about what she represents. She is about the strict military rank, and the authority of the First Order. She is about absolute loyalty, and the emotionless anonymity of the soldier. She hates Finn not just because he turned "traitor," but because he rejected her authority and shook off his anonymity to be an individual. Finn's existence demeans everything she stands for, disrespects her title, questions the superiority of the First Order, and exposes their military machine as flawed and imperfect. Phasma bitterly resents that she let one of her own unit slip away, and every second he roams free fills her with disgrace and shame.
That's PLENTY to know about a minor character who isn't central to the plot. I think Phasma was used very well in the movie, as a foil to Finn. She is the haunting personification of his former life -- everything he hates and fears about the First Order. Of course they fight hand-to-hand. It's become personal to them. They each want to beat the other, not just as opponents, but as rivals. Each wants to show they are better than the other. When Finn bashes her in the face, he literally and figuratively breaks through her facade. We don't need to see her face, we just need to see that she has one, so they can look each other in the eye one last time. And that is the moment where Phasma dies, because she has served her entire purpose as a narrative device and the movie does not need her anymore. It's not her story, it's a chapter of Finn's story that has come to a close.

After rewatching it...Kylo was great. Rey was just fine. Luke being so beaten down was interesting and good. Poe and Rose was complete unnecessary garbage to me.
And I had zero expectations going in and it was decent. Not great, not bad.

Rey going to train with Luke on a deserted planet (Luke going to train with Yoda). Rey looking for answers about her parents in the island (Luke looking for answers about his father in the swamp). Rey voluntarily getting caught so she can turn Kylo and him bringing Rey to Snoke, where they together kill Snoke (Luke voluntarily getting caught so he can turn Vader and him bringing Luke to Sidius, where they together kill Sidius).

Oh man, I didn't even think about Leia's comment towards the end: "Why are you looking at me? Follow him!" She clearly has been training him up to be the next leader of the resistance. His "demotion" was meant to serve as a lesson, because she needs him to not be so impulsive and willing to send waves of people into danger on a whim. There's no way she would have put up with his repeated shit, otherwise. She knows they need someone like him taking the lead, but there are a few kinks to work out first.
Although it is sad to see Carrie Fisher now passed away, ironically this kind of enhances this aspect of the story. Obviously, they need to come up with some quick excuse for why Leia is now dead, and Poe will be forced to adopt a leadership role before he was ready. It will be sort of an "I'm not ready for this, but these are the cards we've been dealt" kind of thing.

@34:00 Why didnt Laura Dern just tell poe.....

    • @Bones_
      @Bones_ 6 лет назад +1

I don't but as Henry points out unintentionally, the whole reason their plan failed was because she didn't tell Poe or anyone else apparently, and Del Toro's character sold them out. Had she told them the plan (yes they because in addition to Poe he was able to unite others to hold them prisoner) then they never would have gone to find the codebreaker and brought back someone who could sell out their cloaking to the First Order. So Laura Dern while dying in a blaze of glory really is the reason a bunch of transports got blown up and they were cornered on the mining planet. It's honestly the Batman V Superman plothole of this movie. If they had just talked and not been concerned with pomp and circumstance everything would've worked out.

To be fair, this is very often a major flaw in tons of stories -- and also a regular flaw in real life. :-/

But for someone who is supposed to be a high ranking authority figure is just seems like lazy writing. Making characters have particularly poor decision making when it comes to one singular choice when they otherwise are intelligent and have a very good plan is frustrating and feels like bad writing. Things shouldn't have to be forced.

As just a movie I thought it was very entertaining.
As a Star Wars movie I thought it was pretty good with the following criticisms:
-If they could have cut the whole thing down to two hours from two and half hours that the movie would have ended up even better.
-While I laughed at most of humorous scenes/lines this should be the absolute max humor allowed for any future SW movies.
-I get what was happening in the Leia super-woman scene and am fine what happened but am disappointed with how it was shot, it looked silly until the very last bit when she got to the door.
-The space chase dragged a bit. I get they had to make that part take long so the minor sub-plots could take place meantime but I feel like the First Order would have just jumped more Star Destroyers right in front of the Mon Calamari cruiser they were in.
Overall they are doing what is needed to be done to set up a Future for Star Wars that pays homage to its past while not remaining completely tethered to it.

hyperspace ramming ruins episodes 1 4 5 6 R1 7 and even 8 in their own ways. Ep. 1 droid control ship, just ram it, Death Star, just ram the turbo laser, Hoth base and Ion Canon, hyperspace ram them, New Death star and endor shield generator. 2 rammable targets. We need to take down this shield to get the death star plans off this planet, hyperspace ram. Death Planet? more like ram planet. 2 support crusiers are gonna get killed by Snokeship? 2 hyperspace missles.

Seriously you could or cut out an hour and a half of thay movie.
Nothing finn did had any point aaaand could of been avoided if general purple hair (one for the half dozen "important" characters they introduced only to kill off) told poe or anyone her plan.
Finn I'm force awakens seemed like a guy who won a contest to win a a role on starwars and this movie seemed the same.
And why the fuck would you free the animals on.casino world but not the slave children!?
The force can make you superman errr uh super woman?
The last half hour of fights were awesome even if they didn't use for force to fight a dozen men even though it(the force) was the key plot point in Rey or Kylo being powerful at all and the key point to murdering snoke.
Also it tried way too hard to be funny.
It was enjoyable, I'd go see it again for the kid at the end just to make sure he force pulled that broom but it's loosing it's luster on me
Also Leia is alive in the movies but not in real life sooooo that'll be fun to write outm

Leia surviving in space by for a very brief time by using the Force is something that has been done before in the Legends EU (not sure if anyone has done that in the new Canon) so it wasn't a complete ass pull. I think the real problem is that the scene just wasn't shot well and the whole super-woman thing looked very hokey. I did like how the very last part of the scene looked when she place her hand on the door and they opened it up.

This movie has a lower audience score on Rotten Tomatoes than The Phantom Menace.

Agreed. Rose was such a shitty shoe-d in character because of Chinese ownership and investment in these films.
The fact that they've taken it upon themselves to put in some kind of social inequality story was so fucking eye-rolling it was painful.
I don't want bullshit anti-capitalist "social commentary" in my fucking Star Wars.
