I wasn't using it only because I didn't know about the option of sending all keyboard inputs even if the window is not active. I've underestimated the power of a right click in Reaper. Thanks, Kenny
Hi Kenny and thanks for your tutorials as always. I think you forgot to mention that the Virtual MIDI Keyboard is velocity sensitive in the sense that if you click on the lower part of the key the velocity is higher and viceversa. But the important thing here is that the last velocity triggered that way is the one that the computer keyboard will trigger after pressing a letter/number.
Highly recommend to add a button to your toolbar to both (1) open the midi keyboard and (2) toggle the "keys always to keyboard" setting (you can find both with 'keyboard in Actions). This way you can open it up quickly and do what you need to do. I usually use it to check sounds while browsing through patches
AWESOME !!!! 4:39 - Send all Keyboard input to Virtual Midi Keybaord Wow!!! I have been struggling with this .. and your tip helped me ☺☺ 7:00 - Record MIDI Overdub Another Goldmine !! 👌👍
One thing I would have also showcased is the fact that you can right click on any key, not just a C. Like right click on a F# and it'll be the center key. I know it seems obvious to you and me, but this is SO much easier than most virtual keyboards in DAWs. It's actually what sold me on Reaper! Just a small thing. Just being able to use any note on your laptop keys is pretty amazing, instead of just stuck on C unless you dig into some menus Love you videos, you've helped me tons
Sometimes I feel as if you are following me around 😂 Had to go downstate today and had an itch to write some stuff. Couldn't lug my 88 keyboard since I'm visiting someone's house. I didn't even know you could do this in Reaper, awesome vid!
Hey Kenny just subscribed. What a crazy time to be alive with Reaper! Coming from beginner Cubase days way back in Windows 3.1. You're tutorials are great, super simple and cohesive. I just subscribed to Adam Steel's channel and he seems to be leaving but is revamping his whole "New to Reaper" series it seems. It's people like yourselves that make this enjoyable. There are so many youtubers doing this for audio/video/3d tutorials, etc. My memories back in the day are of people not wanting to share info and I don't know why? You do not and I salute you. Cheers Sir!
Wow using Reaper for 6 yrs now and I am feeling extremly stupid. I was searching for making the keyboard active for inputs all the time, I was even right clicking and dock it but never seen that option below to make the keyboard constantly reactive for keyboard xD Well, therefore we have Kenny for that! Thanks! Oh but there is one more thing, I am using a QWERTZ keyboard, therefore Y and Z is switched, is that changeable somewhere using different keyboard layouts?
hey thanks for the guide i have one question why are my keys on the virtual keyboard complete random ? yours are organized from q w e r t for example or z x c v. My virtual keys are all over the place. How do i get the keys on the virtual keyboard organized in a straight line like yours?
I haven't tried this yet, but you could probably assign a note on the virtual keyboard that's outside the range of your samples to the Sustain CC (64) then use it to add sustain as you record. But if you are playing complicated parts with both hands you'd probably need a third hand to do it realtime. 🙂
I liked the feature and the video, but I've found the VMPK interface more flexible and superior, allowing me to use extra keys in my Macbook Air default keyboard, is it possible to link VMPK with Reaper? I'm struggling with these virtual cable midi devices.
Nice tutorial. I tried it and it works. One questions though: How did you get different sounds triggered by the VMK? Mine seems to default to just one sound.
your videos are very helpful. It would be great if we could edit the default velocity of the virtual keyboard so that the notes aren't all hitting at 100.

You seem to have each indivdual sample within a track mapped to a virtual key, whereas mine sets it so that all checkced samples play in the key of the key pressed. Can't figure out how to remap those?
Oh man Ive rewatched this a couple times now and I did everything identically and i hear the keys when playing midi. But for some reason it just wont write it down in the midi track, it only plays an audio...
KENNY!!! whats up!!! just wanted to say hey "thanks for this video!! I got my funky bad ass EZbass to work with my funky bad ass virtual keyboard!!! ISNT THAT COOL!?!?!😯
How can I set up a toolbar icon to do several things at once? I’d like a single toolbar icon (or hot key) that opens the virtual MIDI and enables ‘send keys to plug-in’ simultaneously.
Just go to actions, click to Create a new action. Give it a name and add "show midi keyboard" as well as "send all input to VKB" then just add that action to your custom toolbar
Hi kenny, do you have a video showing how to use add joystick to midi since i am struggling since yesterday to make my analog joystick emulate the mod wheel?
Thank you Kenny for so many information videos 👍. When you selected Input MIDI / Virtual MIDI keyboard (2:17) are you unselecting the input USB MIDI keyboard? If so, if once I use the USB midi keyboard, and another time I use the virtual keyboard, do I have to change the settings on the track each time? I hope not! I answer to myself. By selecting All inputs you can use both
Selecting "All inputs" permits you to use any MIDI device available. Then you can filter by MIDI channels, using one device on channel one and another on channel two for example
Hi! I would be grateful if someone could help me out. I've chosen Input MIDI>Virtual MIDI keyboard>All channels as Kenny did, however I can't hear anything while I am playing it or when I export it. How can I hear what I am playing?
Make sure you : - record arm - activate track monitoring - choose the right midi input on the track - make sure you're setting the right midi channel as an input - make sure you have samples and/or a VSTi loaded on the track
I had this issue, check you if have enabled midi in midi/devices and the send all keyboard input to virtual midi keyboard shown in the video is essential for it to work

I've never tried the virtual keyboard, will have a play with it today. Thanks Kenny.
I use midi to send signals to other software. This will definitely improve my workflow.
Thanks again, Kenny!
I wish the virtual keyboard worked with midi input. Horizontal layout is far better for visualizing when playing.

there is no option for my to select virtual midi keyboard in the input selection, so I cannot hear the virtual keyboard
Right-click on the record arm button and select it from there.
Thanks Kenny!!! I always forget to select the virtual keyboard again. hahaha
Put if in your toolbar as a reminder that it exists :)

There is NO way to use Hold Pedal with it right?
I guess not while recording something, but you can add it later in the MIDI Editor

I show in the video that I set up different samples for each key.
@@REAPERMania Thanks Kenny. I'll research your past videos on how to do that.
