Turn An Old Riding Mower Into An ATV? Yup, The MUTT-2 Is Doing Great After It's First Season.

- This was last winter's project. I took a fairly well beat up Murray Widebody LT and converted it into a "Poorman's ATV". This is the 3rd time I've done this trick, and I think I've pretty well figured it out. With some love and creativity, these things can be made for cheap!
The main cost of a conversion like this is always going to be the tires. But now that I have invested in some, I can just swap them over to the next ride I make when this little tractor finally dies.
If money is tight, and you have the skills, A mower conversion like this is certainly worth the effort! I love mine for both work and play.

I've been keeping an eye out for a cheap tractor for a while now to make my own MUTT - I need something like this for gathering firewood from the back 40. Anyway, I saw one on the side of the road for free a couple of moths ago while I was coming back from the store. When I got home, I immediately hooked up my trailer and went back to get it only to find someone else was already there loading it up. Missed my opportunity by 5 minutes...oh well. I'll find one eventually.
If you go by a place with several sitting around. Just stop in and ask if theyd sell them for scrap. Chances are they'll give em to you.
I ha e a Troybilt body , just needs a motor if you want it
I've got several of those mowers out in the shed. Might have to convert one or two. Thanks for the video 👍
Actually, thought of this this a month or so ago, found a good riding lawnmower and needed direction to turn it into a working horse for the homestead. Thanks for the guidance!!!
Thank you for posting all your videos on this modification. I was looking online for some ideas and used your example to start a conversion of my own. Keep up the good work!
Glad it was helpful! I'd love to see what you come up with! These things are so much fun to make.
I've got an old husqvarna that was gifted to me, runs fine but the deck was jacked up beyond my desire to fix. So I've decided to turn into what you've got here.
Sweet! Good luck on your project!
That’s a great little ride Erik !! I really like the tires and wheels
The tires on the front are awesome huh ?
Love brother. Great job
Nice little Tractor,I also put those Carlisle X - trac tires in the front of my Tractors . They're great tires , especially in the snow.
I love Carlyes. Just add chains in the winter.
I love this! Amazing.
Thanks, I am inspired. Hello from Seattle
Hello there! The best part is being able to fix it up your way and the pride that you made it.
Ive built a few of them good job on it👍
I've done these before an most likely will again but I never had a pedal or changed the pulley. Think I'll make a little tractor! Thanks for the inspiration. Hello from Maine
Looks great and love the dump body.
Thanks 👍
That's a sweet machine! You gotta love it, when a Toy can also be a worker! great engine too. the Briggs 12/12.5 engines are My 2nd favorite small engine. Thanks for sharing the m.u.t.t. with us.
Inspirational!
I built an atv stile rack out of 1/2" metal conduit and mounted it to my hood so I would have a place to put my saw and what ever I need. I like your dump bed.
Nice work.
Thanks!
Geat idea I really like.
Very cool. There is an older local gentleman here that travels around town on his version of your Mutt. Everyone knows Jimmy and his "ride" around town.
I'm on process of buying old mower and gonna be swapping my 200sx atv motor into it and gonna do some work to suspension to got the atv wheel and ride smooth for off road and road
That sounds like a great project you are working on. Take your time and have fun with it.
I’m a seventy one year old Grandma and l’m planning on working on one at the farm that’s been abandoned, it will probably be my buddy with all the running around l do
Something like this would be perfect for you- Time saver and back saver
Ya beat me to it... Looking fer one at the right price.
At work i push s crop duster into a hanger with a small john deer tractor. When i bought my house i needed a way to push my boat into the back yard due to narrow alley. So i built a receiver hitch on front of riding mower. Its got the power to move the boat but too much weight on the steer tires. But still a fun ride without the mower.
lol love it!!
Nice build. Just what I want to do to a D series Deere that I’ve been given. Haven’t picked it up yet. Would be great on my 33 acres. Cut trails into the woods. Pull a small trailer. Nice job. Instead of paint on the running boards get a couple pieces of thin textured rubber and glue them down on both sides.
I have a Craftsman LT 2000 20 HP I have been converting over to a UTV. I had the old bagger from it I have taken and made into platform like yours but its a little higher off the back and stands off the back side and can be removed in under 10 seconds. I have not tested weight but confident I could put at least 100pnds on it. This also allows me to pull my AG cart without any modifications. I have just ordered the smaller rear-end pully to see if I can speed it up a little and researching tires I can find cheap.
Maby a couple hood latch toggles off a junkyard jeep for its hood? I'll be getting my dads old tractor up and running again. Too much fun
Those tires make the tractor 🚜 no doubt, now, what you need to do is scrounge around for a turbo charger off an old Yamaha Secca street bike, I think those bikes are from the 80's era, do a little plumbing work to the exaust/turbo and there ya have it.👍✌️🇺🇸
cool
Hello, Love this MUTT! Can you show how you did the pedal throttle control and pulley swap. Obtained some acreage and wanting to do something like this to get me going for small projects around the farm.
I think I will make MUTT3 this summer. I will go more indepth on how I do it
Another great video. I'm building something similar for my woodland, but just to get around and pull trolleys of firewood. One question about your MUTT-2: what do you think about lug tyres vs rib tyres for the front wheels?
YEA I WAS GIVE ONE A MONTH AGO MY PROJECT SEND PICS ONE DAY
Love to see it!
TRY TO GET YA SOME BEFORE PICS
I’m working on a husqvarna yth150. The hydrostatic transaxle is burned up but I put a five speed transaxle in it. It’s got a 15hp kohler command pro engine in it.
Yes it would make a great project. Up the road about a mile a guy has a 130 John Deere. He wants 250 for it but if I could get it more in my price range it epyld be a good one for a project like that
Hi I have 3 and 2 in the uk one in france I made the first one to pull and I made a field mower out of a dead craftman 12.5 hp 3 blade mower and a scraper out of a large propane tank cut in diagonally and fitted a couple of old small mower wheels it works well as I got about 2 acres of ruff land to sort out with it and it's holding up well the other 2 are being converted to work with a old rotorvator and the other one will be a type of dump truck all are peoples throw aways all the are tyres are second hand and were free so i self trained to weld from stick, mig and tig I saved up and bought a chinese plasma and tig welder with stick welder to for under £250 .00 the best money I have ever spent the plasma cutter is brilliant I have made all the kit out of other people's throw aways i love my old mowers they are like my father's and grandfather's old tractors small and useful they have saved me a fortune thanks for your video cheers from the uk
Glad to hear that you are so creative with these things, so many people just throw stuff away because they can not see the potential of something.
@@FarpointFarms I build loads of stuff I been given a old murry 12 hp which I am going to turn into a small digger I am looking for a small hydraulic pump as they are a bit rare here so I have to find something I can use so I will do a bit of research and find something that will work
Great build! Do you ever make it down Knoxville way? Our sears outlet here is a gold mine for parts - they have bumpers, sleeve hitches, blades, belts, I even got a canopy. Look me up if you do!
Always liked this idea ever since I first saw you convert one. How much weight do you tow with your trailer?
Love it , Im working on mine now . One question , where did you get the gas pedal ? Thanks
Dude looks like Jeffery Dean Morgan. Lol. Sweet project tho
I gotta get me a Negan tractor.
Hey, this is really long after the video, but I'm inspired to use my mom's old none running mower to make a useful ATV. Hopefully I'll post something back at the end of summer!
Half the fun is the build- go for it.
Ive always wondered if one of these would steer and handle better by swapping out the steering wheel for handlebars? I havent tried it, but it just seems like it would help one of these out alot.
Me too! I think you would have to change the steering ratio though as these require more than one turn lock to lock as is.
I am not young. I was considering a small vehicle. Lil Rascal to get around the farm. I aquired an old Lawn Chief. Free. Makes way more sense. It cost me $200 in upgrades as compared to 2 thousand for a med vehicle.
At the cost that you can make one of these, you can do it 10 times before breaking even with one that you buy brand new. Half the fun is building it to how you want it. Tinkering is a great stress reliever.
It's a flathead. Rebuilt that engine if it goes bad. Great engine
That gas pedal is $44 on Amazon. Debating on getting it. Looks goofy, but better looking than what I could fab. More solid than a hand brake.
Did you fill your transaxle with gear oil?
I made a welder out of one just like that
Love to see a picture!
@@FarpointFarms let me see if I can figure out how to post it
Does the tractor have enough low end torque to pull a deer or a 200 lb log out of the woods after the pulley swap?
In first gear it will pull like a normal tractor in 3rd. Anything higher than that and it doesn't have much pull.
You "could" always find a cheap (no more than $15) Little Red Wagon for the Dump Bed...
now i just earn around half a million pounds to buy a house+land in South West England to have enough space so i can have a MUTT mower to drive around in :D
Make a roll cage😀
my wife would kill me- good idea though
I've got a craftsman lt1000 I'm working on , any ideas how to bypass the governor to add a gas pedal ? Or anything you may know of I should do
I am not sure. but if you find out let me know how it goes.
@@FarpointFarms there is a switch under the floor board with black and white wires , unplug it and jump white wires with a piece of wire or paper clip,, ,it's the same as the seat switch,, be careful as always
Where u get those back tires so cheap?
Pre inflation. Sorry!
So how'd you make it faster? Did you do a pulley swap?
Yes. I went from a 9 inch pulley to a 4 1/2 inch. Nice!!
@@FarpointFarms Did you buy the pulley or just flip the shaft around and use the pulley for the deck? Sorry if im bugging you but I'm trying to make my own ''ATV'' and the first thing I want to do is make it faster.
was it difficult to remove the blade/deck?? My buddies are laughing at me but ive been talking about doing exactly this.. I'm a photographer, i shoot Watercross racing.. and im not quite as young as i used to be, and haulin around 30 lbs of camera gear for 8 hours up and down beaches and lakes is getting a bit much, but I can't justify dropping $1,500 for a quad...
it was not hard at all- It might be easier if you have a buddy to drag the deck away- It will be money well saved
Tiny tires.
Tires ate not cheap, and the ground clearance is still 8 inches. Love this little monster.
Oh I know, I'm into off-road mowers and I also have two Murray's
