Veneer felt like a potato chip... Vintage Buffet Makeover

  • A Jacobean style buffet left in the rain doesn't look the same! This sideboard/buffet was given to me by Corey at Mission Side Hustle. The unfortunate tropical storm trashed this beauty, but we will make it whole again in this video. Truly a trash to treasure refinish in this video. Originally manufactured by the Grand Rapids Chair Company, the solid build of this buffet helped to keep it in one piece during extreme conditions.
Check out the origin story on the Mission Side Hustle RUclips channel: • HOW MANY couches did I...

    Original Poem:
    The thing about life is
Things don't always pan out the way you expect
Sometimes you wrap a buffet in a tarp
And you hope it doesn't get wet.
But when a tropical storm blows through
It's hard for veneer to stay true
Even if the build was excellent
Glue can fail and wood can become spent
    Nature will reclaim everything
    That is what they say
    But this buffet
Will not be taken to the dump today.

Well Miss Emily a quick story. I just redone a Victorian two flight stair case. Wife changed her mind on the wall colors. Put down drop cloths on my buttery smooth hand planed, hand made, scribed to fit stair treads and railings. Now picture this. A 6 foot 250 pound man bounces up the two case to the 5 gallon of unmixed pearl white paint on the top step. 2nd step from the top my foot placement takes all the slack out of the drop cloth. This snatches the pail of paint off the step. Instead of it spilling naturally I grasp for it only to give it more momentum to TUMBLE down the stairs sloshing paint over the whole world. Along behind it I followed suit due to slipping in paint trying to catch the pail. So now the 6 foot 250 pound man turns into a paint snowplow. Coating again and getting the missed places with another wave of paint. So the next time you knock over paint or stain remember it can get worse.

I wish you could see my reaction as I read this. I think your best descriptor was 'The 6ft 250lb man turns into a paint snow plow.' This is hilarious and terrifying at the same time. I have seen these stairs cases. They are no joke pieces of art. I probably would have cried as I started cleaning everything up. I pinned this comment. It is definately a scenario I hope I never see in real time. Thank you for sharing this!!! How is the stair case doing now?

@@ReconstructingEmily I enlisted every person within driving distance to help get up the wet paint. There was a ShopVac harmed in our rescue. I only had to scrape down and refinish three 2nd story steps. The middle landing however had to be pulled up and refinished completely. It’s all good now. Thank you for sharing your work.

Thank you for showing that these pieces are worth salvaging! We bought several 1940 Kittinger pieces made of solid mahogany for much less than the cost of new, cheaply made furniture that would only last a couple of years.
Plus, you are keeping things from ending up in a landfill when they will bring so much joy and pleasure to someone for years to come. ❤

This is so sad. I have my grandmothers full dinning set. A buffet that they bought in Minnesota when they came over to America from Austria. I'm guessing sometime near the turn of the last Century. The wood is a little dry and needs a bit of love, but for their age, they are prestien. Six chairs and 2 captain chairs, the table with 3 leaves, (They had 12 children) the buffett and an unattached long mirror that appears that it was made to go with this set yet I have nor found any others nor have professionals heard of any mirrors that came with this set. By the way it is an exact match to the buffet you have there.
