As a shield user, my best experience with negating damage comes from equipping light gear with high elemental defenses, since you block all physical damage anyway... so, reducing any elemental chip damage that goes through helps a bunch. Besides, you can easily eat crab meat to increase your physical defense by 20%, on top of Golden Vow boosting everything across the board. Don't forget that with 2 extra points in Faith, you can use the Lord's Divine Fortification, the most important damage type to reduce against late-game. Also, the Old Lord's Talisman is great for your spell buffs, and does affect HP regen incantations (both in duration and potency, unlike in DKS3), and I personally like it over the Ritual Sword Talisman.
Yep, the nice thing about a Shield Build is that you can really ignore Heavy Armor if you want and STILL retain massive tanking potential! I cover some general sources of Damage Negation here: ruclips.net/video/iLCIFe9h6zc/видео.html
You have a good example of a combo of lighter armor that maximizes the non physical damage reduction? I'm sort of torn, I think I need to find a good combo that still hits the fashion aspect of being a dude with a giant shield.
@@TetsuoIronMan Most of the lighter armor, including the classic Mage Robes tend to have higher non physical negation. What can do is also add the Opaline Hardtear to your Flask Mix, as that will highly increase your non physical negation.
As soon as I saw this, I started upgrading my dex and arc and followed this build to the T. I went from a struggling greatsword build and just beat Margott on my 3rd try. Thanks for this!

Was looking for something like this! My favorite build from Dark Souls 3 was using the Moaning Shield with the Magic Shield spell for infinite blocking, glad to have found a similar build for this game as well.
Although medium shields don't have as much guard boost as greatshields, putting Scholar's Shield on a Brass Shield still gets the job done well enough for you to still tank with it. A nice thing to know for those with pure Dex builds.
Started a new char to try out this build. Seems good so far, using ice spear ash of war on the spear + eclipse shield. Takes a while to adjust to the playstyle but managed to kill Leonine, Margit and Godrick with very little effort and no scholar shield spell. Looking forward to getting to Altus Plateau for the guard boost talisman. As for attr. have just the min req. to use shield/weapon/spell.
Yeah, just Ice Spear + a good Greatshield & Naginata already makes for a very fun and smooth playstyle! And it only gets better from there as you upgrade your character.
I've really enjoyed playing a version of this build. So far the only real issue I had was with Astel. I've been using the Shield Grease consumable instead of having to fuss with sorceries, though. I'm not sure if there's a difference, as I'm still working on getting my Fingerprint Shield upgraded.
As someone who played the game using a shield build similar to this but without a bleeding weapon, the hardest bosses will be Malenia and Malekith. Malenia can heals with each attack she hits, even if it hits your shield, and Malekith inflicts some kind of burning that makes you lose a ton of health even after blocking. Using a greatspear with no bleeding I could only outdamage Malenia's regeneration on the first phase, and I couldn't find any way to mitigate the burning damage from Malekith either, I ended up just spamming Bloodhound Step to beat these two bosses. That said, the build was good enough to defeat all other bosses easily, and I think having a good bleed weapon will indeed be enough to outdamage Malenia's regeneration on phase 2.
Yep, Bleed can make a massive different against these bosses, especially Malenia because we get to then easily outdamage her heals even on blocks! Plus Bleed proc will stagger her out of her attacks, even the deadly Waterfowl Dance!
Decent Greatshield + RoB + mimic lets you quickly destroy Melania (at least on NG+). No dodging needed. I tried it a few times without the mimic but failed for lack of patience. RoB is not a poking weapon so you are exposed on spamming L2.
There's a really easy way to get to the right platform with some dodge rolls, when going for the fingerprint shield. Look for the guide on youtube if you guys are having trouble. Great video, btw
Thank you for the comment! Yeah, it can be a bit painful to get the Fingerprint the first time, but after getting the hand of it it's not that troublesome.
Very nice guide, another option is to get hoarfrost stomp from the invisible scarab by Caria Manor, can be applied to spears and doesn't require fighting a Night Calvary Rider. You need to go to the Lift of Dectus which is on the way anyway. Far easier method of getting cold affinity
@@youwillknowrlc68 oh yeah if you intend to use the AoW and not just save your fp for barricade shield it's a better ability than hoarfrost. Just seems like the main idea is just to have frost build up
Great update to the build! Would you consider making a build for the Spiked Palisade Shield? I have been using that with a different character and have been loving it so far in conjunction with Shield Crash Ash of War!
Thank you! And that does sound interesting as well, I've been looking into making a Shield Build that actually uses the SHIELD as a weapon instead of Rapiers/Spears. 😁
I highly recommend using this build on a character you’ve gone way above 150 on, it’s literally so OP with buffs I use a rapier with this build and completely buffed I’m hitting over 1300 constantly
@@cRPGBro this method can literally melt every single boss minus the fire giant/Elden beast just cause how much they move. Other than that I’ve tested it out vs Maliketh, Radagon, etc and it’s worked on em all
I´m a bit of an oddball here since i REALLY like the spiked palisade shield. Since it doesn´t have 100% physical reduction, you cannot simply keep tanking, you HAVE to go on the offensive. I have mine equiped with shield crash and cold. You can charge right into enemies attacks, even the heavy ones. A thing of beauty
Yeah, the main "strategy" to it I think is to simply jump without hugging the wall, because touching the wall tends to send you away to your death! But getting to Mogh the boss is already a pain by itself, hah. Those sewers are awful.
@@cRPGBro I don't think anybody actually likes the sewers lol...It's like the swamps in Dark Souls 3. And yeah, took me like 30 tries before I found a very similar strategy to get to it. I was more excited than beating the final boss in the game lol
Just a tip for minmaxing(?) If you really want you can get only 11 int and equip marikas scarseal everytime you want to buff(again just a small tip you can do as for myself im too lazy lmao)
Note that the Gilded Greatshield is ever so slightly better than the Distinguished Greatshied, and can drop from Godrick Knight enemies, one of which is at the Gatefront Ruins, so if you grind that spot early game (like I did. I’m not sure it’s the most efficient non-cheese way, but it was the best I found) and can take him down you may get one, saving you 5k.
A quick tip on getting the Naginata and possibly a bug. You can get the Grace to the other side of Caelid that's shown in this video by getting the grace that's near it's boss area. You can go there by warping to the Church of Marika where you get the physick and ride up to where you get to the end of the tunnel where you see Alexander is in front of the closed door. Rest at that Grace, port to the roundtable hold and viola! the other side of the grace is magically unlocked for some reason.
Yep! It was a happy accident mind you. I was just exploring and found Alexander by accident. Rested at the Grace and went to the Roundtable hold for the first time via the Melena scripted talk, since it triggers when you go to caelid for the first time or beat Margitt. Wanted to talk to Alexander more but found about the other Grace and said to myself: "Wait a gosh darn minute, I haven't been here before?" Lo and behold, it was actually the starting point for that dungeon, lmao. Also, after you open that shortcut to the grace, you will have extra dialog from Alexander, where he was shocked that a door magically appeared in front of him, lol
As of patch 1.0.7 it's no longer possible to get 100% guard boost by applying scholar's shield to this shield, you can still get close, but blocking completely without using stamina is no longer possible at all it seems.
I got inspiered by this. The phalanx playstyle isnt fully my playstyle but overall the video was very informative since i plan on being a sword & board knight
Thanks for the note! It's a good thing we can rely on the earlier Greatshields with Scholar's Shield until we can take on the Royal Capital enemies then.
Platforming to those numerous narrow beams is one of the most frustrating things in this game. After trying some time ago following another guide and failing 1000 times and giving up I decided to try again seeing your guide. After dying about 20 times now I've conceded defeat once again and giving up. Just not worth the frustration.
It is indeed one of the most annoying parts of the game. What I can tell you is that if you aren't against making a backup save, you can just save >quit on every new platform, then if you die you just replace the save.
You're welcome, bro! Now go have fun tanking even Malenia in Elden Ring and make Have proud 😀 Speaking of which, please check my Tanking Guide too: ruclips.net/video/iLCIFe9h6zc/видео.html
Great video. At 17:30 you show 324 equip load. How is this possible given your set up? You have relatively low endurance and talismans that don’t help.
TL;DR How to get 100 guard boost(GB) post 1.04 Scholar's Shield + Finger Print (base 80 GB) Scholar's Shield + Great Shield Talisman + Any shield with base 74 ish GB Barricade Shield + Any shield with base 70 GB Scholar's Shield pros/cons - lasts WAY longer than Barricade shield - the buff will disappear if you put the weapon away this means you can't use a incantation to buff your right hand weapon and the best way to use it is to use it is with no skill on he shield with your RH weapon art Barricade Shield pros/cons -the duration to mana consumption effeciency is kinda crap compared to Scholar's -works with more than one shield without Great Shield Talisman to hit 100 GB -gives you more flexibility in your loadout since it doesn't have the incantation buff restriction.
@@andresouza3992 So the weird thing is GS talisman starts getting nerfed at ard 75 GB and stat numbers shown don't show the decimals, u're gonna have to hope that it can round up to 100. I personally used the Golden Great Shield and it seemed to be working at ard 74-75. But I did eventually switched to barricade + golden great shield for exploration and finger print and scholar's for bosses. But hey if I'm wrong tell me...
Thanks! And yep, Barricade Shield is not needed, especially as it does not stack with Scholar's Shield ever since the nerf. You can still use it if you want, but it's only going to make a difference early on when your Greatshield is not yet capable of zero stamina on block. But frankly, it's quite micromanagement heavy as the duration is just 5s as opposed to 1m for Scholar. Scholar's Shield + a decent early Greatshield will have you take only a little Stamina on block anyways.

Greetings, and thank you for your guide. I tried following the guide and equipped both the Naginata (+2) and Greatshield (+0, upgrading it doesn't seem to raise its Guard Boost rating, but despite many attempts, I cannot seem to beat the Night Cavalry. As such, I'd like to ask yoy the following: - Aren't all attacks blockable? It seems that despite blocking, I take full damage from the horse's hoof attacks. - I leveled up Dexterity, Intelligence and Strength in order to wield Naginata and Greatshield+Scholar's, but isn't some Endurance required in the early game? I had to switch from starting gear to something lighter, as I would be Overloaded otherwise. - Since Distinguished Greatshield+Scholar's Shield bring us at 68+25=93% Guard Boost, is the Greatshield Talisman even necessary? - Am I simply doing something wrong? Versus Night's Cavalry, guard counters don't seem to do much more damage compared to simplt turtling, and cost way more stamina to boot, potentially leaving me open to counterattacks. Thank you in advance, an aspiring kindred turtle. 🍴 🐢
@@vitorferreiradelima24 actually, I did it last night. No, you cannot block everything (there is actually a previous video of the same build, for 1.03, it is mentioned towards the end). Grapples, AoEs and the like cannot be blocked, that also includes the horse's hoof attacks if I'm not mistaken. I did level up Endurance in order to equip heavier armor, but that did not play any role at all, 2 unmitigated strikes from the rider and you're out. With only one talisman slot available yet, I did it with only Soreseal did not take even chip stamina damage from blocking. Just keep your cool, poke whenever you can and take breathers to replenish stamina and refresh Scholar's Shield (you most likely will have to do so). Take advantage of when the rider falls off the horse for a critical hit. Keep your cool and you can do it. :)
Hi there, and apology for the late reply. Not all attacks are blockable, like some wide area attacks or overhead attacks. Endurance isn't that necessary if you optimize the use of the Winged Crystal Tear. Greatshield Talisman can be useful because 100% Guard Boost can make a big difference, before you get Fingerprint anyways. For Night Cavalry and all the enemies with very fast attacks that DON'T stagger on block, you want to turtle + poke instead of Guard Counter. Guard Counter is for enemies that will stagger when blocked, so you don't leave yourself open for combo hits.
Have you tried the lance with bleed infusion? It counts as a great weapon, so for general purpose play, it should be extremely helpful because it staggers most enemies. I haven't tried it myself though, so I'm not really sure. Also, the Naginata is definitely still much better for bosses that you just can't stagger at all. (I'm looking at you, tree avatar.)
Lance can work, but sadly I believe Naginata will always be better because you can also go Bleed/Occult with it, and it has innate Bleed. Also, Seppuku + a innate Bleed weapon is just crazy! It's why poor Malenia gets bled in just 2 hits for example.
@@JohnSmith-bs9ym Yes you can put Seppuku on the lance. (See it on some youtube video) And bonus is the Lance have so much higher poise break that it is crazy. Bonus #2 the best (imo) mount attack holding heavy attack in the game. Love it !!! Got to level 99 i think it was with the Cross-Naginata and give up. The damage was on the lower side for me, And i strungle in every fight Vs Boss / Mini Boss. I have now start again with the Lance with the Ash of War flame of the redmanes, That have become the best ash of war for me. I am at level 83 and kill every thing so easy and fast. The Lance poise break plus flame of the redmanes that poise break every thing so damn fast, Have made it super fun for me. Change to the Miséricorde with 140 Crite for the add damage when target is stagger / stun. When i get Seppuku i am going to put it on the Pike, For is long reach and fast attack speed. @@sgt_badedyr4445 Yeah, stagger and poise break are godsends in the early-mid game. In my first run, I literally picked up the lordsworn greatsword first thing and stuck with it the entire game. Power stanced it with the bastard sword for ultra light great weapon stagger and I was killing everything with ease pre fire giant. 2nd run I did two curved swords right at the start, and I was miserable because these things have zero stagger lol...
I've noticed in your builds you sometimes use flask tears to meet various requirements. That seems impractical to me. For example, in this build you could only use your shield for 3 minutes and then you'd have to visit a site of grace to recharge the flask.
Hi there, I often use the Wondrous Flask effects early game to make up for when you wouldn't have enough points to increase with just leveling. I also really like using the Winged Crystal Tear for fast rolling against bosses or pvp as the duration is more than enough.
Wait, question on Malenia for this build: can’t she still grab you??? First form should be fine but iirc her second form grab is an instant-kill on players? (Not mimic) or can she not grab through the big shield?
Grab attacks can still go past Shield, but you can almost always stagger Malenia out of the grab through normal attacks + the bleed procs. Also, you can still dodge the Grab. And for a Shield Build, you should still retain enough Damage Negation that you won't be one shot by her grab.
Malenia can grab, but that attack is super easy to dodge. As a bonus she does not seem to have much hyperarmor during the grab. With a lance at least I could always just stun her out of the attack. I would also advise to dodge her dash attack where she jumps slightly up and dashes/thrusts when she lands. If you don't dodge that then she gains A LOT of health back and it is a pretty easy dodge. The big problem in phase two is her attack where she jumps up and then hits directly downward followed by an explosion. That attack shouldn't be shielded either so I would also advise to learn the timing of the move. These 3 moves are definitely among the easiest moves to dodge though so it is not a big problem.
That's the beauty about Shield Builds, you don't need to parry at all! We can easily achieve enough Guard Boost for minimal or zero stamina lost on Guard, so just hold guard and poke away 😀
You can :) All you need are the Left & Right Halves of the Dectus Medallion which I show how to get, one at Fort Haight and the other at Fort Faroth. You can skip Stormveil Castle and its bosses and reach Liurnia of the Lakes region for the Lift by going down the broken bridge to the east of the Castle.
Is there any important information that changed from the time this video was released to the current patch 1.10? I wonder what would be the best setup if I used a Medium Shield instead.
I use the Lance with the heavy setting and the eclipse sheild( cuz i don't know any better midgame sheild. Im lvl 36 rn) and I've noticed that the Lance if put with a bleed setting, it's scaling becomes C for both STR and DEX and D for ARC bit ALSO 100 BLEED BUILDUP. But unfortunately, i haven't found an ash of war tht can set the lance to bleed mode I'm lvl 70 now. Cuz i have no life and make poor irl decisions.
@@cRPGBro ye. but the perfectionist in me wants to hyperinvest in only one attribute. STR. And although we can make the C.Naginata heavy, it's scaling and base phy dmg is less thn the heavy lance. Besides, since the bleed bar diminishes quickly and only procs when the bar is full. Means tht you'll have to apply the bleed quick enough for bloodloss to do dmg. And personally, tht doesn't fit my playstyle of taking fights slowly And imo. Isn't great early game cuz not enough FP and stamina to make it work smoothly. Edit. Ps. My character's background is tht she trained to be a knight. Aand.. Rn she has Lhutel the headless as a summon. So ye Knightly Sisterhood With matching armour and sheilds And lance cuz C.naginata is jpnese which isn't knight equipment hehe
Just a simple question regarding your build, which i love so far (just killed Radahn, and explored Nokron a bit). At what point do you recommend switching out of Ice Lance Ash of War for an occult AoW ? Also, which occult AoW should i use until i get my hands on Seppuku ?
I recommend getting it as soon as you have a decent amount of Arcane and can achieve Occult Infusion which is right after Radahn indeed in the Eternal City. Unfortunately, as far as Ash of War, Seppukky truly is the best choice.
I don’t remember if you can use it on spears, but I’m almost certain you can, (definitely works on halberds so I think it’s all polearms) there’s an occult AoW called spectral lance you can get somewhere in the Academy, and I think that’s the earliest/easiest way you can attune a weapon with arcane scaling without the whetblade. It’s pretty good too, the damage isn’t great, but it’s crazy long ranged and does a butt ton of poise damage.
What would be the minimum amout of guard boost required in order to achieve 100 guard boost if you use both scholar shield and great sheild talisman? If the great shield talisman grants full 1.1 boost to innate 75 guard boost post nerf, you could achieve 99.9 with some early shields like the eclipse crest as you show in the last video
@@cRPGBro if my math is right the guard boost of scholar shield would be x1.2 and you would need about 84 guard boost to reach 100 after casting scholar shield. What shield reaches 84 guard boost with the great shield talisman other than fingerprint?
@@인성툴 This is a bit late but besides the fingerprint shield (with a default guardboost of 90 at +25), the next best shield in terms of guard boost is the visage shield (with a default guardboost of 82 at +10). However, It is probably not worth leveling up if you are planning on using it as a placeholder since by the time you can get the shield to +10 you would probably already have the fingerprint shield. One other thing to consider is that the visage shield is in a chest after you to fight a mini boss in caelem, so it may be out of the way for you depending on whether or not you want to deal w/ the boss and/or you are high enough level. (Since I was playing coop w/ friends, I legit stumbled onto the shield by accident while running around caelem). P.S. in case you don't know, the default guardboost on the fingerprint shield +0 is 81 and the default guardboost on the visage shield +0 is 75 I can also confirm that at 85 guardboost + scholars shield will achieve 100 guardboost, not sure about anything lower though since I basically immediately upgraded the finger shield once I got it from 81 to 85 guardboost
Unfortunately, no. Halberds are not thrusting weapons in Elden Ring, therefore you cannot "poke" with them behind a shield. Other thrusting weapons would be Rapiers, they also work.
for anyone who wants 100 guard boost before u get a fingerprint shield the visage shield +10 with greatshield tailsman and scholars shield gives u 100 guard boost

Moghwyn's Spear is amazing for spamming its very powerful Weapon Art, which can be done from decent range, but when it comes to actual Shield Poking/Turtling, Occult Cross Naginata is by far the best. The reason being the extra Bleed from Seppuku Ash of War makes a really massive difference.
I am currently building a Shield & Spear warrior. When I thought he should be ready for Trolls, I battled the one at the Third Church Of Marika and killed it with the Lance. Reward = 0 Runes. Switched to the Great Epée, again no Runes for the kill. Do you have an idea what's going on there? Edit: I just killed the Troll south of the Saintsbridge site of Grace and got the runes for the kill. It's just the Troll at 4th CoM that cheats me, and only if I'm using pokes. Bloodhound's Fang works just fine there.

You can level INT, but the damage increase won't really be that high, it's mostly for the Frostbite proc. Ideally you want to change it later to Occult Cross Naginata.
This is true, but thankfully because most of the damage will be absorbed by our Shield, you really can go with whatever armor style you want 😀 Especially as Physical is 100% Blocked, and the lighter armor sets often have higher Elemental/Magic Negation despite the lower Physical. There are also some other ways to increase Damage Negation without armor thankfully like Ironjar Aromatic, Boiled Crab & Prawn and so on. I cover them here: ruclips.net/video/iLCIFe9h6zc/видео.html

Cross Naginata with Occult Infusion can still add quite a lot of pure physical damage regardless of Bleed & Frost. That's why I recommend going with Arcane & Occult, you still retain nice physical damage regardless of Bleed procs. Besides that, other tools to increase damage like the many buffs such as Golden Vow etc. It's also good to use Mohg's Shackle to stun him for some nice damage through free hits at the start of the fight.
You can rush for the Altus Plateau very early for the Distinguished Greatshield, which is easily bought. You can also farm the Gilded Greatshield or Eclipse Creat Greatshield early on if you prefer. Fingerprint is the one that's locked behind 2 Story Bosses and 1 optional boss.
For bosses, where Damage Negation is more important, I simply use the Winged Crystal Tear as explained at 09:45 But you don't really need heavy armor, you can even fight NAKED with a Shield, that's how good Shields are!

I have to ask, only when I level INT it only adds dmg to my naginata once it has aow ice spear and cold affinity.
I've really enjoyed playing a version of this build. So far the only real issue I had was with Astel. I've been using the Shield Grease consumable instead of having to fuss with sorceries, though. I'm not sure if there's a difference, as I'm still working on getting my Fingerprint Shield upgraded.
You can use the Shield Grease too as a replacement for Scholar's Shield, the effect is somewhat similar 😀
You are correct, it's by far the easiest and fastest way of getting Frost Affinity early!
I've used both and prefer Ice Pear AoW
Due to range and damage
@@youwillknowrlc68 oh yeah if you intend to use the AoW and not just save your fp for barricade shield it's a better ability than hoarfrost. Just seems like the main idea is just to have frost build up
Dude, this video was AMAZING. You are SO helpful!!!
Thank you!
Glad I was able to help.
You are my favourite streamer of elden ring content! Good stuff thank you. Greetings from germany
Nice! I see from RUclips Analytics Germany has become my 2nd popular country for viewers, that's really neat 😁
Really appreciate the support, bro!
Yeah, Shield + Poke Turtle Builds are truly amazing!
Pro tip: That whole route to the fingerprint shield inflicts the madness status directly at the human player.
Also, glory to the three fingers!!
F the three fingers
MAY CHAOS CONSUME THE WORLD
Glory to The Golden Order
There's a strange satisfaction playing a shield user. I get more enjoyment out of it than any other playstyle.
I can say the same as well!
Being able to absorb almost all damage feels really great.
Just a tip for minmaxing(?) If you really want you can get only 11 int and equip marikas scarseal everytime you want to buff(again just a small tip you can do as for myself im too lazy lmao)
Yeah, that works.
I also really like going with Godrick's Great Rune, the +5 to ALL stats helps a lot!
@@cRPGBro oh yeah I forgot about that lol
Great guides man
Loved all these videos
Thank you for the support as always, man! 😁
Notes to self 3:00 shield 3:46 wpn 5:38 buff 6:06 staff
Note that the Gilded Greatshield is ever so slightly better than the Distinguished Greatshied, and can drop from Godrick Knight enemies, one of which is at the Gatefront Ruins, so if you grind that spot early game (like I did. I’m not sure it’s the most efficient non-cheese way, but it was the best I found) and can take him down you may get one, saving you 5k.
Great video as always! Thanks for the build update.
No problem 👍
And thanks for always being in the comments too, man!
I did your build on 1.03 and had a Lot of fun,but instead i used flame of readmanes. Nome ill try Ice spear.
Interesting! I had no idea you could do that.
I think they Nerf fingerprint shield. I'm on Patch 1.10 and max +25 only gave you 86 GB
Glad I could help you change your mind!
It's a pity we can't attack behind our shield with Swords, HOWEVER, you can use Rapiers as well!
One of the best breakdown of a build video
Thank you!
I'm hoping to make more Elden Ring videos once the DLC comes at last!
Very usefull tips. I've finished the game with this build. Easy and basically god mode 😂
It sure feels like God Mode indeed 😀
I just got the Serpent Hunter and beat Rykard. I immediately wanted to make a hero using the Serpent Hunter, heavy knight armor, and a huge shield.
Mah man post one more guide. I press one more like button
Good job, thank you :)
Thank you for the support, bro! 😁
More Guides to come no doubt!
You need to defeat Morgott too to reach the fingerprint shield. You can reach Mogh before it but it won’t go further before that.
Thanks for the note!
It's a good thing we can rely on the earlier Greatshields with Scholar's Shield until we can take on the Royal Capital enemies then.
Manor Towershield is pretty decent and it's easy to obtain it early
AND require only 30 STR
Sweet, an update to the sparta build.
A build and playstyle that thankfully remains OP to the day 😁
I prefer to use Great Lance + Distinguished Greatshield + Gelmir Knight Set for fashion
That does look pretty great indeed!
In the Unbreakable name of Havel, I salute you and thank you!
You're welcome, bro!
Now go have fun tanking even Malenia in Elden Ring and make Have proud 😀

It can be a pain to get but is really worth it.
Great video. At 17:30 you show 324 equip load. How is this possible given your set up? You have relatively low endurance and talismans that don’t help.
Hi there, it's all thanks to the Winged Crystal Tear, I talk about it here:
ruclips.net/video/aHhzPa62qEU/видео.html
TL;DR How to get 100 guard boost(GB) post 1.04
Scholar's Shield + Finger Print (base 80 GB)
Scholar's Shield + Great Shield Talisman + Any shield with base 74 ish GB
Barricade Shield + Any shield with base 70 GB
Scholar's Shield pros/cons
- lasts WAY longer than Barricade shield
- the buff will disappear if you put the weapon away this means you can't use a incantation to buff your right hand weapon and the best way to use it is to use it is with no skill on he shield with your RH weapon art
Barricade Shield pros/cons
-the duration to mana consumption effeciency is kinda crap compared to Scholar's
-works with more than one shield without Great Shield Talisman to hit 100 GB
-gives you more flexibility in your loadout since it doesn't have the incantation buff restriction.
Scholar's Shield + Great Shield Talisman + Eclipse Crest Greatshield(Upgrade to+25 = 75 GB)
With this i can reach 100 GB?
@@andresouza3992 So the weird thing is GS talisman starts getting nerfed at ard 75 GB and stat numbers shown don't show the decimals, u're gonna have to hope that it can round up to 100. I personally used the Golden Great Shield and it seemed to be working at ard 74-75. But I did eventually switched to barricade + golden great shield for exploration and finger print and scholar's for bosses. But hey if I'm wrong tell me...
Starting a new character. Thanks!
Hope you have fun with the Shield Build 😀
Like always very informative guide, good job dude, one question so you not use barricade shield at this build? only scholars shield?
@@cRPGBro like best guide's you make you smash a best answer on questions dude, thanks you very much I'll try it for sure, keep make a great content you doing it well 💪🏻🙏🏻
Greetings, and thank you for your guide.
I tried following the guide and equipped both the Naginata (+2) and Greatshield (+0, upgrading it doesn't seem to raise its Guard Boost rating, but despite many attempts, I cannot seem to beat the Night Cavalry. As such, I'd like to ask yoy the following:
- Aren't all attacks blockable?
Those are the same questions I have
@@vitorferreiradelima24 actually, I did it last night.
@@cRPGBro Wait, just a random thought, can we put Seppuku on the lance?
@@JohnSmith-bs9ym
Yes you can put Seppuku on the lance. (See it on some youtube video)
And bonus is the Lance have so much higher poise break that it is crazy.
Again it is only my opinion.
Kindly.
Edit: Forgot to say, If you want bleed on you Spear only on, There is all so "piked Spear " that come with it.
It have lower Requments Str 14 - Dex 16, and weight is 6 Vs Cross-Naginata 8
Have D D scaling Vs Cross-Naginata D C, Something to think about.
@@cRPGBro How do you get scholars shield activated and seppuku?
The Fingerprint shield is so far into the game I really can't be arsed tbh
The distinguished greatshield is still very good with scholars shield
Yeah, I personally wish it was easier to get and earlier too.
With 3 minutes duration you have enough time to beat pretty much any boss in the game
You can get the Gilded Greatshield even earlier off of the nights at the Gatefront Ruins
Looks like a great build to try may try it out but gotta say my parring reaction time is not the best or fastest
That's the beauty about Shield Builds, you don't need to parry at all!
We can easily achieve enough Guard Boost for minimal or zero stamina lost on Guard, so just hold guard and poke away 😀
Thanks man
You're welcome!
Have fun with the Shield Build.
today I learned that upgrading a shield increases its guard boost rating.
It does, and can make quite a big difference with the bigger upgrades!
Thx a lot. I will try that out :)
Can i activate and use the dectus lift without beating the first and second boss??
You can :)
All you need are the Left & Right Halves of the Dectus Medallion which I show how to get, one at Fort Haight and the other at Fort Faroth.
You can skip Stormveil Castle and its bosses and reach Liurnia of the Lakes region for the Lift by going down the broken bridge to the east of the Castle.
If you're looking to complete quest lines, skipping ahead to Altus Plateau will prematurely stop/ruin several.
But unfortunately, i haven't found an ash of war tht can set the lance to bleed mode
I'm lvl 70 now. Cuz i have no life and make poor irl decisions.
For Lance with Bleed, you pretty much have to wait for Seppukku or the Whestones to add Bleed and Occult, I believe.
@@cRPGBro ye. but the perfectionist in me wants to hyperinvest in only one attribute. STR. And although we can make the C.Naginata heavy,
it's scaling and base phy dmg is less thn the heavy lance.
Besides, since the bleed bar diminishes quickly and only procs when the bar is full. Means tht you'll have to apply the bleed quick enough for bloodloss to do dmg.
And personally, tht doesn't fit my playstyle of taking fights slowly
And imo. Isn't great early game cuz not enough FP and stamina to make it work smoothly.
Edit.
Ps. My character's background is tht she trained to be a knight.
Aand..
Rn she has Lhutel the headless as a summon.
So ye Knightly Sisterhood
With matching armour and sheilds
And lance cuz C.naginata is jpnese which isn't knight equipment hehe
@@pizzamozzerrella8567 Well, fun backstories and roleplaying a certain character can certainly make the game more enjoyable, so I'm all for that!
I believe something around ~85 to be safe, without the Greatshield Talisman.
P.S. in case you don't know, the default guardboost on the fingerprint shield +0 is 81 and the default guardboost on the visage shield +0 is 75
I can also confirm that at 85 guardboost + scholars shield will achieve 100 guardboost, not sure about anything lower though since I basically immediately upgraded the finger shield once I got it from 81 to 85 guardboost
Can you poke with a halberd? Would be fun to do a halberd run with a shield if possible.
Unfortunately, no.
Only with Rapiers & Spears/Greatspears.
@@cRPGBro Ah ok, well thanks for answering. Really enjoy your work! Keep it up!

Inst better to invest in int to increase the weapon damage?
Arcane will also increase pure physical damage once we add Occult Affinity, it will give the Cross Naginata B scaling in Arcane which is pretty neat!
@@cRPGBro Got it! Thanks for answering :)
Oh I get it, once i get an occult affinity, i should respec my char so I can raise arcane. Simce I am raising int now for the +dmg on cold affinity.
Will I mess up any quest/npcs if I go for the shield and the medallion early?
Can you use Commander Niall's halberd with this build, like naginata - poke and shield at same time ?
Unfortunately, no.
Halberds are not thrusting weapons in Elden Ring, therefore you cannot "poke" with them behind a shield.
Other thrusting weapons would be Rapiers, they also work.
for anyone who wants 100 guard boost before u get a fingerprint shield the visage shield +10 with greatshield tailsman and scholars shield gives u 100 guard boost

with one of the patches , they made it so impoosable to get 100 guard boost , so idk this build is kinda garbo now
The easiest early greatshield is the gilded greatshield. It drops from that one godrick knight in gatefront ruins from the start of the game.
Indeed, as far as very very early.

Great view. Well put together and informative.
Thank you.
Hope you have a great time with the Shield Build, it's certainly very fun and effective too!
How would you say Mohgwyn’s sacred spear vs Occult Cross Naginata plays out?
Moghwyn's Spear is amazing for spamming its very powerful Weapon Art, which can be done from decent range, but when it comes to actual Shield Poking/Turtling, Occult Cross Naginata is by far the best.
The reason being the extra Bleed from Seppuku Ash of War makes a really massive difference.
I am currently building a Shield & Spear warrior. When I thought he should be ready for Trolls, I battled the one at the Third Church Of Marika and killed it with the Lance. Reward = 0 Runes. I killed it a second time, again no Runes earned. Booted up the game anew, again no Runes for the kill. The game plays the sound but no Runes come in.
Hi! How much endurance should I put if I wanna use heavy armor? :)
You dont need armor, or endurance
Ideally you should go with the Winged Crystal Tear instead, but if you want to invest in END, then 20-30 is more than enough.
Hey, when I want to put the Ice Spear I can pick from Standard to Magic to Cold and some other options. Which do you pick?
Cold would be best as the Frostbite effect is super power, when you proc it, you take a big chunk of the enemy's HP and ALSO reduce their defenses against all damage sources!
@@cRPGBro Thanks :)

First one is Skeleton Militiamen, because they regenerate upon death unless the enemy hits them in their recovery state:

Yo struggling at the moment at the Elden beast, any idea how to handle the Elden beast with this build ? Do I need some sorcery, incanations to deal better damage / survie ? Another thing is that I am naked cause I put all point in arcane for the scale of process. Thx for help
I've been tanking this whole time. I killed the crucible knight and misbegotten warrior at like lvl 55 and just tanked them after trying all these flashy moves and shit.
I still have ice spear AOW on my Cross Naginata. Am I right in leveling int, because if i level str/dex it doesnt add to my dmg. But when int, it does add 1 dmg per level.
You can level INT, but the damage increase won't really be that high, it's mostly for the Frostbite proc.
Ideally you want to change it later to Occult Cross Naginata.
Only critique is the weight, depending on physick flask won’t cut it if you’re overloaded as it doesn’t last forever…
This is true, but thankfully because most of the damage will be absorbed by our Shield, you really can go with whatever armor style you want 😀
Especially as Physical is 100% Blocked, and the lighter armor sets often have higher Elemental/Magic Negation despite the lower Physical.
There are also some other ways to increase Damage Negation without armor thankfully like Ironjar Aromatic, Boiled Crab & Prawn and so on.
I cover them here: ruclips.net/video/iLCIFe9h6zc/видео.html

I’m trying this but I feel like even with occult nagi +19 I do
Like zero dmg to the bosses
Are you also applying Seppukku?
There are many other buffs you can use you increase your damage too, I explain them here: ruclips.net/video/ZKZg8s1sgsg/видео.html
@@cRPGBro coincidentally I’m on a string of bosses that are immune to bleed but I managed to apply the cold weapon and beat some of them. I think I might just be burned out on it though, I’ll come back to it after I take a break lol
how did you get the max equip load so high?
It's all from the Winged Crystal Tear as explained at 09:45
What about early rune farm with this method ?😅
Hi ! How come your max load jumped from 72 to 324 ???? How did you do that
Winged Crystal Tear effect!
How did you get the great shield talisman and still be light equipped?
I got it and went straight to heavy
can you hit 100% guard boost with any shields other than the fingerprint?
How do you beat Mohg the Omen to even get to the fingerprint shield? I tried. He's immune to both bleed and ice, so there's no way to do enough damage with the tools this build has available.
@@cRPGBro Ah. Thank you. I'll just try and level up more then. So arcane scaling gets better.
Anyone know if this video is still viable with the latest patch? Looking to start a new playthrough for the dlc 😄
hey I get the schola's shield skill but i cant use in my shield why? help
Scholar's Shield is a Sorcery, so you can cast it by equipping a staff on right hand.
Your shield should glow blue after that for the entire duration.
@@cRPGBro thank youuuuu
thanks
You're welcome 😁
How do you have 324 equip load with 25 endurance?
It's from the Winged Crystal Tear, I explain the steps to get it at 09:45
By the time you reach that shield, you would beat the game
You can rush for the Altus Plateau very early for the Distinguished Greatshield, which is easily bought.
You can also farm the Gilded Greatshield or Eclipse Creat Greatshield early on if you prefer.
Fingerprint is the one that's locked behind 2 Story Bosses and 1 optional boss.
How do u move with 109/72 weight
For bosses, where Damage Negation is more important, I simply use the Winged Crystal Tear as explained at 09:45
But you don't really need heavy armor, you can even fight NAKED with a Shield, that's how good Shields are!
@@cRPGBro ok, thanks
Can u still get 100 guard boost
Yes, it is achieved in this video with Fingerprint + Scholar's Shield spell.
Do you know if there's any other shields or ways to get 100
@@rudolphsdestiny5034 You can still use Barricade Shield with Shields that have at least 70 to achieve 100 under the effect duration.
However you have to activate it a lot of times since it's only 5s per activation.
What about the great shield tailsmen
@@rudolphsdestiny5034 It's not needed with Scholar's Shield or Barricade Shield & the best Shields, especially as it was nerfed in the most recent Patch.
It's better for the early game where you still have Shields with lower Guard Boost.
TY
You're welcome and thank you for the comment 😀
I tried so hard to find “shoot” but no luck 😞
