Woodturning Olive Hat

- After a few months of not being able to spend time in the shop, I took a day off and took my time. 8 hours of work (including breaks and a lot of sanding) I managed to make this Olive hat, suitable for children under 5... Next time I hope to have a larger piece for a full size hat.

Yuval when I was younger and hats were in fashion I loved to wear hats. So youngman I would have wore this hat with pride it is stunning and awesome. The wood and the grain is breathtakingly beautiful.
I still wear a hat, every day, I have a few fedoras and a few baseball hats and I use then as weather and style permits me :)
Yuval
Great to see you back at it! Awesome hat. Well done taking something that wasn't working how you originally wanted and transform it into something stunning
Thanks Chris! If it will turn, we're gonna use it, that is my moto.
Yuval
Nice to see you back, Yuval. That is an amazing piece of Olive and you did a beautiful job of turning it.
Thank you Gord! I wish I could get some large pieces to you so you could work your magic on them!
Yuval
I love the birds singing in your backyard
Thank you! I like those as well!! :)
Yuval
That's a real good looking hat, Yuval. The Olive is stunning. Now, all you need is to find a head that fits it.
Thanks Mark!! Don't say that, it will give my wife terrible ideas...!!
Yuval
Welcome back Yuval,gorgeous hat mate!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Alan! It's good to be back!
Yuval
A great save buddy, such beautiful grain. See you next week. 👊👊👊
Thanks!! I'll see at the bar!! :)
Yuval
Thank you Yuval a good save from bowl to hat, gotta love the olive tree. Cheers mate 🇦🇺.......
Thanks Roger, that was indeed a nice piece of Olive right there.
Yuval
aw man! I wish there was his type of music in the background 😊
Probably had some copyright issues. If anyone accuses you of a copyright violation, RUclips make you prove it isn't copyrighted, not them. Been there, done that.
naw hes trying to be more appealing to new veiwers
I have a few reasons for not adding music to this video. I wanted it to be more instructional and less entertaining, I'm a teacher first, entertainer second. Also I have a very good friend who's a wood turner and he's also blind. He would enjoy this video, cutting Olive, by sounds more then some musical tracks. But I'm not done with more entertaining videos, they will return.
Yuval,
Beautiful work my friend. Glad to see you back on RUclips. Take care now.
✌️,
Jeremy
Thank you buddy!! It's been so long since we talked! How is the family been doing?!
Yuval
Great hat , nice to see you back. Good job 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you Tomas! It's good to be back (or have time to turn at all....).
Yuval
Such a lite touch and patient tool control
Thank you Gary! I think I heard my wife say that once as well, many years ago!! :)
Welcome back Yuval, really nice piece, and always good practise for the major event. Looks like there is a little Fiddle Back Grain in it.
Thanks Dieman! Needed a good warm up :) If I do find a large enough piece of Olive for a violin I might got for it...
Yuval
Nice having you back Yuval
It's nice to be back!
Yuval
Nice to see you able to post again!
Thanks!! It's not posting that I could do, it's actually finding the time to turn...
Yuval
Nice to see you back Yuval. Beautiful piece indeed sir
Thanks Mark!! It's been a while :)
Yuval
Great wood turning and beautiful Olive wood !
Thank you Richard!
Yuval
Welcome back, Yuval! I was beginning to worry about you. Great looking hat, of course, Olive wood looks good no matter what but you made it look even better! Great job!
Phil
Never fear, it's only work and life that keeps me busy, nothing important, I do promise to try and be more at the shop.
Mighty glad to see you in action again. Hope you and yours are well sir. You continually amaze me with the objects you create,,, well done !
Thanks buddy! I hope to find more time soon to try again!
Yuval
Hi Yuval, it’s been a long time but well worth the wait. The hat is really stunning and it’s been a pleasure to see you back at your lathe creating yet another beautiful piece.
Regards from the U.K.
Geof
Thank you Geof!! I know it's been a while but it's just life. I hope I'll have more time to turn with somehow trying not cut down on work... turning (still) doesn't pay the bills...
Yuval
nice to see you back bud awesome just awesome
Thank you Peter!! Did you notice I used your tool a few times? When you do, does it make you feel like a proud dad?? :)
Yuval
Absolutely beautiful my friend! I’ve seen many wooden hats, I think this one is the most beautiful. But then Olive is truly “Gods Wood”.
Thanks buddy! That piece really gave it all up, that was and still is a marvel of nature.
Yuval
Looks great, glad see you back at it!
Thanks!! I'm quite glad to be back at it myself... :)
Yuval
Beautiful work!
Thank you Heidrun!
Yuval
Great to see you back making videos. The hat is amazing.
Thank Gary, it feels good to be making some shavings again!
Yuval
What a great save Yuval and what a great looking hat well done
Thank you Graham!!
Yuval
Hello Yuval, It was worth waiting for. A lovely piece. In the end, a hat turned out to be a really good idea, as the surface area and shape show off the colours and grain perfectly. More hats, more hats, more hats . . . . Regards, Glenn. :-)
Thanks Glenn!! There's so much creativity someone can put into a turned hat, so I'm not sure my hat turning future will pick up, but I'll think of some new things to try out next :)
Great to see you back at your lathe Yuval, a beautiful outcome with that fantastic olive wood.
Thank you William, it's good to be back and teaching again!
Yuval
Great looking olive hat Yuval! Thank you for sharing the video with us.👌😎👍JP

Yuval
Been so long since your last video I thought you joined the Army or something. i hope you are back in the saddle. Thanks and take care, Larry
Ehehe, didn't join the army (again, I did my 4+5 years in service). I've been busy with work and with life :)
Yuval
very nice hat infact it is stunning yuval and welcome back to the lathe buddy
Thank Ian! It feels good to have a workout every once in a while...
Yuval
Great video mate glad to see your back on the lathe
Thanks buddy, and I only had one catch, and since it was in the middle of hollowing it didn't make it into the video!! :)
Yuval
Nice to see you back mate its been a few months excellent project i look forward to seeing you at makers central
Thanks Phill! I wish I could say I have more time now to turn, but I don't. I took a special off day to make this one. But at the event you'll better be sure I'll be turning!!

Thanks Guru!! Please do come and find me and introduce yourself! I'll be either in Stephen Gibson booth (I'll be turning there, and I also have a one hour demo at Record Power booth) or if I'm done turning for the day you'll find me either at the bar, or outside heaving a smoke :)
Yuval

Thank you Yuri!
Yuval
Awesome buddy!
Thanks man! Can't wait to see you again!
Yuval
@@yuvallahav same buddy!
wow
תודה דניאל!

That's awesome, Yuval! I love Olive wood but we don't have much availablity (at any reasonable price) for it here in North Georgia (USA).
Thanks buddy!! I wish I could share my Olive but shipping would just make it un doable...
Yuval
@@yuvallahav I know, I thought about offering to trade some Flame Box Elder or something you don't have access to but had the same realization: Shipping. lol
Beautiful wood. Is Olive easy to find for turning in Italy? Great to see you turning again.
Thank you Joe. Olive, in central Italy, is more like a weed, it's all around us, I literature find most of my Olive wood walking around picking up large branches that have fallen off windy days, or driving around the fields around my town looking to see if some one has been cutting or trimming their Olive wood (they use them as plot dividers) and I ask to take some.
Yuval
Fill the cracks with epoxy resin....and refinish, it’ll look cool...
I'm too lazy for epoxy... all that mixing... :)
Yuval
Nice video, Yuval.
Not bad the hat, which looks very nice.
Smile, probably the one with the right head.
:-)
And when do you make a hat for yourself?
Thanks Gunter!
As soon as I find a large enough piece, I'll be making a hat for myself.
Yuval
Smile, I wish you a lot of fun.
:-)
What was the saying 'Time will tell'. ;-)
very nice ;)
Thanks!!
Yuval
You didn’t include the section where you tried it on? 😁 Great piece buddy.
I would have, but I didn't want to be the joke of RUclips town...
Yuval
Yeah, RUclips Town is sketchy
How heavy is this hat? If it's not too heavy, I might wear it in the sun.Good job.😊
It's actually very light, it weighs about 350 grams, it's very thin.
Yuval
So einen Brauch ich auch
Thank you James!
Yuval
Wonderful. Why not make a local "makers central" in IL?
I wish I could, but work keeps my too busy turning, you think an event planing will be easier then going to the back yard to turn??! :)
Also, I live in Italy and not Israel, these days..
Yuval
@@yuvallahav hi. I don't think its an easy task at all but it is a well worth one...
@@Smallathe It sure is. Some day, it will happen. And we might even to be able to fly in some famose faces...
good video my friend, and thanks to your help with my camera problem my new calabash pipe video will be available soon, so keep your eyes on my channel and press the alarm bell icon to be notified of it`s arrival.
Your channel is marked with a bell always my friend, but the same reason I'm not making any videos these days is the same reason I don't watch or comment on videos, I just don't have the time and the mental mood for it. I have more then 500 videos in my inbox waiting to be seen (which I probably never watch unless I'll break a leg or something...)
Yuval
Boss: that's not what I meant when I asked you to wear a hard hat....
Eheheh, yeah... I'm not sure how much protection it can even give me, but damn, I'll look Olive pretty when my head smashed to bits from lack of correct safety gear... ;)
Yuval
@@yuvallahav Did you know that you can buy legit hard hats that are shaped like cowboy hats? It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thumbnail lol
Someday I'll have me one of those... :)
Yuval
The wood is sublimely beautiful, but the piece just seems like a lame little joke -- a wooden hat, ha ha. 😐
So a waste of beautiful wood, in my opinion (which you are welcome to ignore, of course).
You know what Karl Bunker, maybe, you should try keeping your opinion to yourself. Especially, when calling another persons' work a joke. You're the joke, if all you think that this was a waste of wood. To use wood for purposes, other then burning it in a fire, is NOT a waste of wood. And that's where this piece of wood was destined for, the fireplace.
Not a joke at all. I don't work for anyone, this is my hobby. I had a large cracked piece of wood, and I didn't turn for the past 4 months and needed a practice piece to get my sea legs back again, so I choose a hat. Something I've been wanting to try and turn for it's technical difficulty. It was a pleasure working and producing this piece and I learned a lot, I even used a few carbide hollowing tools I've never used before. So it's all good.
