  • After cutting parts on the Langmuir Systems CrossFire XR, this is the easiest way I have found to remove mill scale from the many parts with the least amount of work.
If you would like to check out some of the tools that we use in our shop to remove mill scale, check them out by clicking on the "Recommended Tools" link at www.ntdracing.com/

Great info Dave. Mill scale is the bane of my existence, thanks for the tips

Do you wear gloves when you use a acetone?

I don’t always. Probably should. At 50, I am really starting to think about what I should be doing now that my 70yo self will thank me for. More respirators, gloves and eye protection.

@@ntdracing yeah that's a fair point. My appreciation of PPE has definitely increased in recent years

By the way, Harbor Freight's Baure surface conditioner tool is in my opinion the definitive tool to prep the surface. After the vinegar I rinse the parts (in the kitchen sink, I just use plenty of hot water and I have not seen any stains) and then hit them with the surface conditioner tool, not only they have that beautiful brushed finish that seems stainless, they are just ready to TIG

Thank you for the tip Dave. I used the 30% from homedepot. It worked really good.

Hey Dave, I got some of those 3M discs from your last video, they work great. Here's a couple extra tips from my shop. I bought a Vevor magnetic chuck for holding small steel parts for de-drossing, flappy work. Works great. Also, for scale removal on long tubing, I use a capped 4" PVC pipe, also works for vinegar storage. Thanks for the quick video.

I'd like a tub like that for some electroplating process I'm experimenting with, good idea

Thanks for the tip! I heard of doing this but your demonstration really proves it. I have to paint most parts and usually sand them but this will make it easier.👍

Thank you for the tip. I'm constantly fighting mill scale on some Jeep JK brackets that I make. This will be a big time saver!

I use cleaning vingegar from Home Depot. It is stronger than regular vinegar. Works great.

Hey next time you order metal, Look and see if they offer the plate in P&O (pickled and Oiled) It will be clean and shinny without mil-scale when it comes in. In my case when I ordered it in from O'neal steel , it was actually a little bit cheaper over the steel with mil-scale. When I got my Arclight Plasma table, finding out about the P&O plate and tube made my life so much better. Made consumables last longer, Cleaner cuts and less clean up.
Also muriatic acid takes mil scale off really fast, in a matter of minutes. You can find it at home depot. But the best way is just buy metal with out it.

Its more toxic and you have to be a little more careful when using it but I use straight muriatic acid to strip parts in the same manner. I can have parts ready in 20-30 minutes depending on how bad the milscale is. Waiting basically a whole day to have parts stripped is not even remotely in question to me haha. A quick acid dip, they come out and get dipped in fresh water to get the remaining acid off them, dry them off and then DA sand them down and they look perfect in a fraction of the time. If im not using them immediately ill wipe a thin coat of WD on them and they will stay that way for weeks

I am going to check that out. That would be especially useful for the smaller parts that I cut and need right away. Thanks.

check into just buying P&O metal from your supplier, usually its cheaper and it doesn't have mil scale. If your cutting with a cnc plasma table, the cuts are so much nicer as well!

So Dave have you ever tried the 30% or the 45% white Vinegar instead of the current one you're using which is about only 5 or 6%..
