Biggest problem with 7/10 being the default for bad games to not offend sponsors, is that there are good games that legitimately score a 7/10 that get lumped in with them.

It's not that 7/10 is bad, it's that there are many 8, 9 or 10/10 games and not enough time to play them all. So why would I waste my time playing lower rated games.
And when I'm saying 8, 9, 10, I'm talking about my personal rating, can't trust game journalist sites that give 8 and 9 to CoD every year

to me 7/10 is averagely good if that makes sense. Like it was enjoyable, but nothing too special. Not Super memorable or wont be replaying it. 8s-9s or 10s have something really special to push them further up IMO either by very impctful and memorable story, or very fun repeatable gameplay, or unique mechanics etc. Does that make sense? lol I think its because all of us have that internal rating of 6/10 = passing grade because of school. Its quite hard to get away from that when the first 20-25 years of your life this idea has been present at all times.

Yo🤙 There's a top comment that suggests people not seeing 5 as average anymore. Having shared your opinion on what 7 subjectively equates to, I'd have to agree with you and them. It seems we've moved the bar higher now for what "average" should feel like. Which, of course, is okay seeing as having higher standards is good but it doesn't allow that which is average to be "averagely good", if that makes any sense.

@@storm1OGit’s the squeeze of people’s time combined with it being a PAID 5/10. 5/10 is the average, but you don’t want average when you spend money on something, you want it to outperform some random activity you could have done for free in entertainment quality. We can roughly entertain ourselves at a 5 without paying any money so it’s spitting in the customers face to offer 5 or less. This forced 6-10 or dogshit perspective is why f2p games are so good at attracting players. The scale gets widened substantially. If you’re curious you might even play a 3/10 game that costs you nothing to play.

I can hoard items in that game. I can shoot zombies until I ran out of ammo. I can build as much space of land as I want. I can level up ALL skills available in the game. I can collect cool and rare items. I can collect all types of cars. I can infinitely farm potatoes and make them bloom more. I can remove snow with snow shovels. I can bag a dead zombie corpse. I can throw molotovs everywhere I want and explode my generator accidentally. I can do all types of shit in that game.

@14:00 The reason we constanstly 'rank' things is because competition in an inherent part of the human experience. We recognize patterns and compete to form more understandable structures and hierarchies in order to navigate the world easier.
The real problem is that people are using the 10 scale incorrectly. It's supposed to be a normal distribution on the bell curve, with most games falling between 4 and 6. Instead, we've moved that to most games being between 6 and 8. There is a positive bias to reviews, and I think it's skewed how we view a 'good' or 'bad' game.

Shadow of War is worse because the character is extremely hard to control and due to double & tripple bindings it very often doesnt even do what you want.
    E.g.
    1. You want to run up a wall and dash jump to avoid arrows -> you have to hold spacebar to initiate the jump and then hammer spacebar to do the dashjumps. If you dont hold long enough, your character will just roll to the side and you might get meleed.
    2. You are hanging on an object and an enemy is above you. You want to press E to heal up and fill the blue bar. Sadly the game doesnt targetlock the NPC -> you drop down when pressing E too early completely killing the flow.
Another problem is the weird prio system. E.g. You have a finisher ready ( F ) and you run towards an enemy and press F. Sometimes the enemy just starts his attack slightly earlier damaging you, causing you to die.
The problem basicly is: The fighting system/character control is worse & extremely frustrating compared to Shadow of Mordor. And it sadly is the only thing you do in the game.
I Played shadow of Mordor like crazy ( 61/74 Achievements ) but quitted Shadow of War after 5h ( yes i fkn tried, but its just not fun ).

Game sites use a scoring system that is between 7 to 10. Rarely do games get any lower. Partly because they don't review games that would get lower scores, or because they're bad at reviewing and inflate scores.
When I find a game average, that's a 5/10. Neither good nor bad. Does some things fine, other things not. Right in the middle. When I give a 5/10, that's not a bad score. Anything below 5, the bad outweighs the good. Anything above 5, the good outweighs the bad. Very few games even deserve close to a 9, and no game deserves a 10. Meanwhile a lot of games deserve 0-3 scores.
Forspoken has a metacritic of 64, but it has a bunch of 9-10 scores that skew that score way higher than it should be. Forspoken is a 2 at the very most, but the rating system being worried about giving anything less than a 7 fucks it up. You can never tell when a game that gets any score is actually deserving of that score, because some numbers are so inflated, while other numbers are so deflated, and you don't know which is which until you play the game yourself.

And you say "I wouldn't give it a 0-2/10 like a lot of people do", but you need to understand a lot of people don't actually. Metacritic user scores are full of 0/10 or 10/10 no in between for so many games and is not reliable way of seeing what people think about games. The fact is that nobody with a functioning brain would ever review that game with a 0-2/10.
      Nobody.

That's basically all AAA games and popular indie games. The actual creative stuff is usually not very popular. But young folks or people with less game literacy don't realize this. They see the building mechanics in Tears of the Kingdom and think its innovative and cool. Whereas I know that those building mechanics are ripped from the entire genre of games like Besieged and Scrap Mechanic. (among many others). Doom 2016's push forwards gameplay and glory kills is basically straight up taken from Warhammer 40k Space Marine (2011)....which itself took those concepts form earlier titles. Monster Hunter World is super popular and loved despite it being the same game they've been releasing for over 15 years. And Monster Hunter Wilds will prolly be loved with the 20 year old gameplay style :D.

Thats sorta true but to be honest, a bunch of reviewers are totally pretentious.
I've watched a bunch of "10/10" classics, I've also watched a lot of shit you'd see in a DvD pile in a Walmart. What I've learned is that you simply cannot trust reviewers. Many of these reviews (especially on IMDB) always seem to look too deep into things, talking about whatever metaphorical or deep psychological aspect of a film and rating the film based off of that. An example of this I'd say are the Matrix films, with many reviewers praising the first film to high heavens but also despising the second and third films for not being as "deep". Lets face it, the Matrix has always been kind of dumb, but in a good way because I love all three of them.
Same thing can also be said about video games. Don't trust the reviews and try it out for yourself.

"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important." - john carmack
i find that for a lot of games, having the story be a bunch of quest markers in a trench coat is really all that you need, although this is obviously not universally true; rpgs are the quintessential example of a genre that requires a good story, because under the hood most of them are just the same dnd ruleset ported to a video game environment. nonetheless, it is generally true that good gameplay and bad story can make for a good game, while the inverse cannot. games are interactive by nature, and if interacting with a game isn't fun, the story would have been better off being told in a different medium.

    • @trevorveillette8415
      @trevorveillette8415 19 дней назад

@uzbekistanplaystaion4BIOScrek I'd actually argue against your claim that a game with bad gameplay but great story can't be a good game.
If a game can make me cry my eyes out with its story then to me it's a good game.
A good story is much more impactful than good gameplay. Good gameplay is only important while you're playing the game. But a good story sticks with you even when you aren't playing.
I think the best examples of this are all from 1 game director who is a bit infamous for forsaking gameplay as long as the story is good. Yoko taro, the creator of the NieR series and drakengard series.
All of his games until NieR:Automata were critically trashed for poor gameplay.
That was very true for his drakengard games and partially true for NieR gestalt.
But while those games didn't have a strong gameplay experience, their stories, characters and music were so unique and well crafted that they gained a cult following. 7 years after NieR gestalt the series was revitalized and brought more life than ever with the release of NieR:Automata.
Having played his games, I firmly believe a good story is far more important than good gameplay.
Good gameplay only applies to video games. Good story applies to any form of literature.
And while yoko taros games before NieR:Automata never had amazing gameplay, he did really capitalize on the gaming mediums unique aspects and made his games very "gamey". All kinds of different genres, camera angles, perspective changes (both literal and narrative) and an overall well done parody of the fantasy rpg genre.
So again, good gameplay is important of course, but story is more important (if your game is story driven) as it has the potential to impart an experience on the player that matters more than just simply being a fun time. Yoko taro actually mocked the idea that games are just distractions.
He believes they have potential to be something very important and impactful to players. In the end credits of NieR:Automata he asks the player "do you think games are just silly little things?". If you answer yes the credits roll like normal. If you answer no, the game let's you achieve the true ending and save the characters lives and erase your own save data as a sacrifice.

I always go to Steam Reviews, the people buying the game are the people who are LITERALLY invested in the game, the series and the genre. So if I'm thinking about buying an RTS game because I like RTS then it's highly likely that the people who leave the reviews also like RTS and have a better and broader context within the genre. Steam Reviews cater to Niche genre audiences better than Gaming Journalism does.

As someone who hasn’t played Starfield and loved Skyrim/Oblivion, Fallout 3 and NV, and tried Fallout 4, I can comfortably say Bethesda has a track record of consistently pushing out some of the worst first iterations ever (Fallout 76, ESO, 1.0 Skyrim, FO4, Starfield aren’t exceptions to this)
Even Skyrim 1.0 was borderline unplayable dogshit looking back and mods that fixed and made it actually playable are what made it 9-11/10. Same goes for FO3 and NV - what made them so DAMNED good was the moddability of the game.
ESO and FO4 they started the trend of “nah bro you can’t mod anymore, at least not without us monetizing it” which is where Bethesda’s track record imo just went down the shitter when every game started becoming a forever beta test (largely because modders are A BIG resource of proper beta testing since they literally change the code themselves to make QoL and optimizations way faster than the developers could, and FOR FREE).
With this context, it’s pretty easy to see that Starfield wasn’t going to be an exception because the current developers seem completely out of touch with what made their past games amazing; monetization of every damn thing just sealed the deal why nobody has faith in their products anymore.
Or that’s how I see it anyway; it’s why I haven’t even given Starfield a glance despite having hundreds of hours in Elite Dangerous and No Man’s Sky - if I hear Starfield is good sure I’ll try it but with how it’s been looking so far it’s a hard pass.

Getting back to my roots at proper RPGs (Icewind Dale, NWN, Temple of Elemental Evil etc.) got excited for gaming again. What i find really funny is das 7 is considered "bad" in the videogames world. its the ONLY media space where this is the case. for example.. a 7/10 on IMDB for a movie is considered a really great film. i dont get it..
About Stories and games.. Gameplay is always the most important, yes.. but i also love games that have a certain focus on story.
But i think there is a huge difference in good game stories and good movie stories. good movie stories mainly are focused around good writing.
I think in games(since its a more immersive medium) its more about emotional impact. the story doesnt have to be super well written or super creative.
best example is the Final Fantasy series. when you break down the FF7 story its not that super well written. it has some plotholes and in the remake its even really confusing and absurd.. BUT you connect with the story much more than you could with a similar story in a movie. in a game it feels much more personal to you. you connect with the characters much more and you are much more emotional involved. thats why these stories stick with you and are important to you in a game. its not comparable to a movie.
This is the reason why many Tripple A videogame stories(especially stuff like UBISOFT games) feel so bland. they try to write a "hollywood story" which just feels like a bad copy past.. but whats even worse, they mix it with boring uninteresting bland, sometimes woke characters with no own identity. they often try to make these characters "hip" or "cool" for the current Zeitgeist.. but they fail to give them a true personality that connects with people. do you still know ANY character from the game Watch Dogs: Legion? any character from AC Mirage? most far cry games?... they spin so much story but lack the emotional connection. in compare.. you will forever remember the story of FF7 because of characters like cloud, Tifa, Aerith. The yakuza series stories go so deep and hard because of characters like kiryu and Majima.. The persona series storie is SO character driven.... Geralt in the witchter.. Arthur in RDR2.. 2B,9S,A2 in Nier Automata.. Good videogame stories work so well not necessarily because of the writing.. but the emotional connection to the characters. and THATS what most gamestudios dont understand.

Personally "one" the best example if numbers Ruining a game is Alien isolation. The critics ruined it on release so much so that by the time proper reviewers got around to it the devs already isbanded due to a terrible release because the critics sent FPS players into a horror game and didn't like the Alien was unkillable.

The big AAA games have to be 10/10, otherwise the game news sites won't be able to cover the small budget and independent games, and those are often the most interesting ones.

The actual problem is that 7/10 is what should be 5/10, passable games that you won’t think too much about but are alright to play for a while.
We’re essentially only using a fraction of the scale.
It goes like this with game ratings:
    6/10 or lower = bad
    7/10 normal
    8/10 or higher = good
This rating ssstem is essentially useless, we should norm an okay experience at 5/10 so we can actually use more of the scale

I'm starting to realize I should probably go back to skipping cutscenes like I used to do as a kid, because some games are actually inherently better if you ignore the story completely and don't read anything ever.

You can't say critics are out of their mind and irrelevant because they don't consider other aspects of a game that many players do when I and many others DO happen to care about story, characters, and quality of game play. Come on, dude. You get on your high horse about a point and then miss your own point to do the same thing you accused the critics of doing. The fact is, if you read the damn review and not just the number then you get a good picture of if the game is for you or not regardless of the number. Honestly, just get rid of the numbers and everyone would stop crying about the critics. Find a couple reviewers that like what you like and follow them, enough said.

For most people i think, if a AAA game isnt a 10/10 it usually gets dropped to like a 5/10 just on principle

The truth is any rankings especially newer ones will have a higher score just because scoring companies will get paid generously to pass a high score game to a mediocre game to boost sales. Then you have people that rate stuff on steam and other platforms a 9 or 10 because they liked it a lot when they don't understand what makes a game that score. They don't have an understanding of what to compare their favorite game to an actual good game so scores will be the best judge of how a game is played. Does call of duty deserve to be ranked above a 7 or an 8... no absolutely not. But people that only play that game will rate it a 9 or 10/10.
You can compare this with other things like tv shows or anime. Does attack on titan or bleach deserve to be ranked higher than JJK or Vinland Saga? Absolutely not! When you have a small pool to pick from you give generous rankings when its okay to see 1 show/game/anime and go I had fun but it felt like it lacked a lot of things that would make it better for me to enjoy it...6/10. At the end of the day you just have to remember people are dumb and don't trust their opinion on a topic because it is their opinion (some people sell their opinions too).

I hate the fact that 7/10 is considered a bad score. Now it feels like "okay games" dont exist. Everything is either an absolute masterpiece or an absolute garbage in the eyes of the gaming community.

The real problem with 7/10 game is that a lot of them are 4 or 5s not 7s. Reviewers do not have the balls to properly rate games because they may not get review copies in the future. This gives real 7/10s a bad name.
