The camera is attached to the walls. They're on wheels and the crew are moving the whole room around. They attach the furniture to the walls so it moves with the walls then de-attach it to make it look like it's moving. Check out the making-of video. Very clever!

i said it then. i'll say it now. this is thee song of 1996. i got heavy into old school music at this point having given up on modern music and when this song came out, i was like "hold up." i didn't see this song coming at all.

The floor is stationery. The rest of the set is on wheels. So, it gives the effect that the floor is like a Conveyor Belt. With the addition of the fans in the one scene with the rest of the band, it fools your eyes to think the floor is moving when actually everything else is moving and the floor isn't. Genius Idea. They actually hinted at it in the video. If you notice, the walls don't go all the way down to the floor. There is a gap. That is why the Waterbug was seen crawling through the gap.

I've always been partial to the video for space cowboy... even tho the album version isn't my favourite song.... but it's still hawt.
seems like a lot of people are reacting to this this week. here's what I told someone else re the video.... the parts where it looks like he's sliding... he's actually standing still or dancing, but the room is in fact what's moving. sorta like how they did the scene in the movie inception where they walk on the walls. the camera is afixed so you don't sense the room moving.... or the walls rather. also, I think he explained in some parts one couch is also afixed to the wall while the other is sittimg still in middle of the floor, or moving when it's shoved by the wall. watch it again and all this should make sense. cheers.
It's crazy how when you know how the sliding floor effect is done, you will now always see the room moving and the floor stationery, even if you try not to. Back when this song was released, everyone's WTF reaction to the video was just like Just Jammin's. 😂
@@helicoptersrkool ya. this came at a time when the internet was just starting to blow up, so it wasn't quite as easy to get the secrets out... but I think if i remember correctly jay kay explained video either on the show top gear (which he ruled the "lap in a reasonably priced car") or maybe it was graham norton's talk show. I forget. but this technic is pretty common in movie special effects too so someone would've exposed the videos secret of it wasn't jay kay himself. 🙃
This video was waaaay ahead of it's time - you were correct. It changed everything and it was done pretty much on a budget which is what's so incredible, because Jamiroquai was signed to an independent U.K. label called "Talkin' Loud". Also - he had no idea what the director had planned and is just improvising all the way through! Our boy's a genius.
The budget was £150k in 1996, hardly a small amount! Equivalent to £320k today.
The director originally wanted the floor to move, but it was done by moving the entire set to save money.
The dance routine took 1 day to choreograph, then 1 day to shoot.

Back before CGI was the preliminary for music videos everything was a physical set. The entire set here is basically made of a lightweight foam which makes it easy to roll around from the outside. Its a brilliant way to give the illusion that things and Mr. Jay Kay are moving in ways they shoudln't lol.
Ok, I could say this…. I remember the first time I heard this song, I saw the video as well and my mind was blown away with both (especially the video). Then I could not remember the name of the song or the artist for years, it was a late night video show. Although they both stayed on my mind. Now I know! Thanks for bringing it back.

I remember being soooo excited about this album and playing it for my pianist (who is the head of Duke Ellington Orchestra) - and he looks at me and says -“uh huh- Stevie Wonder reborn..” lol. He was making the point that everything comes from something while having fun deflating my enthusiasm a little. Nothing at all wrong w borrowing a little from a good source. 😊 Great reaction as always! Love this album.

My DUDE! My DUDE! This is like the DOPEST video I can ever think of in history. The only match is MAYBE the MJ Thriller video. Pharrell recently tried to break some kind of video record awhile ago with his "Happy" video but that can't even compare. Maybe some other commenter can mention a music video as great as this or one greater. Other than "Thriller" I can't think of one and I've seen HUNDREDS of music videos some of them really great and creative. I think there are a few accelerated time lapse videos that are visually interesting and creative but nothing on this level IMO.
This video was a HUGE hit when the track came out and the TRACK was a hit at the time as well. Probably his biggest selling single but don't quote me on that. He has made plenty great tracks during his career. British dude heavy into funk/soul/new disco.
