Great live version by Roy of “Sweet Mama Blue”. It was at a small northern U.K. club but he sang the song with true emotion as he would every time he had an audience. I believe “Lana” was a hit for Roy in the U.K. in the mid-60’s. Also the venue was not unlike the club where he performed in 1967 and met his future wife - Barbara.
Good old Roy, he made good music in the 1960s, and with the Travelin' Wilberries and George Harrison. On a tour, Roy once asked, "What's a Beatle, anyway?" and John Lennon tapped him on the shoulder and said "I am". Roy then did 14 encores 😉
Note that this was not a real working mans/social club but a studio set, this being a program made by Granada TV in their main studios. So yes whilst not the most prestigious of venues it was still a TV program made by a major UK franchise holder.
Tell you what, This is such a sweet song i love it. It's so rear to, he didn't sing it very often in fact this might be the only footage of Roy singing it. First time i heard it all the way through i have a few seconds of it in a Documentary, And iv'e Always wanted to hear it all the way through, Thankyou For Posting this Beautiful Song. This is the 5th time iv'e watched this im'e trying to learn it so i can play it on my Keyboard, And Mabe even sing it.
I believe they are called The Art Movement, a small group from 1968 that Roy recorded the album The Big O from 1970 with, and which he would have as a backing band from 1969 until around 1976. They're the same group from the popular 1972 Australia concert on YT
If Elvis says you can sing you can sing ! Dont make stars like this any longer proper singer and entertainer like his friend the pelvis both irreplaceable singers
Ay up we are from oop North and we are stupid. Look at them clapping their hands out of synch not really understanding the true significance of what they were witnessing. But hey they are from oop North. Roy is a legend. Wheeltappers was a silly show and how on earth did they get Roy to appear.
I think despite a great performance, he deserved far better than the sludge that was the Wheel tappers and shunters club! This is where acts came to die a horrible death! The saving grace of course is that he ended his career and life on a high in the association with his peers in the Traveling Wilbuys! Seeing him on this garbage was an insult at best!!!!
@@katr8756 I know, and it’s a testament to his commitment to keep on working wherever, it just wasn’t the kind of venue that I believe was befitting to someone of his talent! That said even the Bee Gees at a low point in their career around the early to mid seventies were playing at the Batley Variety Club, which was a kind of a slightly upscale working mans club where the audience consisted of drunk men and their slappers!
@@Tawny6702Agree! But they sure had a lot of cameras in that small place. So I'm thinking this was televised to a much larger audience. He wasn't playing to just a small club full of drunks. Roy toured all the time. Many mounths out ofvthe year. And sometimes the tours took him to small audiences. It's just the way the fickle music business was.
@@katr8756 yes it was on UK TV during the seventies, it was set in a fictional working men’s club which is what they are or were called, with a live audience! On this one it was obviously set in the north of England! I Working men’s clubs ( the real ones) means just that, usually located on or near big council estates (government housing) that offered cheaper beer and a variety of acts….some quite good, but often very bad. Sorry for this long explanation, but I’m not sure if you are British or not. So yes and because it was fictional and made for TV then Roy probably got a fairly handsome paycheck. It’s just that hearing that Colin Crompton who played the speaker of the club grinds my gears a bit. Also….and again in my opinion, the other acts that were on that show weren’t fit to be in the same room as Roy Orbison.
@@Tawny6702 Understand and agree. I'm in the US. ... I grew up hearing Roy's songs, and had his greatest hits albums. But I didn't appreciate Roy as much as I should have then. I came across Only The Lonely on utube recently and was just blown away at how awesome Roy's voice was. When you don't hear something for awhile and then run across it, you realize just how awesome he was, and what you've been missing. And he was such a kind, sweet soul on top of that. I really love the guy!! His voice and music are unforgettable!! Thanks for the conversation about Roy. See ya!
Not many of the audience appear to realize that they are in the presence of greatness!
Odd eh? And he'd been around and in the charts for a good ten years by the time he did that gig.
Roy is absolutely amazing 😍

what a 'joy' to hear such an amazing singer as Roy Orbison
FANTASTIC PEFORMANCE WORLD CLASS.

A live album containing the lesser-known singles like "Sweet Mama Blue", "Blue Rain" and "God Love You" is long overdue!!!
wow legend
These were in black and white when I first saw and heard these songs
great times

outstanding

Can’t believe they cut away from Pretty Woman!
Where did all your videos go? I absolutely loved all the Orbison content!
They are all being uploaded.
I’ll explain in another video what happened.

Unsurpassed still..
That was quite a catch for that club. Or was it just a club for TV.
Anyone know the name of the backing band and their names ???

Roy's better than elvis by miles in my honest opinion. 😊

Roy said he'd go anywhere to sing. The smallest club, to the biggest auditorium.
