This is glass grade. I mean, you got...you got crystals in here 2 inches, 3 inches long. This is pure glass. You're a damn artist! This is art, Mr. White!
You can gently (very very gently) cut it with a hot knife. 1. Be careful. The entire metal of the knife will be hot 2. The edges of the set sugar glass will likely come out jagged 3. It isn't a quick and easy process, but the thinner the glass, the easier and faster it will be to do this. Hope I helped!
Fun fact about this: there is only one spot in the world where trinite exists. And that's at that specific blast site. There was only one location at which it occured like that, and they named the "element" trinite after the bomb site called trinity.
LOL! I love that this video suggests sugar glass be used for prop glass. I guess... I'm looking into it as a way to decorate a cake-- to make a dome or for stained glass windows on a gingerbread house. So many possibilities. But prop glass was not on the menu. LOL!
I broke my Mother's Window playing baseball so i made a sheet of sugar glass I put it in and let it stick with Gorilla Glue she never noticed until it rained
yeah, you can eat it, it's just hardened sugar, though I wouldn't eat it by itself, (it's probably sharp), so I'd eat it with something gooey (Ex- marshmallows) so that it cushions the glass so it doesn't cut your mouth.
Are you stirring it while the heat is on? If so, it will burn and turn brown/caramel. When I boil sugar, I don't touch it while the heat is on. I also heat my sugar at medium/medium-low. I think it takes around half an hour to get to 300 degrees.
Um. After pouring, is it supposed to harden? Or are you supposed to stick it in the refrigerator to harden?? Mine didn’t didn’t firm up. What’s happened?? Did I miss a step that was never said???
Help! I've had the sugar mixture boiling on the stove for 2 HOURS now, and it's not reaching 290°/300°!! It's been steady at 230, I turned up the heat just a smidge, and it's now at 250° and starting to turn yellow.... Help! This is practice right now, but I need to make the sugar glass later this week for a cake! I need it as clear as possible to look realistic!!
Hey Sebastian, like you I was in the same boat. I must have blow through three batches before I found this video. I think the video needs to do a better job of explaining that it takes a long time to bring up to 300 (hard crack) on a candy thermometer. I found mine at walmart for about 4 bucks. It will seem like it's taking forever, but the key really is to keep it at a low heat and gradually bring it up to temperature. So it was boiling for a while... mine was hard within an hour.
once its cold, can I melt it again? i have this very tiny silicone molds i want to use but i can only do 4 at a time so the rest of the "glass" would be lost :(
Lord Shnufflebunny some powdered sugar (like icing sugar) is literally just normal crystaline sugar (sucrose) that's been pulverized. There is glucose (dextrose) powder you can get too, but I have no clue if it would work aswell. I would think so.
8oz.. If you're still not sure, put your hands together and form a cup. That sort of creates a half-cup, so.. (don't use your hands to handle the stuff, though.. Just estimate..) Also, it depends on your hand size.. 8-inches from tip of the middle finger to tip of the palm creates 1/2 cup.
HI all, I need to troubleshoot. I did what the video said but mine still turned brown. The temp wouldn't raise so I had to put the stove on medium instead of low to get it up to 300 degrees...even after an hour... Any suggestions? Thanks!
The glass tends to crystallize, so you need something acetic to prevent that from happening. That is why you use cream of tartar.
Thanks

Lol
well actually, it's just basic chemistry. But thank you, I'm glad it's acceptable.

Acceptable?!? Your the goddamned iron chef!!

Use a blowtorch on the glass after it has set to get rid of bubbles ;)
Thx
Good tip!
You're a life saver. Make sugar glass windows for a gingerbread miniature you you just saved my life 🤣😂👏🏻👏🏻🏆
I love how the video is about Sugar Glass but at the end its like "DID YOU KNOW THAT A *NUCLEAR BOMB*"
Fun fact about this: there is only one spot in the world where trinite exists. And that's at that specific blast site. There was only one location at which it occured like that, and they named the "element" trinite after the bomb site called trinity.
I WANT A NUCLEAR REACTOR IN THE CAR THAT I DON’T EVEN OWN
uh
I thought that would come out funny
Instructions unclear, made a nuclear bomb.

Yes, use a quarter teaspoon of lemon juice, or none at all. The cream of tartar prevents crystallization.
I did this and it worked
Thanks for posting love candy glass
Use a blow torch to pop the bubbles it work a lot better!
Um. After pouring, is it supposed to harden? Or are you supposed to stick it in the refrigerator to harden?? Mine didn’t didn’t firm up. What’s happened?? Did I miss a step that was never said???
How do you make this less sticky?
I was instantly interested in it as soon as he said crack.
oh right never used it before but you learn something new everyday
This is not hiesenburg level

YAY I LOVE TO EAT GLASS
Yes.
I don't have a saucepan big enough for the recipe using, could I use a pot instead?
Bryon B You can always divide the recipe if you want but you can do it in a pot. This may seem late saying how you posted this a year ago
Will the glass melt with the temperature of your hand?
Once it is set will I be able to cut it?
Can I use this to make a nail polish organiser? Or it is just for eating?
*sigh*
Just for eating
* Fact in the end of the video gets explained *

A SEE THROUGH, GOLD PLATE-
Can i use powder sugar?
Lord Shnufflebunny some powdered sugar (like icing sugar) is literally just normal crystaline sugar (sucrose) that's been pulverized. There is glucose (dextrose) powder you can get too, but I have no clue if it would work aswell. I would think so.
Pfff, I'm not gonna use it as prop glass. I'm gonna eat it as a snack. After breaking it up into smaller pieces of course, Yum!!!
Will the sugar melt at room temperature?
@allen2688 No, a candy thermometer is always needed for this project
This will be perfect for my Walter White Halloween costume! :D
Does this work with a grey sheet pan?
'Be careful and avoid being burned!' Well thanks for the tip. Haha -.-
Is cream of tartar absolutely necessary, or can I leave it out?
Wait, so is it edible?
Does that sugar glass now still melts in water ?
now i can lick a candy-sugar window, while surviving a hurricane, and picking a lock!!! thanks Howcast (:
I dont have corn syrup. Can I use something different?
what can i use insted of cream of tartur?
what happens without the non stick spray?
It stick (no dur)
Lol
It sticks.....
That awkward moment when you relize how many videos howcast has...
Is this the same recipe used to make prop glass?

could I pour this over a pic to seal for a cake topper?
Can you eat this.
Yes
It's what's used in movies
+charlie “chilliebar” tomkins oh yeah huh? Lol I never thought of that😂
Yes
I'm considering putting it on cupcakes. Is it hard to eat tho? Cause another recipe I looked at had to smash it with a hammer...
@betterthanyoux33- it says a sause pan but I would suggest using a larger cooking pot just for safety........:)
What happens without the cream of tarter
Supposedly something to do with sugar crystals not sticking together as the mix boils (I read that on youtube somewhere XD)
Can you make this without cream of tartar because I have no clue what that is
We miss you watchwellcast
is it caster sugar or granulated??
This might be a tad bit late....but caster....caster sugar
That's a colorful story :3
How long does the candy stay hard?
Forever
Do u absolutely need tarter and a candy thermometer?
yes, thats why its a recipe...
the cream of tartar only helps the glass to not stain... you dont need it but the glass might turn yellow
Thanks :)
Bullshit
does it melt or something?
So I attempted this but it would not go over 120*, therefore it would not harden...😔
whats a dl is that an imperial measurement
Can u use a pan
The sugar is heated for too long, and that means it is caramelizing. Make sure the heat is on low.
Add some drops of blue foodcoloring and feel badass
what is cream of tartar?

Yeah you're right.
Sooooo, is it edible???

Did you know that the on the day of the My Lai massacre some of the soldiers involved had been taking sugar?
It's more like glass. Movie props where they smash things over people's heads are made with this stuff.
I'm going to eat some
