I feel like this is the first real review of Paper Like that I've come across. Many others are sponsored by them and claim it some amazing new invention for better drawing experience.. I'm glad I didn't buy into it and watched your review first!

Hm, I already bought it and noticed the same that you say here afterwards. I tried to skip the videos as soon as I heard they got them gifted from paperlike, but there are almost no other "free" videos about this product. Nevermind, I am still looking forward to it. :) Hope it arrives soon. A designer in our company is using it on a daily and at least he loves it.

UPDATE: - I re-tried Paperlike again to see if it changed in quality, it's the same. I tossed it out.
And I just finally changed my Tech Armor cover to a brand new Tech Armor cover. (I accidentally REALLY gouged it) but wow, two years drawing on a $5 cover that actually feels like paper and doesn't wear down your apple pencil while drawing. Be sure to read through the comments to see other honest opinions.

It’s funny I to as criticized for being an American... guys, I work for a German company. And they care more
About quality and craft than anyone. Anyone who says $30 for an iPad Screencover isn’t overpriced is high... or connected to the maker of the product and they can’t take a critique. I get it. It’s okay guys. I know the truth can hurt a little but I’m glad this review has saved some people some $$$, especially artists who aren’t necessarily rolling in dough.

Three years later, this video is still the gift that keeps on giving😁
I never tried the “official” PaperLike, but was using another one reasonably priced from Amazon. It’s pretty good if the only thing you’re doing is drawing on your iPad, but I also play mobile games that require touch, and my screen film was just too thick and prevented fluid swipes. Again, perfect for drawing, not so much for anything else.
I’ve been binging your _Secret Forces_ videos and so The Algorithm suggested this. I’m so glad I watched and when my Tech Armor screen film came and was installed, I was *amazed* at how there was enough texture to make drawing a great experience, but not so much “tooth” that it inhibited finger swipes and selections. I’m so impressed, I bought another two (four total) just in case it ever stops being sold😂 I’ll never use another screen film for drawing. Tech Armor owes you a kickback👍🏾😉

I have thought for a while what screen protector to get and figured I would leave my 2 cents here too after buying a TechArmor one. Thank you for this video as it helped me loads in making an honest decision.
    1) With the cover by Tech Armor, there us no more horrible glass sound when writing! First thing that stood out to me, and it is AMAZING!
    2) As opposed to what you read that ‘matte’ screen protectors feel
like sandpaper, this one (I got the HD clear film screen protector)
feels more "smooth" actually. There is slightly more resistance,
but in a soft way. It’s a bit hard to explain, but in other words: The apple pen glides effortlessly over the screen yet obeys every move you make, unlike on glass, where it "slips".
    3) The anti-glare does exactly as promised, so even under a bright
lamp the screen is perfectly legible. At the small cost of a more 'refracted' white hue on screen but that is simply the pay off that cannot be avoided with matte protection (and well worth it in my opinion).
    4) I'm a perfectionist to the core, so prepping my screen for application took forever (until I was happy with how clean it was and triple checking that it was and remained dust free) but then, the screen protector went on effortlessly, perfectly, and bubble free, as promised.
    5) I was a bit apprehensive that with the case around my iPad as well, the screen protector would peel off (or be pushed back off) the sides, but the edges fit just over it and the protector didn’t budge at all when putting it in the case, so very pleasantly surprised there.
Well worth every penny so far, curious to see how it will hold over time, and how long the matte layer will hold. But seeing there’s a second screen protector in the box still, I’m sure this purchase will last me a while!!

Thank you for taking the time to create and post this video. It was most helpful!
For Jan and others who pushed back on the not including the "parts that just get binned" criticism, I would like to submit this comment. I don't necessarily think this is an American-only thing, but when I purchase something, presentation is often indicative of quality. If I give my boss a report that isn't neatly formatted and contains spelling and grammar errors, he's going to think, based on the presentation, that I didn't put much effort into it, or didn't care enough about it or his opinion of me, to polish the goods before delivery. You should also consider that you are selling to a market that's paid a high price for the iPad Pro 12.9" model specifically because of the quality of this product. The onus of the screen protector's installation is on the end user. Everything should be included to ensure that when the product is installed, it has a good chance of being perfectly done; the way that you intended for people to enjoy it.
The part in Jan's response, "I guess I wasn't experienced enough to know that people will not type Camel Case...", had a somewhat passive-aggressive tone that I don't think was intentional. It would have been better to create links in both formats that point to the same page and say, "We have corrected the link. Thanks for helping us rectify the problem. Please review the instructions and let us know if there's anything we missed." There's no need to throw yourself on any sword and no need to talk about what people will or won't do that should have been obvious. Correct the problem by ensuring people following the old link or the new link will get to the instructions, and move on.

Gaahh. I paid for the extra $16 shipping too which tracks it and I just got an email this morning thanking me for my business and it said it will be shipped within the next 7 business days. I could've ordered multiple sets of the tech armor and the price still wouldn't have been as high. Oh man! You live, you learn. Bottom line: Dont be a sucker, do your research and amazon prime will always be your friend. Thank you for the honest review. I am currently saving up for the iPad Pro to do artwork, and have been deciding what protective accessories I should get, especially since I've seen drop tests (-_-). Paperlike is recommended by almost all RUclipsrs, and I think that is due to them earning money if we buy from their affiliate link. This is a big problem for all viewers who depend on their reviews. I was also worried about the tips of the iPad pencil wearing down more quickly if I used the Paperlike screen protector. And honestly, I don't think it would improve the quality of the artwork. Many digital artists use Wacom screens without a screen protector and their art isn't hindered by a slip from what I can see. I rarely like videos and because of your actually honest review, you damn well have earned one!

Been using the screen protecter for a few months now. It's good, I like it. It gives of a nice "scratchy noise", and feels really tactile. That said, the packaging was really cheap, and it was a bit embarrassing even.
The bad thing is that the protector is really easy to scratch. Get a few crumbs in (crumbs get stuck on the cover sometimes from the kitchen table) and BAM, scratched. How dry bredcrumbs can be harder than a piece of plastic I will never know.
Something else worth noting I've yet to see anyone bring up is that there's a slight "rainbow" effect on the screen protector. it's not bad, but if the screen is completely white, you will notice a weird effect on the entire screen.
Knowing what I know now I would deffo go for another screen protector. I really like the resistance, but yeah.. It's overpriced and does not really feel that special in hindsight.

That's what I've been thinking about, it's just a marketing gimmick that makes you wanna spend 35 bucks for matte screen which obviously you can have it for less than 10 bucks or even less. Marketing is psychology things tbh. I've got laptop with matte display, when i try with my apple pencil, yeah it does make a different but not something like papers. So, i think the cheap matte screen would be fined as long as it can draw with the apple pencil. Great video to show people which product that really has the technology or just the one that relies on people's psychology.

Super helpful review. I could not believe the cheapo little cleaning pads they gave you. Also, the lack of a working web page to describe the installation process is unforgivable, especially these days. For most of us, putting on a screen protector can be a bit daunting, especially lining it up properly and getting all the bubble out, and PaperLike should have had the proper procedure available on a web page. Great video review from you! Thanks again!!!

Hey, I just invested in an iPad Pro for my art and I'm so excited for it to arrive. I've gotten a generic cheap matte protector but I want to invest in a legit one next pay-day. Was wondering if you could help me out with some questions.
Is it possible you could comment on the differences between the two brands experience specifically - all I could pick up is that you thought paper-like was more rough? (which is a good thing right?...but you make it sound bad) You don't mention the moire (rainbow effect) on the pixels with either of them? Why specifically did you miss the old screen protector and go back, you didn't really mention the actual reason. Thanks! :) Just trying to see which one is best for me. Also have you heard of ELECOM screen protectors? It's apparently really good. I was wondering if that was one that you tried since you mention you tried quite a few! :)
    TIA!

i wish we could develop something with all the included installment items a very nice package like the ones the ipad pro magnetic covers have with the see-through plastic would be nice for the packaging and actually have a ipad mold so you can place the ipad in the packaging and have the packaging become a tool to install the screen and it would be nice to have 3 screens 1 at 300 grit another at 200 grit 100 grit? and then add big enough screen wipes and cloths and finally a good instruction pamphlet or video. maybe we can name it the "Coffman Paper Screens"

When you pulled out that microscopic cleaning cloth that killed it for me, they over charge and cheap out on necessary accessories. Too bad they come up on top on Google and Amazon searches. I'm going with Tech Armor, think that Tech Armor should know what a great job your doing for their company. Everyone should contact them and let them know, maybe they'll send you a new iPad Pro with a lifetime supply of Tech Armor.
Thanks for your review, you just made a lot people happy.

I realize that if you invest into a matte screen protector it primarily benefits people using their devices for writing and sketching. However, I would like to know how much it would impact photos for photo editing? I would imagine based on all the reviews I’ve watched quite a bit as no one has really done that test to show the color impact on photo editing which is primarily what I would be doing. Though I would love the matte feel on my device.

    • @DJCoffman
      @DJCoffman  5 лет назад +1

As you might see, I do full color comics on mine, many with special effect brushes. There is just a very very slight difference from screen to screen. But you also have this on just about any device to monitor these days. Nothing is ever going to fully match unless it's identical screens. The cool thing is, Tech Armor are only 9.99, so you can try it and if you hate it, you haven't spent much at all to find this out. Go experiment, nothing is permanent and the covers come right off :)

Hi D.J. Thanks for the honest review and I’m sorry you didn’t appreciate our minimal packaging. We haven’t focused our attention on retail, which is why we haven’t got a fancy packaging yet. We also don’t ship a squeegee, as it would land in the garbage right away and everyone has a credit card or plastic card in hand.
The video is available in bit.ly/PaperOn - I gues I wasn’t experienced enough to know that people will not type CamelCase correctly and simply write in lower case. Which is what regretfully happens too often to be honest. Big lesson, we’ve printed the new instruction sheet with a new lower-case link.
I’m actually very surprised you don’t feel the difference between the Tech Armor and the PaperLike. In my tests it was rubbery and not “rough”. I suppose that doesn’t make a difference to you.
About the absurdly small wet-dry wipes: That’s not the cheapest in the market, but it’s the only available wet-dry set available. We’ve actually ditched that by now and we’ll soon be shipping the PaperLike with a bigger - more tablet-worthy wet wipe.
Even though you’re not convinced of the PaperLike’s value, I really enjoyed your video and could have a good laugh when you got to the wet-wipe part. The PaperLike has been a game changer for the majority of our users (see the reviews paperlike.com/products/paperlike-for-ipad-12-9-inch ) and there is more to come. I hope you subscribed to our newsletter.
A question: In the video you show your iPad “circling”. It looks like it’s standing on something in the middle. What is that?

    • @DJCoffman
      @DJCoffman  6 лет назад +25

Jan Sapper I can understand the minimal packaging, but that should decrease the cost possibly making the price more competitive for what this is. Basically, and no offense intended here, but honestly there is nothing special about this compared to other non-glare matte finish covers on the market like the TechArmor. Maybe we’re onto something though, as a working professional, I literally drew on the Paperlike for over 40 hours in a week, very detailed pieces, coloring, linework as sketching. Maybe with more use the oils from the hand make both of these feel about the same. My hand doesn’t usually get oily I have dryer skin and don’t need to wear gloves with my Cintiqs.
The Spin is from the “SpinPad Grip” I use on the back. It’s currently out of stock on Amazon but here’s the link www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015NOI7MA/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8 and you can see videos about it on RUclips. It’s generally the best stand/grip for many digital Artists. I was referred to it by Rob Sketcherman who travels the globe doing live urban sketching on his for Apple and other official brands.
When you get another version of PaperLike or go into 2.0 mode, I’ll try it out. Or possibly with the new new iPads coming this year.

Lower the price if you can and you will probably sell a lot more and make up the difference. I find it hard to believe it costs that much more to produce a screen protector with more tooth or texture, but that's just a guess on my part. I went with one on Amazon at about a third of the cost. I bought a tempered glass matte screen protector for my iPhone that has a lifetime warranty for $8.

I didnt want to answer to your post but i just couldnt let it go. You sell your item for tripule the price of the competition, your packaging is nome existant Wich will cause eventual problem in delivery, your "extra items" are basicly a joke. While the product itself night be good quality , which im not questioning but overall it is definetly not worth tripule the price of the competition. The simple fact that you took the time to coment. that in this video shows that my opinion is correct. Ps: i can see the arrogance in the way you responded , it doesnt look good.

      1) triple*
      2) Arrogance? The dude kept apologizing, admitting his mistake, and decided to change the wipes that the video complained about. This makes me ask again, what arrogance?

It's funny how one not so positive (non sponsered video) will mess with their sales. Usually I wouldn't let one negative review sway me but combining that with the high price tag and long shipping times settled it for me. I'm going with the tech amor.
I would happily pay a little more than the cheaper tech amor (maybe $15-20). But the product would need to be on Amazon prime at least. It's 2018, people are not willing to wait weeks for a product.

Thank you! Nice video. I actually "had to" buy the iPad when entering university (its mandatory because all IT systems are designed for the use of tablets, but therefore the basic iPad version is free for students). And since I got a iPad pro and like to draw... i considered trying out some digital art.
To me, it seems a bit "hard" to switch between layers, etc. Is there a possibility to connect a keyboard to the tablet and swap layers, colors, tools with the keyboard?
And since you are in that comic area, that is exactly what I intend to do with my tablet. Maybe a few recommendations on set up, additional tools, apps, etc. ?
I will watch a few more videos of you now ;-)

But damnit!! I want more information: on a scale of 1-5 where do the tech armour and paperlike sit in roughness??
I’ve been using the tech armour the whole time I’ve owned an iPad, and although I like it I find it fucks with the resolution quite a bit and wondered if my eye sight was getting worse due to it? It is as though my eyes just figure there’s no point in fully focusing as it’ll never be really clear. That’s been my main gripe with Techarmour.
So I want a direct comparison between the two in terms of resolution impact. (And the wee rainbow effect)
I understand that some degradation is simply the nature of a matte cover but can anyone shed some details between the two?

    • @DJCoffman
      @DJCoffman  4 года назад

The issue you're talking about is probably about the same. Maybe I just got used to it :) - As far as roughness? Like I said the Tech Armor feels more like a toothy vellum but yet smooth with the stroke too. Paperlike felt like it would wear down the nibs (as others in the comments have said here.) - All in all, this review still stands, the Paperlike is WAY overpriced for the value it brings. TechArmor or the iCarez non-glare screens are much better.
