  • Instead of giving citations to homeless people for panhandling, Albuquerque passed a new initiative that allows them to earn money for jobs in the city.
For more videos that care: u.pw/1rPmbv2
The city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, wanted to do something about the panhandling in their city. The "A Better Way" program at St. Martin's gives people who are panhandling an opportunity to work for a day, be paid for a day, and get support services.

I am a very conservative Republican that voted for Trump, Romney and Bush and I think this is an excellent use of government resources. It's about a hand up not a hand out. I live in Tulsa and I'm going to call my mayor's office tomorrow to suggest we do this with our homeless. Get them working and that act will become a habit. If you get in a habit of working then eventually you'll get your shit together. Good for them.

  • @mickdavis2385

I am all for this if the people actually want to work. Where I live the pan handlers openly admit they can make more begging in 1 hour than they will working 8 at a min wage job. I'm not sure how I feel about it. And I'm not sure if I blame them. But I do know I will never give them a penny of the money I worked hard for.

It’s not just mental help it’s physical disabilities too. I mean I’ve had four major spinal fusions and I have more hardware in my body than Home Depot does. And if not for my wife working I would be screwed because my disability income wouldn’t carry me in the world today.
There are days when I feel like I could do some work and then there are days where I want to jump off of a building and end the pain. So it would be nice if they had programs like this for everybody that was in a situation that couldn’t work full-time. I think what they’re doing is absolutely stellar.

It's a days work and gets them to an office where they can maybe apply for support programs and a help up.

Not a new concept, in Mexico has been doing this for years. For instance: They have 50 garbage trucks in my city. The city has one employee assigned to drive the truck and he hires any transits he wants to do the job of collecting the actual trash and putting it the truck. There is a standard fee that evereyone knows they will get paid at days end.

Ok, I need surgery for a hernia. A great program is paying for my procedure and it's scheduled for Dec 12th. I had money saved but I was injured 2 months ago and used almost all my savings paying rent and bills, now I have enough money left to pay rent for December maybe. I have no money for bills or gas, that is it rent then money is gone. That being said I have applied for at least 12 jobs and nobody will hire me until I have surgery done and recovered. So about 10 weeks from now I can get employment again... What am I supposed to do? There is no help out there financially I have tried. I'm in a bad situation.
