Can This TRASHED Epiphone SG Modern Be Saved?

  • I got this used Epiphone SG Modern for a bargain price online but, as it turns out, you get what you pay for! This electric guitar turned out to be absolutely trashed but it had so much potential that I couldn't leave it in ruins.
    In this video, I take you with me as I repair and modify this Epiphone SG Modern and give it a new lease of life! This build got progressively more complicated as it went on and I found more and more things wrong with the guitar but, eventually, I think I managed to save it!
    I take you through the process of fixing this guitar as I sand, spray, and assemble what is now one of my favourite guitars in my collection. It was also an awesome opportunity to learn more about guitar repair. More projects coming soon!
    Thank you for taking the time out of your day to watch this video. I appreciate you. Take care, stay safe. I'll see you later ✌️

    Epiphone is where my heart is. It was my first guitar of my own. It was a cheap b stock explorer back in like 95 or 96, but I LOVED it. I recently just purchased an Epi SG traditional pro. Im blown away by how solid of a guitar she is. Love how yours turned out. Those zebra humbuckers take it to another level man, and the kinda stinger oh dude..

    Yeah, what you saw in that control cavity was actually factory stock. All the push/pull pots and coilsplit options with phase switching also, really crowds the small area. I had one when they first came out, and really liked the neck profile.

      @@JackTaylorGuitars yeah, Epi electronics and wiring, for as much as I love their current build quality, is mostly done solderless these days with those odd pots. It’s part of why so many Epis these days have coil splits and phase switching even on like $400/$500 models.
      This all started when Gibson switched to PC boards on their guitars sometime in the early 2010s. It was great, in theory.
      Of course, good luck finding Gibson quick connect pickups when you want a specific one and good luck figuring out how to solder another brand of pickups into the Gibson connectors and if one of the pots on the board goes, iirc, the whole board goes. Good luck finding a functioning, used Gibson PC board for a reasonable price, too.
      The Epi pots may or may not be proprietary, idk, but at least the connectors used on them are not, and can be ordered online & soldered to any brand of pickup.
      Maybe useless info, maybe not.

    So with metallic finishes you don’t sand back it needs to be rough and then you lightly spray clear coats to lock the metallic flakes in place. Spraying to heavy makes the flakes lay down giving it that grayish color. Great job though!!

    Is it possible that the "grayish" color that kept returning was from the original finish not being entirely removed and then showing through? I've seen other people use a heat gun in order to remove the original coating before sanding. I'm not a painter or guitar luthier, so I could be completely wrong. Just figured I'd throw the question out there and see what others thought.

    • @JackTaylorGuitars

      It’s a great shout mate, genuinely good question. In this case I’m positive it wasn’t that this time because it was after about 2 cans of paint. • @tonya4157
      @tonya4157 Год назад

      No, it's a metallic paint so when you sand it you expose the metallic particles. Metallics can be tricky. May have taken a couple tries but looks like you got the hang of it. It looks good.

Maybe in another week or so, I'll apply the clear coat. I think I'll leave that for a few weeks before sanding and buffing orange peel etc The clear coat I use is pretty expensive, It's that 2K Clear apparently It's the best from a spray can.
