Many many companies use what's called the wet install. What happens there is you spray, place, squeegee, then wait.. Yes wait. What happens is the fluid that is left will leave in about 8-10 hours (overnight) so it would have gone away. 2. The way that you used for the icarez is called the hinge method. I use that one for all protectors. Use a roll of painters tape (less adhesive) and it comes right off like those stickers. 3. Dust is a pain.. And when you are at home and not in a controlled environment it's hard to deal with. Best way.. Go into bathroom run hot shower. Get it nice and steamy in the room. Dust can't float in high humidity. Then clean screen and place protector. Yeah the matte is what I have on my pro for drawing. I also require some tooth. Great video!

Honestly, modern iPad screens are durable enough that you don't have to worry about scratching it unless you drop it on concrete/asphalt, and a decent case will do more to prevent that than a screen protector. Especially if it has a cover flap. I think the only compelling reason to get one is probably for the paper feel and anti-glare, but I'm not sure that's worth the reduced clarity, constant replacements, and potentially getting dust or bubbles under it.

I use Mr.Shield anti-glare/matte...the feel to me is like my Intuos 4. After watching their RUclips instructions it was SUPER uncomplicated to install, and now I know how to get the dust from under the protector. I also like how the pencil sounds on the protector. Also, it seems one can wipe away pencil "marks" it's neato. Thanks for your videos!!
Thanks for the review. I'm torn I want some texture but really don't want the grain. Once someone makes a matte one with a similar finish to like say a matte dell ultrasharp I'm all on board.
I found that making my hand (left) that rests on the screen sticky with a bit of tape ~ I found my problem was my hand slipping more than the pencil - this solved my problem. I now prefer the slippery screen because the pencil is so fast and I handly have to touch the screen - saving me hand cramps after hours of work 👍🏼
Wish I had seen this video before my initial screen protector. I'm an artist who got one of the glass ones. Horrible lines. So I removed it and started drawing again, when I notice scratches everywhere. I soon figured out it was the adhesive residue left behind by the first screen protector. This residue then smudged horribly when I tried to clean it off. Had to use massive amounts of alcohol, which was NOT recommended anywhere, just to be able to see my screen again. And here I am about to put on the iCarez matte. Just hope I didn't ruin anything.
Easy way to install the flex screen protectors. Use a line of masking tap down the center portrait mode. Apply the protecter center first. The masking tap keeps the pressure steady so you can squeegee outwards and prevents rollups
I'm quite glad that I have a tempered glass screen protector on my iPad Pro 12.9, as I quite often slip when I'm drilling holes around my home and the iPad screen always threatens to get in the way, even if I'm nowhere near it. So now I can stop worrying.
the drill test should have been done on a protector when it was installed on a glass pane....it would have worked better... running a drill bit over such a thin piece of material is misleading and unfair to the manufacturers claim
Looking at this video gives me a better idea of what I can do to make the application process of my techarmor go better. Like you it was super SUPER difficult for me to install it bc a) the directions on the website/provided directions were aimed toward smaller devices b) the squeegee to remove the bubbles and gross bits kept on rubbing off and the paint on the squeegee got underneath the screen protector so there's bubbles on my anti-glare screen and theres specks when I'm drawing in procreate. The icares screen protector in comparison looks awesome but I am getting replacement screenprotectors from techarmor bc I pointed out the difficulty in getting their product on and clean under my ipad so I think what I will do is, position it, tape it down with some masking tape, remove the film and flip it over like the icares one :D. Thanks for the vid!!
Whatever you choose, don't go PaperLike. I was disappointed as there was no "tooth" or resistance as advertised or praised by reviewers. The feel is like a smooth paper, if anything. I have TechArmour, and have been happy with it. Now, I will give iCarez a shot because I trust your word, Brad, as well as enjoy your videos. :)
Wish I had watched this video before I bought the Tech Armor screen protector. The iCarez does look a lot easier to install. Although I had successfully installed my Tech Armor protector (despite one small speck of dust inside), it involved me ruining the first protector and went under a lot of stress installing the last one I have. I'll get the iCarez next time.
I have ordered a matte protector but the screen looks blurred, not sharp. For drawing I need a sharp screen. Is a glossy one better (altough for drawing bad) ?
+misterfung Thanks. Glad you noticed. I tried a different position standing up. My backlight is usually almost directly above but in this position it's more behind me. I liked it too.
Thans man. Great vid. Just one thought: I had a matte screen protector on my Surface pro 3 and that made my pen nib to wear off like lipstick (not that I know how lipstick wears off. I assume that lipstick wears off pretty fast). So how's the iPad pencil nib holding up against matte screen protectors?
It's in perfect condition. I did take the screen protector off last week to test another stylus so I only got 3 weeks with it on there but the Pencil hasn't shown any wearing down or anything.
Thank you for this video, really makes it easier for me to to choose which one to buy. I'm glad I watch you first, before I buy from Amazon prime ;) I actually have the iCare brand in my cart when I was watching this, it's the cheapest on amazon. Thank you!
Hey Brad! I’m a bit late but thx for the vid! Decided to give SuperShieldz matte screen protector a try. Quite impressed. Good balance between clarity and feel. Much more enjoyable iPad Pro illustration experience. I was already very used to the slippery feel without it, but I definitely appreciate the added bit of control. Thx! Btw I enjoy your work!👍✌️
Hey Mike. I actually "do" prefer the feel of the screen now more than I did at first. It's different. For the first couple of hours I wasn't 100% sure, but now I have no question. It's a better "drawing" experience ...for me anyway ;) Gives way more control of pen strokes. As for that awesome, beautiful iPad Pro screen? There's about a 10% +- reduction in sharpness because, well, it's matte ;) I don't have any major issues with that. The improvement in drawing feel far out weigh it in my case. I just increased the brightness a bit and generally I don't even notice it now. Benefits are texture and glare reduction. I've tried a couple of other matte protectors which messed with clarity way too much. For pure video watching ya can't beat a bare screen, but "this particular one" in my opinion is a pretty good balance between clarity and texture especially if your main focus is illustration and don't mind the modest trade-off. Hope that helps ;)
Mike Fudge np! And just FYI if u do go for this particular screen protector I did find that one of the three protectors in the pack had a slight crease/bend in one of the corners. Likely due to some kind of packaging problem from the manufacturer. A little annoying but since they're fairly inexpensive i just skipped that one. ✌️
Mike F that's a shame. The original poster said it only had a 10% reduction in quality/: ah well. I've heard good things about the tech armor that brad used though
SketchArtByMarc thanks a lot for sharing your experience. Did you experience the jittery / wobble feeling when drawing straight lines? And does the protector layer create a noticeable gap between the pencil tip and the screen?
Thanks for the very useful review! A tough (maybe irrational) I have is: are these protectors easy to take off? Do they leave traces of adhesive that maybe need to be cleaned off? I’m a little concerned (again, probably over-worrying) about damaging the original coating of the iPad’s screen.
I just installed the icarez protecter and it has serious wobble, to an insane degree when using a ruler. I think that even the thin film is enough to cause it.
Hi Brad! Great video. Super helpful. I was really hoping you could suggest if should really get a screen protector at all or leave the iPad pro as it is for the best drawing experience? Your reply would read help me figure things out! Thanks! 😊
Oh, I found your video after watching one on Paperlike. I wanted to see if the. Matte protectors were as good. I’m not sure yet though. I may have to order Paperlike.
Brad your review was excellent. I appreciated your comments on the glass and the matte, however I have been recommended to get a matte glass protector and since they are extremely expensive I wanted some extra input to know if they are worth the cost to make drawing more like paper and pencil? I notice this review was done two years ago so I'm wondering if you have tried out the glass matte protector yet?
@Brad Colbow great review. Thank you for this. May I ask if iCarez antiglare screen protector leaves residue when you remove it? Also, you should check out Photodon's antiglare screen protector. I use it for my Cintiq Companion and it's really great. I will check out the iCarez first, but was curious about the residue. Thank you!
Once you got the iCarez lined up did you just drop it on or did you work it on with a squeegie? I used Paperfeel and had a lot of air bubbles. I am pretty sure these are the same protector with a different name. Thanks
Hi there! Will you do a review for the new 2018 iPad Pro as well? I am desperately trying to figure out what screen protector to buy, that doesn’t compromise the functionality of the Apple Pencil. Also, I would need it to have UV protection, as I have a weird eye condition and have to wear sunshades otherwise :) Any tips?
So should i get a matte screen protector even though my ipad wont be fully for drawing i will use it regularly like a phone (+im still a beginner in digital art) so is it worth it to get a matte screen protector although it will reduce the quality 🤔 And is it really hard to draw on the original screen?
Thanks for this. Have you found a glass screen protector that does not have the problem with the wavy lines? PS: you have a type o ..... "COARSE for $10 instead of Course.
I had one of those iCAREz on and it made this squeaky sound when I draw! It gave me the hibby-gibbies and I had to take it off after 1 hour. Are you not bothered or does it not make the noise for you?
I got the supershieldz, but after 30 minutes the noisiness and rainbow effect creates eye strain and watery-eye on me. Do you have any other recommendation for a none-rainbow matte screen protector?
Nice reviews! Yesterday I ordered the Tech armor protector based on reviews from a different reviewer video. It would be great if Apple offered a matte/toothy screen version with the fourth coming iPad Pro.
Hi Brad. Probably some one could have ask this , would a matte screen protector wear off the nib of Apple Pencil in long term since you have been using it for suit some times .
I bought the Matte iCarez, but the graininess is super annoying. @Brad, are you still using today? Also, does the matte protector effect how your tutorials look on video?
Yeah, i'm still using it. I took it off to do a stylus review and after a couple weeks I couldn't stand just the glass so I put another one on. And yes, it's easier for me to film my iPad because there is less reflection on the glass.
Brad Colbow awesome! Thank you for sharing. it took a day but I'm getting used to it. I also notice that my iPad feels like it has more of a purpose now as a drawing machine rather than as a do everything device. (which I like)
Great video, screen resistance is my only concern holding me back from getting the iPad Pro. If a matte screen isn't quite 'there' yet, surely there'll be one on the market for illustrator led in the near future.
Hey Brad, I have a question regarding the new surface pro 2017. Is it worth it to get a matte screen protector for so that when you draw it has more tooth to it. Or you don't need it at all because it might cause some jitter with the stroke?
Hi! Thanks for the video, I found it very useful!, I have a question, other than for the "feel" on the screen, do you consider necessary a screen protector when using the Apple Pencil? (To prevent scratches or wear to the screen?) thank you!
Yeah unfortunately when using an anti-glare matte protector you do get that little bit of a rainbow effect, but that's something you're going to get with all anti-glare matte screen protectors. I guess you just have to decide if the more "paper-like feel", is a better pay off when it comes to drawing, than not having the rainbow effect. Personally I've kind of gotten used to it and would rather have the extra tooth for drawing. That's just me though.
+Kevin B Yeah, time will tell if it bothers me long term. So far so good. I really like the feel of drawing on them so it might win out. Also, it's easier to film my iPad screen with the anti-glare screen on.
Thanks for all the information. Great job! Have you tried the iPad pro 2017 and if so any special comments on screen protectors? Also - Please do a video for removing screen protectors?
Why am I even here....its 4 years ago....but wont lie not much has changed with screen protectors since you posted this. Everyones going crazy about Paper textured protectors but I'm used to drawing on my phones glass screen, plus I'm not at all keen on matte.
Hopefully a person would realize that if you have used the wet wipe and a dry wipe is provided that the next obvious step would be to use the dry wipe considering the screen is then wet. Going specifically by the instructions I can see where it would be an issue though. I rarely read them because most of the time they aren’t accurate and I feel like a lot of people mess up because of directions.
Has anyone using a matte screen protector noticed the nib of their apple pencil wearing out unusually fast? I have a PaperLike screen protector on my iPad and I'm running through Apple Pencil nibs in a matter of weeks. I don't put a lot of pressure on the screen when I draw, so I know that's not the issue. Is there a matte protector that won't wear the nibs out at lightning speed?
Hi Brad. Just got an Ipad Pro and loving it for drawing. The wife insisted I got an Otterbox case (we have kids) and as it has a plastic screen protector. I can feel a slight difference in some places. Did you ever try that one? thanks! Keep up the great videos. We are big fans
Great video. How does the "tooth" of the iPad with matte protector compare to a Wacom intuos? Mostly similar or just barely enough to get rid of the smooth glass surface?
Thanks for doing the leg work on this! I was wondering if going with something like that would help. Think I might hold off for now, give you some time to test it out longer.
Sorry to revive a zombie thread, but what did you ultimately decide on the use of the matte screen protectors? I just put an iCarez on my new 2018 iPad today, and while I like the feel, I hate the loss of resolution and worse the gazillion little colored specks (reminds me of color noise in photos). Any updated suggestions? Sorry if I missed a video update you have already done. Thanks! :)
Carol Teater Would you recommend the use of any matte screen protectors for a soon-to-be college student who would usually work on the iPad 2018 for note-taking and a little bit of drawing on the side?
Bought Tech Armor before I saw this video... Like it feel with pencil, but disappointed with noise on whites. So is the iCarez better with this? Sry if i missed it in video.
Yeah, I hear ya. I took the screen protector off after about a month and then a week later I put one back on. I decided that having the feel was more important than the colors.
Brad Colbow do you use it strictly for illustration? Mine is basically my computer since I have the keyboard so I also use it for school works too. Or entertainments like Netflix RUclips and social networking. So the display quality is a pretty big deal. I ordered the screen protector right after watching your video, and I slapped it on once i got it. I have to say i love the feel so much when i am illustrating but the quality is...................... like expected. Nice video btw!
Peter FFyOU So after 5 months since this comment have you changed your mind? I’m about to buy an iPad Pro and I don’t know if I should install the iCarez matte or not...
The grain really bugs me, but it's only super noticeable on white backgrounds. So, I set the color of my canvas to a grey or tan when I sketch, and set all my apps, that have the option, to dark mode.
Anyone try drawing with a Zagg screen protector? Not the glass one. I have one for my iPhone and it's literally the best protector I've ever used. Crystal clear viewing, smooth, and self healing. Lasted me over a year and half until I took it off. It seems thin on my iPhone but I'm curious if it's slight "rubber" feeling texture might mess with the Apple Pencils accuracy. Any tips?
Great Video! thx! ipad pro user. My fingers are tingling from touching the screen to zoom. I was thinking screen protector might help with that. Has anyone experienced this problem or solution
But did I get it right, that there's no protector, thats not matte but gives the pencil a better feeling? Cause I'm torn between having a better feeling or a better view!
so many things to consider while I save to buy an ipad pro.. I think my head will pop with all the pros and cons of this and that.. i test drove the apple pencil in the store today, and yes I think a little bit of tooth from a protector is fine. Now that there is the Luna display dongle coming out soon that allows direct screen pairing with a mac to access programs like corel painter etc.. I guess I could have the macbook on the table next to me to check to see how things look as I work on the ipad if i use a screen protector. I just wonder if the pixeled look will affect corel painter 2018 since you can get lots of textured and natural paint details with it. You should do a review on the Luna display once it's out and test it with photoshop and corel painter if you can . would be awesome. the kickstarter for the luna display is over but you should see if they will let you have one to review. Luna display is made by the Astropad people. I just need more information than just Procreate with the screen protector. My main go it is Corel Painter. I will be pre ordering the luna display dongle this week and wait for the next ipad pro to purchase that. Hopefull it will be out in the spring (my hope).
Just wondering why you even use a screen protector ? Aren’t all apples screens made with the toughest gorilla glass ever made ? Do you get those scribble line when you use your iPad with out a screen protector? Just courtesy why you feel a screen protector give you more control while using the I pencil and have you tried other stylus ? Thank You for the video. Jerry
Yeah, I just like the feel of drawing on something with a little bit of texture. I'm not worried about scratching the glass. I have tried other styluses, I'm not a fan, they just aren't quite accurate enough for what I'm trying to do.

The masking tap keeps the pressure steady so you can squeegee outwards and prevents rollups
why does this guy occasionally sound like kermit the frog when he is speaking
His "Protector" reminds me of David Spade's Barack Obama talking about Peanut Butter Cups.
Ahem ~cough cough~
I hate the way he says protector
He is my father
I'm never getting that out of my mind now lol. Kermit the frog has a cool voice though
I'm quite glad that I have a tempered glass screen protector on my iPad Pro 12.9, as I quite often slip when I'm drilling holes around my home and the iPad screen always threatens to get in the way, even if I'm nowhere near it. So now I can stop worrying.
Great video Brad. I enjoyed how your script was direct and to the point. I'll be on the lookout for more of your reviews.
the drill test should have been done on a protector when it was installed on a glass pane....it would have worked better...
running a drill bit over such a thin piece of material is misleading and unfair to the manufacturers claim
Jabulani Harvey yea but what abt the iPad?
Used the Icares protector matte finish and love it! Thank you for the video!
Thanks Brad! Your lighting looks great in this video too.
+misterfung Thanks. Glad you noticed. I tried a different position standing up. My backlight is usually almost directly above but in this position it's more behind me. I liked it too.
Kudos for this comprehensive review. It was really useful. Thanks a lot!
How about putting tape on the pen?
I have the super shields matte screen protector
It is really good for drawing ✍️ on my iPad Pro 10.5 inch
I love it
Is there a clear screen protector that won't wobble with the apple pencil??
(For the new ipad pro 2018)
have you found one?
Thans man. Great vid. Just one thought: I had a matte screen protector on my Surface pro 3 and that made my pen nib to wear off like lipstick (not that I know how lipstick wears off. I assume that lipstick wears off pretty fast). So how's the iPad pencil nib holding up against matte screen protectors?
+Brad Colbow Hello. It's been 4 weeks, how's the pencil?
It's in perfect condition. I did take the screen protector off last week to test another stylus so I only got 3 weeks with it on there but the Pencil hasn't shown any wearing down or anything.
Thanks for the video! Will order the Matte Screen ICarez.
Mike F did you get the super shields version? If so how is it? I just got the iclear but it's very grainy that I'm not sure I'll keep it
Mike F that's a shame.
Brad I brought ipad should I put screen protector or not. I am going for drawing but little worried about scratches. Help me?
I just got the icarez matt protector for my 12.9 ipad pro and don't have one on my smaller 9.7 ipad. What a difference when taking notes.
Thank you!
+tinktwiceman nope, that one came off clean
Once you got the iCarez lined up did you just drop it on or did you work it on with a squeegie? I used Paperfeel and had a lot of air bubbles. I am pretty sure these are the same protector with a different name. Thanks
After all this time did you find a better screen protector? Which one do you prefer?
Hey look, it’s you again. I just saw take one. I hope take two has some suggestions and no explaney hand stuff.
So should i get a matte screen protector even though my ipad wont be fully for drawing i will use it regularly like a phone (+im still a beginner in digital art) so is it worth it to get a matte screen protector although it will reduce the quality 🤔
And is it really hard to draw on the original screen?
completely off topic but I love your teeth
dats gay
@@cityuenglish5722 you te nice
Thanks bro, nice video. Did you try tempered glass for protection and the matte one over the tempered glass?
Thanks for this. Have you found a glass screen protector that does not have the problem with the wavy lines?
PS: you have a type o ..... "COARSE for $10 instead of Course.
Tried elecom for its extra texture that I like and the ESR for iPad Pro 2020. Elecom is my first choice but the ESR really surprised me.
Awesome videos overall, Brad. You rock!
(which I like)
has it retained its same feel? my friend got the "paper like" screen protector and the apple pencil kind of polished it smooth
Sorry if I missed this in any of your reviews, but have you ever used glass tempered? What are your thoughts? Thanks!
Great video, screen resistance is my only concern holding me back from getting the iPad Pro. If a matte screen isn't quite 'there' yet, surely there'll be one on the market for illustrator led in the near future.
My tempered glas is sliding too much on ipad pro, can I use a matte screen protector over the tempered glass?
Hey Brad,
I have a question regarding the new surface pro 2017.
+israel trujillo no, the screen is pretty tough, the pencil won't scratch it.
Thanks again!!
Have you ever tried the paperlike screen protector? How is the clarity you think after a couple of years with the icarez?
Why am I even here....its 4 years ago....but wont lie not much has changed with screen protectors since you posted this. Everyones going crazy about Paper textured protectors but I'm used to drawing on my phones glass screen, plus I'm not at all keen on matte.
Great vid!
What about writing or note taking? Do you still recommend iCarez?
Thx ;-) (nice drawing btw ;-)
The only reason I use screen protectors on all my devices is that I've got sweety hands😂
So... what screen protector should I buy for Ipad? (for drawing, of course)
i want to try the icarez. But how is it the icarez's surface/texture compared to paperlike ?
It's not as good as the feel of the Intuos texture, the screen protector isn't a rough, but it's much much better than not having one.
thanks for doing this review! I am looking to get an ipad pro and was curious if I should even get a screen protector
did you?
brad may I know what matte screen protector you used right now to draw on ipad?
Hi when i darw on my ipad pad line comes like shaky type so how can i resolve this issue
Thanks for your prompt replies, good vids keep up the good work and information on different products. Jerry
Thanks for doing the leg work on this! I was wondering if going with something like that would help. Think I might hold off for now, give you some time to test it out longer.
@Kyle DC, thanks man I did not know they made an anti glare protector without the rainbow effect. I'll have to look into those.
Does the iCarez wear down the top of the pencil? If so how much?
In retrospect. Still using the screen protector?
I took it off to review a stylus a couple months ago. Then just last week I put one back on because I missed it. So yeah, I'm a fan :)
is the film grain a pixel reflection or a texture of the matte screen protector? do you perhaps have a close up photo of it?
Alexey krio it's not
did you ever decide what screen protector to use?
This is so hard for me to chose, i have to. sacrifice the quality of pictures for a better illustrating experience
Love the honesty, thanks for the video
Hi I saw somewhere that the techarmor is more clear than the icarez screen. Is this true?
I suggest using the Zagg glass+ pro series of tempered glass screen protector
You can do the exact method on installing from the iCarez with the any other screen protectors. Tape.
Out of curiosity what was your final decision do you use a screen protector or not these days on the ipad pro?
Any tips?
Which is more clear? Icarez or tech armor matte finish?
Hopefull it will be out in the spring (my hope).
hey did you ever tried "
paperlike"?
