I think Nomad is the best place to start getting into Indie makeup. Their formula is very forgiving, easy to blend, and they have a variety of color stories with more or less color and neutrals.

Also, I've heard a lot of brands put micro glitters (like ColourPop's sequin shadows) into mattes to help with blending the dark colors.
