How are voice and emotions connected? If you are dealing with throat tension when speaking or if you have been diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia, consider your thoughts and emotions and how they affect your voice. You can be doing vocal tension release exercises to reduce vocal tension but if you are not looking at your relationship with your voice, you may be missing a big piece to the puzzle. You may be able to relieve vocal tension by some vocal tension exercises but the tension may develop again if you are constantly worried about your voice. Vocal strain, vocal tension dysphonia or vocal cord tension are multi-factorial and doing just one thing usually does not lead to long-lasting changes. Learn about throat tension healthy vocal technique and how my clients are able to overcome this part of the hurdle.

Have you had a videostroboscopy and laryngeal examination by an ENT? That is the very first step in addressing vocal issues, especially vocal pain.

Vocal exercise do work, but it's most important to find the voice exercise that work on an individual level and not follow mandated routines by a voice teacher. It sounds like the guy in your story was just speaking at an inappropriate pitch and tone level for his larynx

    • @healthyvoicetips

I agree that each person needs an individualized plan, therefore there are no "mandated" routines. MTD (muscle tension dysphonia) is more complicated than just inappropriate pitch and tone. This particular client had both of those within limits for his age and gender.

@@healthyvoicetips Maybe if there's a neurological disorder or other aspect I'm unaware of, I'm mistaken on the issue, but often times people are just talking wrong because they don't understand the proper mechanics of the voice. I think actually Parkinsons (a neurological disorder) can respond positively at least some of the time to proper voice training. I won't say it's necessarily easy to change entrenched vocal habits (it can be very difficult for some), but it can be done, and it would seem "muscle memory" will take over eventually to the point where you don't have to consciously work on your voice as much
