Great vid as usual, Kenny. Quick question: with the square shape on volume automation, there are noticeable clicks (see 7:28.) I'm guessing that those can be removed by using a shape other than a strict square (I'm thinking *mostly* square, but slightly rounded off), but I'm not sure if Reaper allows for this in the Parameter Modulation dialogue. Any suggestions?
I noticed this after I shot the video and kind of regretted using the gain knob in ReaEQ. Try using a volume plugin and modulating that instead. I actually did that and re-did the audio on that last clip in the video at 8:33. I think it sounds much better. You could also filter out the low end a bit as that's what's causing the clicking. Thanks.
You're right, using the EQ plug-in makes for very harsh attacks -> clicks. I tried the JS Volume/Pan Smoother instead, and there are no more clicks! The set-up is the same.
Hi Kenny, thanks for the great tutorials. Reaper is the best daw, but ony because you show us the magic you can do with it! But I have a challenge for you and for anyone who follows this great channel :-) I would like to apply two different effects to my guitar signal, depending on the average RMS. A kind of gate that splits the signal depending on the average RMS... My project is toexperiment with overdrive / distortion to make some fresh new sounds. I would like to "clone" the sound of 2 or 3 different overdrive pedals with a wave-shaper plugin ( in order to emulate 3 levels of distortion), but I would like to blend these 3 kinds of distortion depending on the guitar average volume. In this way it would resemble the dynamic response of an amplifier, where i could set the least distorted sound for the lower RMS values, and then 2 different thresholds to make the more distorted sounds kick in. But the distortion will have different charactes making possibly some crazy new sounds Maybe I should try splitting the guitar sound in 3 different busses depending on the average volume with some kind of gating?? In each of the bus I could place one kind of waveshaper plugin with the sound I want and then recombine the sound in a group?? I think it should be possible with reaper, what do you think??
Every time I see a notification for one of your videos, Kenny, I make sure to set some time to watch it properly as it always contains superb workflow tips that can revolutionise the way we work. Each one, in a small way, allows me to concentrate on the creative flow rather than worrying about how to do what I want to do... I love your videos and look forward to every one! :)
This is one of precision issues. 0.33 is not exactly equals 1/3. As far as I can see, reaper allows to use up to four digits. 0.3333 is more precise value, so phase drift will be less in that case.
I do my gating with ReaGate, sidechaining the gate off of the audio from a ReaSynth midi loop. Then you can have any rhythm you like, when you like, and it doesn't go out of time.
@@JonHarris77 If you enter something like 0.33333333, then close window and then open it again, you will see 0.3333. That's why I suppose (I'm not really sure) that reaper uses only 4 digits and thus it's maximum possible precision. I haven't found precision values in documentation, I don't have access to source code and I am too lazy to measure actual precision ))
I use a simple jsfx script. It's actually quite fun to solve these problems this way as it exercises the grey matter a little. So you put the stuff you want to gate in a folder, add this jsfx to the folder track, and midi clips controlling the gating to the folder track. Put this on a track, send audio (but not midi) into it, add midi clips to trigger the gate, and you're done. It switches on with _any_ noteon, and off with _any_ noteoff, to keep it simple. But then it is a trivial jsfx script you can write off the top of your head in a few minutes. While you don't generally want to midirecv() inside the @sample section, this does make the code a bit easier to write. @sample while(midirecv(offset,msg1,msg2,msg3)) ( cmd = msg1 >> 4; ( cmd == 0x9 ) ? ( tgt_gain = 1; ) : ( cmd == 0x8 ) ? ( tgt_gain = 0; ); midisend(offset,msg1,msg2,msg3); ); ( gain != tgt_gain ) ? ( ( gain > tgt_gain ) ? ( gain -= dg; ( gain < tgt_gain ) ? ( gain = tgt_gain; ); // overshoot management ); ( gain < tgt_gain ) ? ( gain += dg; ( gain > tgt_gain ) ? ( gain = tgt_gain; ); // overshoot management ); ); spl0 *= gain; spl1 *= gain;
Perfect timing again. I'll be using this often. I find a gated synth often helps my mid tempo songs move along better. I have been using Zebralette a lot, it's a great little synth. Thanks again, Kenny!
try also, for very rapid motions, to put a LowPass Filter after the gated plugin, to minimize the clicks generated by the very rapid switchings. Indeed during the 16 notes passage, is some way earable.
You can save as a track template. Maybe for each synth you use . It should still work (albeit with a little tweak) with any preset or custom setting you use...
Nice, Kenny, as per usual! Will be trying this one out for definite. I have Zebralette downloaded but haven’t installed it - this has changed my mind. Can also see many possibilities with vox and guitar! Thanks man!
Is there a chance that the developers add more precision to the sliders? Sometimes i find it hard to get exact results using the parameter modulation windows. Great tutorial.
Quick question, is there anyway on Reaper's pitch correction software to make squares and rectangles around the bare wave not, so it is easier to read? Like squares and rectangles like Logic Pro has with their pitch correction or like Melodyne has. Is there anyway to do this in Reaper for its stock pitch correction?
How might one go about switching between different set speeds, ie; 1/8, 1/16th notes, etc, using a MIDI controller (to get more complex rhythmic patterns)?
Hi Kenny, Not sure how or where to submit this question. When working on long audio recordings (vocal, dialog) is there an easy and fast way to identify the loudest peaks in the audio? Doing this manually is very time consuming. When rendering is complete the Stats/Charts "Jump to loudest sample position in project" only indicates one point in the audio and of course that's only available after rendering. Some files I work on are well over an hour long. Many thanks for your excellent tutorials!
I guess it would depend on why you would want to find them. If it is to create a more consistent level throughout, maybe a compressor would help in a more automated way?
@@dougsmith9679 I do use compression but in vocal speech there are sometimes some abnormally loud peaks I like to pull down, then I normalize with common gain. All in an effort to get as much even volume overall. A lot of dynamic range in other words sometimes due to a small minority of samples.

Hi Kenny, I have a question unrelated to the topic you have explained in this video, I apologize in advance for this, how can we apply the Andrew Scheps Rear Bus technique in the Reaper?
Can you tell me why I'm getting an error " can't write to recording files, does the track exist?" When trying to record my guitar ? The trouble with e.g. 0.33 quarter notes is that the phase of the LFO will drift relative to the pulse of the track.

how do you record a wet and dry trac in one go on one track useing a guitar vst . and have them embeded together and switch back and forth like TAKES

you can render in dry run mode without actually creating the file and there's a host of actions under Calculate loudness name in the Action list
