      Good video. I have a question. Is 9900KF cooler than 9900K. It doesn't have igpu, so it should have better thermals, right? Because 9900KF goes on sale for 420$ regullary. That's the same price as 3800x.

      @@Saigonas 9900KF is the same as the 9900K with power use and heat output, the IGPU part if the chip is there just deactivated. They both use solder not thermal paste.
      most CPU's are binned up to a point (same with AMD and Intel) , the best ones are sold as 9900K then the less good ones are sold as cheaper CPU's with deactivated parts.
      with AMD best chips go in the 3800x second best in 3700x 3rd best in 3600x and so on.

      The performance wall AMD crashes into (even with great world-class cooling) has me skeptical about the _Higher_ performance potential going forward. Maybe we can do more stuff, but I think we will need other tricks to hopefully bypass the CPU to get higher performance

I'm not gaming, I have to say, though.

    • @blkspade23
      @blkspade23 5 лет назад +6

      @@czdaniel1What your're talking about is a clock wall, not performance and it is partially due to a firmware bug. They have been moving up clocks, cores, and IPC every generation. The thing is, moving forward, there will absolutely be more games using DX12 or Vulkan and coding for more core utilization. AMD's SMT implementation is also better than Intel's hyperthreading. Zen 2 has higher IPC than 9th Gen Intel, making it faster at the same clocks, thus requiring an Intel CPU that hits 5.0Ghz+. Ryzen at 4.6 is equivalent to Intel at 5.0. The only Intel product that make sense from a forward thinking point of view is the 9900K(S). If you have $500 to spend on a CPU, the 3900X will have better longevity for multiple tasks. With any less money, not only are the other Ryzen chips better choices for the money, the platform isn't dead yet like Intel's. There isn't going to be anything better than the 9900K(S) on current Intel boards. AMD's AM4 still has at least one more generation in it.

    • @shadow-cz3vr
      @shadow-cz3vr 5 лет назад +1

      @@blkspade23 It is not only a clock wall. AMD chips struggle with latency performance by nature of its architecture. The infinity fabric is just not efficient, especially when information has to be transferred between CCX modules. Sure, it might help to an extent to just have faster memory, but past 4000 mhz the frequency ratio gets reduced to 1:2, meaning it's practically 2000 mhz. And even right now anything above 3200 makes a negligible difference. AMD has tried to remedy the issue with CCX latencies by implementing ridiculously large L3 cache sizes. This is so that information can be temporarily stored in L3 cache without having to travel out of the CCX module. This improves performance significantly in a select few old games, but has little impact on performance in newer ones. The clockspeed wall is not a firmware bug; the chips are literally unstable past a certain frequency. In other words the problem is definitely not in the software, it's in the CPU itself. As of right now Ryzen can hold something like 4.5 ghz on a single core temporarily, however they can only do 4.3 ghz on all cores. "AMD's SMT implementation is also better than Intel's hyperthreading" this is definitely not true, at least not for games. In productivity I've seen AMD beat out Intel in the multithreaded area of things with all other things equal. For gaming however, SMT can sometimes negatively impact frame rate. From the benchmarks I've seen some games benefit from it noticeably while others lose quite a bit of performance. Hyperthreading is much more consistent; the 9900k is gonna beat the 9700k pretty much every time. It's interesting that you brought up the fact that Zen 2 has higher IPC. Despite this fact, if you put an 8700k against a 3600 both locked at 4.3ghz the 8700k will win every time in games, sometimes by 10% or more. Like I explained earlier, AMD is hitting not just a clockspeed wall. I disagree that the 9900k is the only Intel CPU that's futureproof. In fact I'd argue that the 9700k is just as futureproof as a 3700x as far as gaming goes. Keep in mind that even the 9700k only gets 50-60% core utilization in most games, which is far from maxing out or bottlenecking. It is also the faster gaming CPU, meaning it literally has more CPU overhead and will thus better handle tomorrow's (presumably faster) graphics cards. AMD's AM4 socket is going out of support in 2020, so the only more powerful chip being added to the line up is probably the 3950x.

      Cyberpunk crushed the GTX1080ti on early play throughs before optimization. I definitely would go 8 cores or better and 2070 super or Navi variants for the gpu or better. Basically for a no limit soldier you need about 1800 dollars. I also think Vram will potentially be a concern. 8 gigs is the gold standard now, but I think we will be clipping that a lot more in the next two years. The next gen consoles will have at least 12 gigs of ram, 8 cores for the cpu and over 10 tflops for new Navi. We are about to see a huge jump in fidelity in less than three years.

Just built my new Ryzen 3800X system to replace my I7490k at 4.4 ghz with a 1070ti. Still plays everything well after 6 years, but was starting to show it's age. I went with the 3800X because of the higher single core boost out of the box, with no fiddling about. I agree, this was a great test with accurate and informative results, but as most of us know, Ryzen is known to peak performance with faster RAM frequencies. 3600mhz, or even 3400mhz would yield better performance because of the Infinity Fabric. Please give us some comparative benchmarks results with Ryzen paired up with DRAM 3600mhz! And maybe give the Ryzen processors the same Noctua cooler you gave the 9900k.

      I don't know, in testing environment then you go with whatever make out the most fps hence highest bus ram possible. But for 3200mhz bus ram, Intel can achieve this much, and if you want higher fps for AMD you will have to buy more expensive ram which increase the cost of AMD total system.
      The fact is that Intel CPU is strong on its own and AMD needs ram make it hard to decide. Like you add 150$ to buy a stronger CPU (i9 9900k vs r9 3900x) to get more fps, now you buy amd cpu u save about 150$, then you have to spend that 150$ to buy a faster ram to get the most out of it.
      So in the end, it will cost u the same money. (i9 900k + 3200mhz = r9 3900x + 3600mhz) however the Intel still win in the fps at the end of the day. Assume that the other parts are the same price (mainboard, cooler, psu, ect). Therefore I see no need to buy a highest bus ram for amd. Although it can gives out more fps, however if your true purpose is more fps then just go for intel.
      Yes, i would like to hear Techdeal opinion on this matter. Sometimes he left out this kind of stuff.

    • @kingdudethe2nd
      @kingdudethe2nd 5 лет назад

      Hung4444 you dont need more than 3200mhz for near optimal performance. ram can usually be overclocked, sometimes to 3400 or even to 3600mhz on 3200-certified ram, and the infinity fabric itself can be fine tuned manually. the comparison here i guess is that intel has 1 main overclocking feature, while amd requires 3 different overclocks/tunes to hit max performance

If you are a casual gamer and focus on productivity however I'd go with higher cores / thread count instead. Sent back and refunded my 3700X, snagged me a 3900X, did my vendor dirty, but its a 3900X, you know. Well point is, there is no stock here except for those 50-100 CPUs that sold out fast.

    MMORPGs need some love. Final Fantasy 14 Shadowbringers (5.0) has a roughly six-minute standalone benchmark that should give some idea of how the game will run, though of course zones, player population, etc. have a tremendous impact. Square Enix has had this free benchmark available since version 2.0, but none of the gaming tech channels ever use it. Please give it a try.

    Nice video. \Since you are putting a good cooler on the i9 to get the clockspeed up, why not do something analogous like tuning the ryzen's memory and getting the fabric clock up and latency down? I have mine at 3733 cl 16

    No doubt about it. If I had large sums to throw at a computer it would be a 2080ti and i9 9900k combo. Hands down. But being that I only wanted reasonably fast and play anything for reasonable money, I went Ryzen 5 3600 + Radeon 5700 FTW! So far so good.

  • @LargeOwngasm

    Just recently upgraded from a i7 3820 to a R7 3700x based on your recommendations and all i can say is WOW. My entire system feels twice as fast in everything I do and gave my Vega 56 much more room to stretch it's legs in CPU intensive games like Squad. 4 core 8 threads to 8 core 16 threads is quite the performance jump. Good on the old i7 3820 though for lasting that long.
    Suggestion for testing a new game though. Insurgency Sandstorm or Squad. Squad servers can have up to 80 players and before my i7 would tank HARD once the player count got above 40 in a server, now this 3700x keeps a minimum of over 60fps no matter what.

    Excellent video, but what I'd really like to see is this same comparison with faster RAM and XMP enabled on the motherboard to allow the full RAM speed. (basically overclocking, but not really.) Anyone getting a Ryzen 3000 series for gaming will know the infinity fabric speed is tied to the RAM speed which will affect benchmarks DDR 3600 seems to be the sweet spot. I'm sure the i9 would still win, but I do wonder how much of the difference would evaporate as the i9 can't really clock higher, but the Ryzens can.

    I grabbed a 3900X Over a 9900k because back when I got my 6600k i was told 4c/4t was all i needed. Just a few years later and the ryzen 5 1600 does way better in several games. I couldn't take the microstuttering so I wanted all the cores I could get. Here's to hoping it'll last me 5 years comfortably.

    Good video. As a pc gamer I'm still sitting here scratching my head wishing we could make more advances in clock speed (CPU). Then again, tbh, the real problem is the lack of progress on the GPU side of things.

    For strictly gaming, I don't think you can forget about the i7 9700k. With a good motherboard you can overclock to 5.0ghz on all 8 cores and get similar i9 9900k performance. However, if more games start utilizing hyperthreading it may not be super future proof. If you're just gaming and not streaming or video editing and only looking to keep your cpu for about 3 years, it's the best option IMHO.

    Very good video, with all the different chips nicely summed up.
    The Intel 9900k is the fastest, at 1080p and 1440p but is it faster at 4k, when the gpu becomes more of a bottleneck?
    I'm running a Ryzen 5 3600 with a 2080ti on a 4k monitor and I honestly think that the I9 would be no better at this resolution :)

    The good thing about AMD is their platform longevity. I'm using 3600 and planned to use it for 3-4 years after that depending on how massive DDR5 improvement I maybe could still buy 8c or 12c Ryzen 3000/4000 for cheap and use it for another 2 years.
