  • Ok giving this stuff a go! Ive been keeping an eye out on this stuff since last year but decided to jump the gun, buy it and see whats up with this stuff. I have sprayed feather fill g2 and slick sand in the past. This stuff says it can go over bare metal which is the big reason why I wanted to try it.

    Very helpful video Gary, thanks. I've been reading as much about this product as I can and your video more or less kicked me over the edge to try it.
    Question - does this require sealing before top coating, or can you apply the base color coat right over it? I didn't see any mention of it in the TDS.

    I bet they wanted the 80 grit scratch in the steel because it's an epoxy/polyester hybrid. I'll be interested to see how well it covered those 50 and 36 grit scratches. Clausen Rust Defender poly primer claims either 2 or three coats with a 2.5 tip will cover a nickel so I suppose anything is possible :)

      Thats what I figured as well but I can tell ya it buried those 36 grit scratches in the first coat, very much reminds me of slick sand in its build and spray more like feather fill. That clausen is next on my to try list lol

    So after you have sprayed the Featherfill G2 and this Super Build, which one do you prefer over the other, and why? Have you used Slicksand? I need to chose one for a 57 Thunderbird. I want one that sands easy.

    • @GaryRubino
      @GaryRubino  7 лет назад

      Kind of hard to say, feather fill sands the best and comes in a few colors but doesnt fill as good as the superbuild. Ive only used a quart of slick sand so I cant really gauge at how much I like it compared to the other two. How ever, superbuild as far as specs wise has my vote so far since you dont need a sealer under it. I have sprayed FF over metal and filler with out a sealer but that was dumb of me to do from my readings and findings after the fact. While they all sort of suck to sand, Id go with superbuild.

    hi Gary... i am thinking of trying this product also. can i ask what pressure you ran your gun at?

    • @GaryRubino
      @GaryRubino  2 года назад

      Sorry for the late reply, I usually set my gun at about 40psi at the compressor and just run the hose right into my gun with no regulator on a 50 foot hose with a filter at the compressor

    Hey Gary, like the video, how is the project holding up? I know Super Build and Finish Sand can spray over bare metal and pass all the salt tests? I read alot about putting epoxy down first to help with corrosion protection but this eliminates a step so was just curious. I want to use hok kd and evercoat 4:1 products!

    • @GaryRubino
      @GaryRubino  6 лет назад

      Hi Chuck, far as I know the car is still running around with no issues. The owner did contact me last year but he never got back to me. If I get a chance Ill use this stuff again on my personal project and we'll get a chance to see how it'll hold up but from evercoat, Im confident in the product. This does eliminate the step of spraying epoxy down first since the tech sheet says its epoxy enriched. HOK and everycoat, cant go wrong there!

    I bought it to use . They don't tell you, that you need to use it with a set time. The can set for awhile and went bad before I got to use it gallon to jell a waste of a 100 dollar.

    But how much metal did you take off sanding it the half life of the paint job is less than metal

      Not sure, not really a way I have to gauge it. I didnt go crazy but I did make sure to give it some tooth.

    That is pretty wild stuff I've always wanted to try it but I've always stuck with the epoxy and the feather fill because I'm scared haha thanks for making the video!

    • @GaryRubino
      @GaryRubino  7 лет назад +1

      I would highly suggest you give it a go! Its quite a bit thicker than feather fill, sprays in between slick sand and feather fill and you dont have to use epoxy first. It speeds things up! Ill be using it on my next car I do for sure. Dont be scared, just let it happen hahah Thanks for watching man :)

    hope it works out I actually bought a gallon myself and was gonna use it last weekend but the activator bottles lid was loose and it spilled in the box so I'm waiting on another bottle. thanks for the video can't wait to see how it sands

      So far I dig it, it sanded a little hard but I started with 80 grit to cut it then 180 and it went very well! Ill be uploading the second part of this on Wednesday :) Im gathering up some after pics of the car now that Ive got it all painted. Hope it works out for you just as well as it did for me!

    Hi Gary, I just Sub'd your channel. Did you ever try the Clausen "Rust Defender" or their "All-U-Need" poly primers? They are very good products. Tom

    Looks like it sprayed out really well

    • @GaryRubino
      @GaryRubino  8 лет назад

      It surprised me for sure, on the tech sheet its a little thicker in mill thickness than slick sand but sprayed really easy. You could probably even bump back to a 1.8 and get just as good results. Next video on this should be up Wednesday :)

    Curious what your booth temp was?

    • @GaryRubino
      @GaryRubino  Год назад +1

      Didn’t have a booth back then, probably temp outside was around 90ish degrees.

    • @bobbarber1668
      @bobbarber1668 Год назад

      @@GaryRubino Thanks for the info. Great video by the way. I used to use a product called Refacer. It was a direct to metal product and it had a mechanical and chemical etch. You could build it 40+ mils over 4-5 coats. Sanded like chalk but hardened like concrete. I got the flattest smoothest paint work from that product. This is my first time using this product. I found that by running my booth temp up 10 degrees or so and using a slower reducer allowed things to flow out a dot better with less peel. Not that you care about that because you're going to sand it away anyway. Just me being picky.

      Oh okay thanks what type of air compressor would you recommend for diy person in the garage?

    • @GaryRubino
      @GaryRubino  8 лет назад

      Honestly, the biggest you can afford lol I have a 26 gallon with 2hp motor and its just barely enough for spraying a few panels at a time. So Id say anything bigger than what I have but nothing smaller as you wont have enough air volume to make the guns or any air tools for that matter work for long. Also make sure you end up getting one that comes with a warranty, I hate saying where I got my air compressor but mine is a Harbor Freight and theirs came with a 2 year warranty so I was out the door for 250 bucks if memory serves. Ive already gone through one and this is my second one within that 2 year warranty time frame, its cost me another 50 bucks for this one so all in all Ive got 300 bucks into it over the last almost 4 years. So it isnt terribly bad considering I do this on the side part time
