This video shows how to replace the license plate bulbs on a 2002-2006 Toyota Camry. Most cars are similar; really the major difference is getting the felt covering on the trunk lid off.
This Toyota uses "Philips Screw" style clips. Hold the outer ring, then stick a Philips Screwdriver in the center, and turn slightly, counterclockwise, then remove the push-pin.
The child safety release is a press-fit. It may be helpful to remove the cover of it first, there's a slot where a flat-blade screwdriver can fit and you can take the cover off. Then, come in behind the handle and pry, the handle will pop off.
The bulb sockets are easily removed by twisting slightly, then they should pull down. To remove the bulb, just grasp it and wiggle it to work it out of the socket; the bulbs are just a press fit.
I'm replacing mine here with LED bulbs, these happen to be non-polarity bulbs, so they can work either way. To install bulbs (whether plain old incandescents, or LEDs), they simply push into the socket. If you are replacing with polarity-sensitive LEDs, you have a 50-50 shot of getting it right first try. If they don't light up, just remove, turn them around 180° and plug back in.
Then after the bulbs are replaced, the sockets are reinstalled in the trunk lid. They go in at the same angle they came out, then are twisted to point to the left and right sides of the vehicle, respectively.
Last thing to do is simply reinstall the trunk lid felt covering. Use the center hole to hold the panel in place. The push-pins simply get pushed into the hole, then press the center button to lock them in place. Reinstall the child safety release handle, and make sure it snaps on, then reinstall its cover. Jay, thank you for this video. I just turned 18 and got my first car. My license showed up in the mail 20 minutes before I got pulled over for my tag lights being out. I don't have a job, and only about 10 bucks to my name. So I got me a subway sandwich and some replacement bulbs and did the repair all by myself. Incredibly easy to follow and only took me 30 minutes thanks to you.
That's great to hear, glad this helped.
Yeah, same here
Damn 30 min?
Thank you so much for this! I don’t know much about cars and was told after an oil change that one of my bulbs was dim and needed to be replaced. They quoted me a ridiculous amount for labor. So, I headed on to RUclips and from there to Walmart for the bulbs and now both lights are shining nice and bright!
Great to hear, thanks!
Thanks a lot! The way you removed and reinstalled the child safety release handle is very very useful.
No problem!
Thanks for the help. I couldnt get that green handle off haha. I just slipped thr carpet off around it, and later took a pocketknife and cut a slit in the carpet behind the emergency release and now its easy if i have to do it again.
It's tricky for sure. Your way is a lot easier if you don't mind the slit.
@@jaykay18 haha yes one thing I love about my old Camry is since it's depreciated as far as possible Im not frightening to "customize" certain aspects 😆
@@jimmypavone3231 I love when cars reach the "beater stage". Don't have to worry about anything anymore.
This video was really fantastic. Was able to change my lights in less than 30 mins. I couldn't get the emergency handle off, so I just worked around it. Thank you!
You're welcome.
Huh! Yknow I just did my plate bulbs on saturday. I was thinking about filming it. But I couldnt think of a genius plan to cover the plate up. This works. I have some trim peices to replace too. Maybe ill just tape paper over it when i do film that.
Sounds good. I've seen people use rags, towels, blur it out in post, or just remove the plate entirely.
Thank you so much for this video, I was scared to break the safety release handle, but seeing its just a really tight fit helped me out. :)
You're lucky, I didn't have a video to go by! Glad this helped you out.
Thank you I just got my 02 Camry and I wasn't quite sure and you were a big help.
You're welcome.
Great video. On my 2003 the trunk release is in 2 pieces. There's a slot in the back where you can split it with a flat screw driver and remove the"cap". You can then work the plastic prongs that are holding the actual handle on to the sprocket.
Thanks. Yes, it's in 2 pieces. That's another way to do it.
Awesome video! Thanks for the help
No problem John!
Thank you for posting this!
You're welcome.
Hey idk how it's going to look like for me to do that but out of all the videos I have watched ( a lot) this one was the most helpful and easy to understand how to thank you and wish me luck 🤞🍀☺️ lol have a wonderful life
Thanks very much!
Looks easy enough, and turned out nice!
I think those clips may have worked easier to fix my waffle iron, as opposed to the push in ones I got.
Yeah, not a bad job at all. Rewarding when it's done.
Those clips came with the car, of course. I bought a clip set, has maybe 20 different styles. Bought it on Amazon I think, maybe fleabay. Haven't needed to use it yet but I will, one day.
Thank you so much . This video was extremely helpful
You're welcome!
Thanks so much for the helpful video!
No problem Georgina!
Great video man
Thank you!
Great video - thanks. Very informative.
You're welcome.
Great video! Thanks
No problem!
Very helpful thank you 🙏
You're welcome.
Awesome! Thanks for your help! Made it a relatively easy fix.
No problem Nick!
you prolly dont give a shit but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot the account password. I love any help you can offer me!
@Mario Princeton instablaster =)
@Alan Cameron thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Alan Cameron it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my account!
Great job
Thank you.
thx, helped me out today
Glad to hear it!
Thanks Jaykay
You're welcome.
Thanks so much 🥰🥰
Sure, no problem.
That helps out a lot
Great to hear!
2 Millennials were angry that this video was about changing dim lights. Not how to change someone else's car lights because they rammed into their car at 100mph with their BMW, drunk on Starbucks. Because Siri told them take a right, and they took a down, and think just replacing the lights will cover up the damage!
Very well done! How have these lights held up?
Millennials don't know how to change a light bulb anyway! But the story sounds good!
The lights have held up fine. Ginger doesn't get much mileage, of course, and not at night especially.
How many millennials does it take to change a lightbulb?
All of them, along with someone who will actually change it because that person knows what to do.
@@nl.515 Har har!
Thank you so much you are a ticket saver lol
You're welcome.
What size are the bulbs
Search for Philips Automotive Bulb Finder and you can punch in your year, make, and model and be sure. Most times, these are 194 type bulbs, but don't take my word for it, check to be sure.
Thanks
You're welcome.
Something to note since it confused me at first: the clips for the fabric are two parts, the screw and the outer ring it's placed in. You might need to hold the ring in place as you screw. I didn't realize this at first and was confused why I kept turning but it never came out.
Yes, they have been known to use different fasteners even within the same production run. Sometimes they have a screw head. Sometimes they don't and you have to pry them out. Others have a button in the center. I can only show what my car had.
Did you just assume the name of the thing there at the center of the trunk door? Man such offensive labeling!
Nice work, that really looks fantastic.
Thanks, yeah, it came out nice.
I wish you'd mentioned what kind of lightbulbs and model number you used.
I did, in the review video proper for those bulbs. This was recycled footage from that video. Search my channel for "194". There are 3 videos to choose from.
Hi jaykay18, can you tell me where your sweat band came from? Thank you!
This will be useful if I ever get this generation of Camry. Seems like an easy enough repair. Glad you replaced the old bulbs, but I wouldn't use cool white bulbs. Just doesn't look right to me.
That was a 3-pack set that came with the sweat band and 2 arm bands. No idea where it came from, I think my mother gave it to me years ago. That sweat band is getting pretty worn out. I have a replacement one, but it's plain.
It's not easy to find "warm white" LED bulbs for automotive. It does look a lot brighter with the cool white bulbs. Wait until the next video...
That was a joke.
Weird. I'll have to stay tubed.
@@isaac24 Well, now you know.
Okay.
That was really big in the 80s...
I cant seem to get the black clips back into the hole
As I had stated, make sure the center part is still pulled out. You may have to bend the 4 prongs together, and wiggle it to get it in. It came out, it will go back.
This is a lot easier than replacing the bulbs in my car. I have to take the plate off, unscrew the plastic covers, unscrew more stuff, it’s a 45 minute process!
One person was upset they couldn’t see the plate.
This is bad enough just to gain access. I've done worse, and seen worse.
If they had the plate number, they'd still downvote.
It's "PLATE7"
@@isaac24 Great, now they're going to find it and tow it away.
Good thing you have 3 more.
@@isaac24 Yeah, with PLATE4, PLATE5, and PLATE6.
Sorry but the video never showed exactly what side did you turn the light bulb...smh
It only turns one way to remove the socket, and each side is different, so I cannot tell you clockwise or counterclockwise. You will know, because it will go one way, and not the other. There are TWO choices, that's it. It's not difficult.
Your video was good but for my 2002 Camry you need to remove the handle with a 10 mm wrench. Removing it like how you did could damage the assembly. I'd advise others watching to just remove the handle with a 10 mm wrench rather then trying to pry it off with a screw driver.
There can be slight variations between the model years. This one is a 2003. The point is, the general concept and procedure is the same.
Bulbs are not coming out with a simple twist. Cant get them out to place bulbs
Twist harder. A LOT harder. When they've been in the car for 15-20 years they get stuck. Just like all the nuts and bolts on the car that have rusted.
@@jaykay18 I did this repair today and silicone lubricant was able to make them easier to twist. Maybe you could recommend this to new commenters like this
@@colt2274 I'd have used an oil of some kind, a penetrating oil like PB Blaster. But whatever's on hand and works, will get the job done. Thanks.
