Logitech Crayon for the iPad Review

  • I've had my eye on one of these since it was announced earlier this year along with the new iPads. It's limited, it's designed for the education market so it doesn't to as much as the apple pencil. The big difference is the lack of pressure sensitivity.

I wanted to update on the Logitech Crayon as someone who just got it for their iPad:
It's really nice to use, and for note taking and sketching/doodles (this is great as a designer as pressure sensitivity isn't as needed).
This pen also works on multiple devices now! (I have an iPad gen 7).
Overall, this is great for those who need a good stylus and do not drastically need pen pressure sensitivity.

The way you say “cray-in” or “crayn” is killing me! Maybe it’s me I always thought the word was pronounced “cray-on”. Kind of like “stay on” course. Any who loved the video I wish it did work on the iPad Pro devices .That’s definitely a dealbreaker. Love your videos.

    • @thebradcolbow

  • @skm6777

I actually use the Crayon as my primary inker, cause I'm not as steady with applying pressure even after all this time. In Affinity Designer, I just use a specific inking brush type that has varying width, duplicated it a number of times, set them to the different stroke widths that I use, and select the size I want as I go. Found myself far more efficient at inking and it's far more comfortable to hold for a long period of time.
And why does it seem like I'm the only person in the world who NEVER considered charging my Apple Pencil 1 using the iPad's charging port?
Oh, and one more thing to add: The Crayon now works with just about every iPad that uses an Apple Pencil, so when I accidentally promised my aut son that he could have my iPad Air 3 - which uses the AP1 and you cannot go back on anything you've said to an autistic - the Crayon will work with the refurbed Air 4 I have ordered, meaning I'm in no rush and can wait until the Apple Pencil 2 goes on sale before getting it.

    • @skm6777
      @skm6777 3 года назад

Okay, in reply to my own comment, the day after I posted it, the AP2 went on sale for about US$105 on Woot, so I got it. I then sanded off the smoothness and painted it black. It still worked - it could still charge and draw - but the paint wouldn't stick, so I wiped it off so now it just looks kind of sketchy, like someone's chewed on it. (I'm going to try RIT dye next.)
But this has given the AP2 just enough extra texture that, along with its smaller size & balance, it is FAR more comfortable than the AP1, or even the Crayon.
Everyone talks about the new way to charge is the great thing about the AP2, but it's actually HOLDING this pencil that I find so incredible. I actually draw with more confidence.
I still leave pressure turned off, though.

Really great review Brad, thank you .... I just bought one today (UK) ... I use my iPad predominantly for note-taking and line drawing ... I hated the apple pencil, horrid to hold, bad weight balance, smooth and non grippy and that noisy tippity tap, like a dog on a laminate floor, on the screen ... I lurrrrrrrrve the Crayon - the carpenter's pencil shape is fabulous for long stints of writing - lack of pressure sensitivity not a thing for me (I can still use the pencil if I want to do some serious drawing) but all in all a way more pleasurable experience. I am a long time Samsung S3 and S-Pen user - and this reminded me of the S-Pen a little more ... the Crayon was designed with students in mind, so more a writing than drawing instrument, so it ticks all the boxes for me ...

  • @KanadeChizuru
    @KanadeChizuru 6 лет назад +1

Both of you would make for an epic father-daughter team! Also, what the heck's a Cran?? (jk)
That aside, Logitech Crayon is not too bad for the purpose it serves. However, it seems like we're going to have to wait for a very long time before a suitable (and perhaps...better) alternative to the Apple Pencil pops up. I'm now reminded of the old "Intuos Creative Stylus" that Wacom did a few years back, and I'm just wondering if they'll do it again, this time as a competitor for the Apple Pencil. Probably expensive af (knowing Wacom) and it would follow the default form factor their styluses have. As much as I love the Apple Pencil, it's a bit too long and heavy for me, and I think it'd be cool if there were shortcut buttons on it (for undo/redo, brush size change and that kind of stuff)
On the other hand, there's that upcoming iPad Pro model that we're all waiting for this year (or the next). I've read speculations that there will be a new version of the Apple Pencil coming along with it, but sadly those are just rumors (unless some good folks here can link me to official annoucements).

for the 20 to 30 bucks ya save, it isnt worth it. sure it might be nice for schools for notes but besides that long term your better off buying the pencil. even if just for notes id still suggest the pencil cuz say if ya use another ipad that isnt the 2018 ipad then you dont gotta buy another pencil and just use the one ya got.
and if ya really wanna save money then ya prob could just get any old 2-5 buck stylus if ya really want something to do notes with.
prob could find something round 20 if ya want more accuracy or something

I just don't think this makes sense for the price. It retails for only $20 - $30 less than the Apple Pencil (about 25% cheaper). Even if you're not an illustrator it seems like having the option for pressure sensitivity is worth spending a few more bucks. If all you need is to take notes then it seems there are much more affordable options available. This would make a lot more sense if it was $40 or $50 instead of $70.

@Brad, wasn't sure where or how to contact you. I have realized, by making a google search, that when just looking for "cintiq alternatives" it immediately jumps as one of the first results (no surprise here) one of your pages. But is a very old one, old opinions, old models, and way less cute site design. Seems you have this page yet there to not loose those entries from google, which is totally clever. Still... I would use some sort of redirection. One not loosing the SEO juice. Been a while since I worked in SEO as part of my duties, but I believe in your domain or hosting company, maybe in .htaccess file, or maybe in some modern feature of your hosting's cpanel, you could set a 302 redirection, to keep the seo juice, and get those people reaching the old and so well google ranked page to be automatically redirected to the new page, which you also have, with current articles and current stuff and design.
The old page is exactly this one :
    bradcolbow.com/reviews/wacom-cintiq-alternatives/
huh....wait a minute.... is the SAME than the new one....
    bradcolbow.com/reviews/wacom-cintiq-alternatives/
Maybe sth going wrong in your redirections when accessed from the site than just coming from google ?
Maybe the content is similar... but the design is really much nicer in that orange-ish yellow (not due to the color, but because is imo better designed (from a fellow designer ;) ))
    Cheers,

Personally I wouldn't let the kid to bring his iPad to school, some things should stay traditional as long as possible, like note taking. And even so, I'd rather buy a Pencil rubber protector, which won't cause the stylus to roll over the edge or loose the cap. Cheaper that way xd

Wait it doesn't have pressure sensitivity, what kind of stylus doesn't have that.

    Great video!
If I may wear my tin-foil conspiracy hat for a second... I think the tech to allow the Crayon to work without pairing is inside of the 2018 iPad (which is technically the newest manufactured model)- much like any recent Galaxy Note phone & the clickable S-Pens. So, I'm thinking Apple is gonna include this pair-free tech inside the upcoming 2018 iPad Pros. They could also reveal an Apple Pencil 2? It could totally work in the same pair-free way, but unlike the Crayon, actually include pressure sensitivity! For a likely higher price than the first Apple Pencil (especially because at $100 it would be too close to the Crayon). 🤔
Alright, I've done enough overthinking! Lol.

Well, giving that Surface pen doesn't need any syncing at all (you can't click the eraser button if you don't sync but you can just sync by using the pen right away) so it's probably a smart move for Apple to do something similar.

The Apple pencil doesn't work like the s-pens (Wacom EMR) nor other digitisers (N-trig or whatever Microsoft call it now, Synaptics, etc.). Most of the Apple pencil 'work' is done in the pencil itself, hence the need to pair and the relatively short battery life.
What may be happening here though is something like the W1 (or whatever the newest version is called) chip allowing for pairing with just one action, in this case pressing the power button. I believe this is done by the main device (iPad, etc.) always searching for accessories.

So... To wrap it up: If you need a stylus for art, get the Apple Pencil; if you need something to take notes, that's the one!?!?!?
