    What a great idea. Rather than duplicating the audio I used four tracks. The guitar recording was on the first track (Master Send off) with the Splitter plugin set to '2 in 6 out'. I then routed Low, Mid and High to 'send' tracks for processing. This method uses one more track but only requires a single Splitter.

    • @marcchurch1245
      @marcchurch1245 2 года назад

      Not positive, but I think you could still do that with 3. The track with the splitter sends one band to the master, and the other two bands to receiving tracks. Just make sure any fx on the one track go after the splitter, and make the sends pre-fader, so you can adjust the volume without affecting the send level.

    Holy s…! This is truly amazing and ingenious. Acoustic guitar sound is very important to me and so I found this video to be not only illuminating but also potentially incredibly useful. Thank you so much. I am grateful for all that you have taught me. I actually skipped the bass video, but based on the strength of this one I plan to watch it right away.

  • @mdk6502
    @mdk6502 2 года назад +5

    Why three copies of the audio and three instances of the splitter? Why not have the audio and splitter on one track, with sends of the three outputs of the splitter to separate tracks with the compressors? Then there would only be one place to adjust the crossover frequencies so they could not be set inconsistently. Plus it would use less CPU I think.

    So have we have basically reinvented ReaCompX here? I understand it's more than that because one can adjust the volume of each band. I have always had a difficult time hearing, and therefore doing anything useful with compression. And by doing anything useful I mean not making a mix significantly worse. It wasn't until Kenny's Transient Controller video last year that compression started to make any sense to me, and now I'm able to do some subtle things at that level. But the whole idea of multiband compression is beyond my ear's skill level, even though I have a decent enough studio set up. OK, not entirely true. I can make De-Essers fix problems, that's an example of narrow band compression, but not what' I'd consider multiband. What are we really trying to achieve using compressors in this way? I totally understand adjusting the volume of each band. And I understand to some ears it just sounds better. But what problem is it solving and what are we listening for?

    • @robertl.arbogast8189
      @robertl.arbogast8189 2 года назад +1

      I appreciate your question and also barely 'get' compression. I think the key here may be seen at 6:47, where K moves the slider to exactly where the MIDS
      pop out to my ear, (likewise HIs and LOs earlier). Which says to me: there's a sweet spot to take advantage of (manipulate) for that instrument in each of those bands.
      Again, I can't exactly tell you why,..and I worry, thinking that it's all coming down to the fidelity of my monitors/crossovers. ....just my $0.02...the popping out of
      those freqs may be key.

    • @henrikfisch

      For me (!) the differences are:
      a) I don't need to buy an additional multiband compressor
      b) I learn how to use Reaper
      c) I learn how a multiband compressor basically works
      d) on the way I get way more creative

    •  2 года назад +2

      The advantage is that you can treat each frequency range separately (EQ & any other treatment) and finely adjust the volume of each frequency range.
      You can do this on just one track by using the pin connectors to assign each FX to a frequency range and putting at the end a band joiner to join the 3 signals. But it's more convenient to control 3 tracks (you can put them in a single folder or subgoup if you want).

    • @Laneth
      @Laneth 2 года назад +3

      @ That's the workflow I imagined to be the most practical too, creating a parent folder track, especially with a signal split across multiple tracks.
      For someone that's completely new to mixing, having it laid out in this way can help all the individual pieces and processes fit together more coherently - but for those with a little more experience, similar results could surely be achieved in other ways. Just so happens that isn't the point of this particular video :)

    • @REAPERMania
      @REAPERMania  2 года назад +3

      You can do almost anything "within" a track. I just like to use multiple tracks so you don't have to go to the FX chain every time you want to tweak something.
