Buddy is so relaxed as he plays, it's amazing how powerful he is!

I wrote a drum chart for this song so I could properly play along to it. Just love the energy of this piece. Great song!!! David L. Saelens (drummer, Rock island, IL.) Posted 14 March 2019

I listened to this song over and over playing drums in my garage during the mid 70's.
Forgot what album it was on but I wore it out for sure. What a band.

@@brucebarlie8544 Swinging New Big Band was the second album. The first was with Sammy Davis Jr., in 1965 or so. Don't remember the name of the album.

Tom Garling is a beast! Wish they took this song a little slower though, I think this sounds to fast, for me at least.

i agree on the tempo. the time signature on Rich AT The Top was more in line

Marginally faster, but remember Buddy had been playing this chart for twenty years at this point.
Just not a soloists’ band. In Maynard’s band, or Woody’s, the soloist would come up front, and the leader would tell you who it is. Not Buddy.
Then again, Buddy didn’t typically have many strong soloists-Steve Marcus, Bobby Shew, and Tom Garling being among the exceptions.

this is the beauty of youtube
we all have the record with John Bunch but did you ever wonder, "what would Barry do with this chart"? Or Bob Kaye or Bill Cunliffe? or Lee Musiker? This allows us to confirm our hunches

Yes, I agree. This was a little fast for my taste; however let's keep in mind that Buddy and the band had been playing this terrific tune and arrangement by Phil Wilson for 20 years at that point! I am thinking that Buddy just wanted to shake it up just a bit, so he brightened the tempo. The first album from 1966, live at The Chez in LA, this cut was a nice easy swing (about 110 BPM) in keeping with the Basie feel on this.

This was a VERY good trombone solo from a VERY good player. For an "off the chain" bone sole check out a Watrous or Mc Chesney solo. Thanks
