Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a 2023 American action adventure film directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote it with David Koepp and the writing team of Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. It is the fifth and final installment in the Indiana Jones film series and the sequel to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). It stars Harrison Ford, John Rhys-Davies, and Karen Allen reprising their roles as Indiana Jones, Sallah, and Marion Ravenwood, respectively, while new cast members include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.

As an aside I kinda love how Ford has just been sooo done with a lot of nerd questions, from his IDGAF response about force ghosts, to being utterly baffled at what the heck a universe 616 even is.

I'd argue that great Films never die; they just want to be remembered fondly. Modern Hollywood drags them into the limelight again to try to milk some more profit out of them, more often than not sullying their legacy in the process.

It will forever be hilarious to me that Spielberg was so pissed about what Shia said about Crystal Skull, his character in the follow up gets killed off screen, which funnily also happened in transformers the last knight, a film he produced, so what are the odds.

Honestly Spielberg was slumming it direction wise on KOTCS I don't blame Shia for feeling like he did a disservice to the series but one also has to remember that Spielberg only did this movie because George wouldn't leave him alone about it Steven made it clear he was done with the series and it shows

There was one reason why I had no interest in watching this movie: Ford is in his 80s now and he just looks exhausted. It's like forcing your grandpa to run a marathon
I only saw it for completionist reasons, and it was way duller than I expected, so you're not missing out whatsoever.
This is a perfect example of corporate greed refusing to let something die so long as they can milk it for more. The only reason they would have done the ending the way they did is if they were thinking "but what if we want to make another sequel".
There's a bit more to it. Indiana Jones is a strange case in that it is a neglected series, but also one that gets pulled back out at random times. Had they wanted it to continue after Crusade, they could have done what the James Bond series did and recast Indiana Jones and do a new set of movies, but this is where the neglect comes in.
Spielberg has never cared for Indiana Jones and it shows. He never wanted to make Crystal Skull and had to be pressured into it by George Lucas. Also, unlike with Raiders, where Spielberg needed to make a hit after his last movie bombed, his reputation was more or less set in stone so he treated it more like a favor to George and a chance to see old friends.
This movie is the end result of this strange situation. People like Indiana Jones enough to want to see him again, but he's not an IP that is given much care by those who run it. As a result, we get a bland finale which satisfies nobody. It's sad because had the series ended with Last Crusade, we would have had a solid trilogy of great movies and if they had recast the lead and continued, the series would have been free to expand past a director who doesn't care and an actor who has aged out of the role.
@@ahatt96that all makes sense for the most part. However, they would never recast another actor as Indiana Jones because Harrison Ford has said before that when he dies, so does Indiana Jones. This indicates that he does not want the character to be played by someone else.

Corporate greed refusing to let go go off their cash cows does not need to be a bad thing. Look at Deadpool & Wolverine. The character Wolverine got a really good send off in Logan, funnily enough directed by the same person who directed this movie. Hugh was pulled back on board and it ended up being a very fun ride. If Disney wants to keep making these Indie movies, perhaps they could atleast try to scout for talented folks who genuinely care for the characters and the lore and then give them the creative freedom to create something magical.

It's because the actors in Barbie and Oppenheimer agreed to reduced salaries and there weren't any big action sequences in either films. With Indy, Disney agreed to pay huge salaries to the actors and did lots of big effects things those movies didn't have

Everyone will forget this movie existed soon.
To be honest with Sallah, it was always clear that even if he was Egyptian, he had quite strong ties to Britain (singing British songs, being quite anglicised in his mannerisms, having to leave Egypt in the post-colonial era (possibly due to the Suez Crisis, I'm not sure if it's ever actually established?). Being played by a Welsh actor, I always found it easy to assume he was probably of mixed heritage.
Oh yeah. People like Sallah were seen as British Occupation Collaborators at best; and as real Foreign-Allegiance threats to Egypt’s sovereignty, even before ‘56.
Those people in real life who didn’t have great personal wealth & connections, or the British refused to give refugee or dual-citizenship status. They normally ended up imprisoned (in horrid ex-occupation prisons) until they somehow “proved their innocence;” usually by denouncing their personal enemies to the same fate.
Hot take? Killing Shia LaBeouf was actually the most boring decision this movie made. The goddaughter could have easily have just been Indy's son who, during his own Indiana Jones adventures, went down the wrong path. Then we have Indy reconnecting with his son and re-establishing what it actually means to be an archaeologist. Hell, we could still do your idea for the ending and have *him* be the one to put his mom and dad in the museum.
The audience hated Mutt, that's why.

I actually hate that they killed off Mutt like that. Sure, he wasn't great, but just giving him the ax like that is so unceremonious
I personally do not like that either because while he wasn't the greatest character his offscreen death is just a reason for Indy to become miserable and that is just not fun to watch, the enjoyment of an Indiana Jones movie is that he does what he does because he loves the sense of adventure no matter how dangerous the mission is. If they want to write him out then they could just say he's off doing his own things in life instead of killing him off just to be used as a plot divice and a really bad one at that.
When they did it in KOTCS with his dad and Brody, at least it was because their actors had died since the last movie.
I agree, Indiana Jones 6 would be good, he rescues Mutt from a Vietnam prison camp.

Why do movies like this (Star Wars sequels) have to have beloved characters in abject misery when we see them again after all these years? It would be just fine for Indy to be pulled back into adventure from a life that wasn't complete horseshit.
Temple of Doom gets way too much hate and Crystal Skull. Temple of Doom is way better but Crystal Skull was a fun film but had a lot of rough edges. Temple of Doom still has the best soundtrack and love its dark tone to this day.
Plus a pretty good one liner: " Prepare to meet Kali, in Hell!"
Yeah, the Temple of Doom review is one of those where Doug just had know idea what he was talking about.

This is why Back to the Future remains one of my favourite 80's franchises as it never got rebooted or gotten a sequel. Robert Zemekis made sure of that.

They really dropped the ball here. AT LEAST Crystal Skull had a happy ending! What they should have done is have Indy Dean of the University now where he has written several books about his previous adventures which would later be adapted into the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, making him somewhat famous and wealthy. Him and Marion are thriving. Short Round who saw Indy as a father figure, followed in his footsteps to become an archaeologist as well. He discovers something mysterious and reaches out to Indy, they go on an adventure together and have a tender moment towards the end. Indy tells Short Round that he’s thinking of retiring. Him and Mutt are on good terms now and he’s much more matured. Mutt announces he’s going to be a dad. The movie ends with Indy passing his fedora to an adult Short Round to carry on his legacy, similar to the beginning of The Last Crusade. Now THAT would have been amazing!
Dude they didn't just drop the ball, they dunked it in sewage, played 8 rounds of soccer with it and then tossed it in the trash for good measure. This movie shits on Indiana Jones's character and legacy every chance it gets to prop up a selfish, arrogant, bitch who is ironically more akin to Beloque then Indiana.
Short Round is having more success than Indiana Jones by this time. in real life and in the Indy universe.
Would have been really cool seeing a grown up Short Round. Especially since his actor is now a star in his own right.

According to James Mangold, he was given a script after Spielberg declined to direct a month before pre-production was scheduled to start, but that script had, "no reason to be made." During a meeting with Lucas, Kennedy, and Speilberg, he pitched a movie about aging, sorrounding a time mcguffin and was given a year to write it, so this movie was almost much worse.
Another Fun Fact: The artifact Indy is seeking in the opening flashback is the Lance of Longinus, the blade that drew Christ's blood. This artifact was previously featured in a 1995 comic book, "Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny," in which the Nazis are after the blade and Indy and his father must stop them.

Fun Fact: Anthony Ingruber, a voice actor and Harrison Ford lookalike, makes a cameo as a Dutch prince at an auction in Morocco. Ingruber also played a young version of Ford's character in The Age of Adaline (2015). Sean Connery also makes a cameo, with photos of Henry Jones Sr. appearing in Indiana Jones' New York apartment.

I searched up, he's also the body double for young Indi scenes. Big fan of his rendition of Joker in the Batman Telltale game.
The biggest sin this movie commits is that Indy takes a back seat in his own movie. They had this formula down from Last Crusade, only this time Indy would be the wise mentor like his father was, and Helena would have essentially taken over Indy's role from Crusade. But in the end, Helena knows everything that Indy knows, is just as capable if not more, and basically makes his role in all of this moot. I felt Mads was wasted as a villain too.
I mean… does she? Indy’s still the main lead and the central focus of the film.

Whole movie woulda been better without her. Slightly better. It was just bad overall... except for the beginning which surprisingly hit the vibe pretty well.
I think not having Short Round and Salah with him on the adventure was a huge mistake!

Another Fun Fact: John Rhys-Davies had expressed interest in reprising his role as Sallah from Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He was offered a cameo in the wedding scene in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but he "thought the character of Sallah is worth more to the audience than that."
Yeah, apparently he's worth a two minute cameo in a shittier movie, saying one trailer line and fucking off to never bee seen again.
Honestly speaking I think it's more likely he was given a low-ball offer to do a cameo and he said nah I'm good thank you but with Disney they probably gave him a dumpster full of money and also probably literally begged him to be in this movie since they knew it was gonna suck and they needed all the nostalgia bait they could get

They should’ve had Short Round grown up with Indy on one last adventure. Imagine if they actually did that, and then Ke Huy Quan wins his Oscar. People would’ve gone NUTS for Dial of Destiny knowing Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan was returning in it as Short Round! Disney Screwed the pooch on that one

Antonio Banderas’ character is literally the only character I remembered from the movie aside from Indiana Jones.

I wish they did more with him too. I like Banderas as an actor and he should be a great addition to an Indy movie, but they underused him. I also felt the same for Mads Mikkelsen too.

To address that ending, the film actually was going to end with Indy staying behind, but it involved Helena taking up the mantle and retroactively replacing him in the previous four movies. This got so much backlash from test audiences that it was reworked into the ending we ultimately got.

The bad guys in temple of doom are African American so I think some are offended by it but a lot of other films have white bad guys so tbh it's not a big deal
TOD is good but not great and certainly not a classic people only say it's a classic because they were children when it came out and thought because of the darker tone and occasionally gruesome stuff that they were bing naughty and getting away with watching something they probably shouldn't have

I know I’m gonna get hated by saying this but…I actually liked Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. I think it’s watchable at times, has interesting points here and there and it had a great ending to Indies story.

killing off Jones son off-screen was a big mistake, I don't care how Shia Labouf turned out there were far better options then to go down that road.

It’s weird to see people still clinging to the idea that Temple of Doom was a failure. It’s like did you not get the memo that we’re way past that. It’s easily my favorite at this point. Also the chase sequence through the college town in Crystal Skull has more cinematic value than anything in the new film. Without Spielberg the franchise feels lifeless.
I’ve noticed Return of the Jedi also gets some of this treatment. I don’t get it. I’m happy to concede both are the 3rd best of their trilogies but they are still really good.
Its not really that its a failure but more of being thier least favorite of the series(In this case in the original trilogy), personally while I do like the film I didn't enjoy it as much as Raiders or Last Crusade but is better than Crystal Skull which I found mostly just ok and most definitely Dail of Destiny, but if its your favorite that is great.
Completely agree about Temple of Doom, it stands just as tall as the others in the trilogy to me. And yeah, watching just how safe, bland and boring this movie is made me realize that I was too harsh on Crystal Skull the first time I watched it. Like I watched it again and honestly the action is really up to snuff, and most importantly feels unique. Nearly every action scene here feels like it's generic as hell and trying to emulate something standard that they'd think would go in a random Indy film. It just feels so boring. Tons of people have complained endlessly about the Crystal Skull monkeys and like the ants, but holy hell I completely prefer that to anything here.

I'll come out and say it: Crystal Skull is better. It had an older indy like in this film, but actually gave him closure, which this movie undoes just because Disney has a hard-on for broken old men. It had a stronger villain with a better death scene. The nuke scene, for how nonsensical as it was, is memorable, unlike anything in this movie. Aliens are more believable than time travel in this franchise. And Shia Labeouf was a better companion than Phoebe Waller-Bridge, since Mutt was Indy's direct child, instead of the daughter of some random character we barely get to know.
I really don't think there should have been an Indy 5, but if they did, it should have been an adventure with Indy, Mutt, and an adult Short Round. The latter two would clash over their different personalities, but ultimately grow closer, and Indy would tell them he's proud of his two sons. The movie could end with Indy dying, and his stuff ending up in a beautiful museum exhibit, while Mutt and Short Round would both pick up the mantle.
I would prefer to leave Mutt out of it. Short Round would make a much better successor.
Let’s not forget wasting Karen Allen as Marion in a cameo. She’s an underrated actress.

I really hate it when some people like NC keep on hating some movies, TV shows and/or games that weren't even all that bad to begin with.
They're just letting their own fear, anger, hatred, and suffering consumed them completely till they ended up hating thenselves for overhating these movies, TV shows, and games for way too long (that it just feels unneeded and undeserving nowadays), destroying themselves on the inside, killing their own joy and happiness entirely, and ended up feeling nothing more but complete regret, and guilt.

It made sense, but only back in the day. The ending of Crystal Skull hints to this happening. But they realized how everyone hated the movie and the character Mutt, and they scrapped the plans they definitely had to continue the franchise with him.

This movie had another easy fix: Let director James Mangold go all LOGAN with it; Indy is older and bitter so he should channel the energy of the "shooting the swordsman" scene in the first one and be more willing to just shoot bad guys left and right (in addition to other creatively brutal kill options)
Not even earning the eyepatch, or giving the end of the credits a triumphant Raiders March reprise. I can forgive leaving out the Paramount match cut, to a degree.
Crystal Skull tried to end the franchise with a bang. This one went out with a whimper.

Weirdly enough, the movie completely lost me when they traveled back in time. My main reason for this has to do with the Dial itself.
The other artifacts in the other movies were all something supernatural and otherworldly: the Ark of the Covenant holds the power of God, the Sankara Stones are mystical artifacts somehow related to Shiva, and the Holy Grail is the cup that Jesus Christ drank from at the Last Supper and also caught Christ’s blood during the Crucifixion. The Crystal Skull, while not an artifact related to religion or anything mystical like the previous artifacts still came from a source far beyond and far more powerful than humanity.
The Dial of Destiny doesn’t have any of these things. It’s literally a device built by a man who was good at engineering and math. There is nothing supernatural hinted at (at least nothing I picked up on while watching the movie). There is nothing mysterious about it at all and I cannot suspend my disbelief long enough to get on board with it.
Except for the supernatural elements (and jumping out of a plane with an inflatable raft, although MythBusters had something to say about that), the movies were all grounded in reality. All of the characters were regular people in over their heads with power they did not comprehend. And this is part of what allowed Indiana Jones to escape every time: he knew he was in over his head. When he realized what was happening with the Ark, he closed his eyes to avoid the wrath of God; when he realized the connection of the Sankara Stones to Shiva, he used that to defeat Mola Ram; and when he realized that the Holy Grail would be the cup of a lowly carpenter rather than a powerful king, he was able to save his father.
The Nazis lose in this one because they were bad at geology. Other than that, both they and Indy knew exactly how the Dial worked because it’s just math. Not really a mysterious and powerful artifact when you look at it that way.
So yeah, Archimedes invented time travel by doing math and the Nazis were bad at geology. Maybe other people see it differently, but I just couldn’t get behind it.
Dial of Destiny should have gone something like this
Indiana became like his father ignored his family and preferred ancient dead people over his family. Mutt is not dead he's still enlisted after the war he opened up his shop reparing bikes something he liked doing (as established in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) got married started a family. Indiana tried to call him but couldn't too ashamed of himself repeating same mistake his father did. Indiana wants to go back in time to get all those years he wasted of not being there for his son, his wife Marion, and not meeting Matt's son. Jurgen is revealed to be brother of Belloq who wants to finish what brother failed to do look for the Dial of Destiny and use to change time the way he sees fit. Helena is not Indiana Jones goddaugther she's actually his daughter her full name is Helena Sophie Jones and her mother is Willie Scott. Before you say Indiana never had a daughter and I'm making it up nope it was established in the Young Indiana Jones series he has daughter named Sophie and she has two kids also Old Indy mentions he has multiple children. Sophie mother is never mentioned and Mutt was a thing yet till Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Helena is similar to her father going on adventures but she actually takes her kids with her on her adventures and spends time with them. Jurgen is revealed to have killed Oxley after he refused to help him find the Dial of Destiny and his death drove wedge between Indiana and Marion with Indiana being accused of not caring for him which is not the case and Marion wanted to avenge Oxley for being there for her and Mutt. Everything in film remains the same but only difference It's not just Indiana and Helena they are joined by Marion, Spike, Lucy, Sallah, and Short Round for one last adventure. Jurgen dies same way like his brother and Donovan the Dial of Destiny taking away his years leaving his glasses and watch melted. Indiana wants to use the Dial of Destiny to go back get all those lost years he wasted not being there for Marion and Mutt but is told by Marion he can't change the past no matter how many times he tries but before he use it the Dial of Destiny destroys itself unable to remain intact. Film ends with Indiana with Marion going to visit their son Mutt before they knock at the door he turns to Marion says "Sweetheart you were right I can't go back no matter how times I can try I can't change the past. If there is one very important thing i learned you have to live life moving forwards not back this time" then Marion gives Indiana a gentle punch in the face. Instead of Mutt answering the door its little boy named Henry Oxley Jones the fourth after Indiana introduces himself and makes amends with his son. Sallah, Short Round, Helena with her children Spike and Lucy, and Stanforth arrive all invited for cook out and just in time to watch NASA launch Armstrong to the moon being covered on the news by none other than Willie Scott which of course Short Round mentions her history with Indiana and Marion gives him that look of really any more surprises. Indiana puts his hat on his grandson passing of the torch finally and Indiana retires. Idk something like this would have been much better
Congratulations, you just wrote a story that is INFINITELY better than what we actually got. Indy becoming a little too much like his father is a great reason for him to have real relationship issues with his wife and son. As long as Helena was recast, her being Indy and Willie Scott's daughter with kids of her own is perfect! Mutt lives, Sallah and Short Round get important parts in the story, Jurgen is much more of a threat who murders someone close to both Indy and Marion, and we get a story where Indy has a genuine motivation to travel back in time without it being necessary for the plot to kill off Mutt, completely destroy his happiness and leave him a broken old man who just wants to die in the past.

I didn't like Mutt in Crystal Skull, but at least that movie gave Indy a happy ending. The trilogy already had an ending, Crystal Skull wasn't needed, but if they were going to do it, at least they did one thing right: the happy ending. This movie destroys that.

It's really sad to see how Steven Spielberg ended his relationship with Shia LaBeouf. I always thought that if they had continued working together, Shia could have helped Steven snag six more Oscars, just like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro did. I mean, getting fired for giving some honest feedback about Indiana Jones seems totally unfair. The main thing holding Steven back from more success is his struggle to take advice from those around him. Recently, he lost 7 Oscars to Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is tough. Honestly, I'm relieved that I won't have to rely on my Bachelor's Degree in Film to pursue a career as a movie director.
You could just tell how much Harrison Ford didn't want to do to this one, from crashing his plane in real life to the near death experiences Indy has in the movie. I watched this movie at home, and added my own dialogue for Indy every time he was nearly *dispatched* by something. When the car hits the breaks at the airport, I shouted "WHY DID YOU STOP!?!?"
The Malcolm Short Round joke was comedy gold🤣
