Motorcycle averaged 37 miles per hour or 60 kph based on 4km track length and 4 minute time....37mph is not real impressive sounding is it? So the car was 6% faster? so 66 ish kph? So 41ish mph....still not mind blowing speed. The thing that really hampers a motorcycle on that section is all the damn ROCKS....skinny tires and rock strewn terrain dont jibe well ....had that been like groomed surface with 17" super moto wheels? I think the bike could have beat the car or at least would have been close IMHO....
As soon as a saw the conditions of the road I knew it would be the truck. All that loose over hard pack makes traction very difficult for bikes to corner and accelerate. The AWD and 4 wheels is a big advantage in those conditions.
One of the few terrains where 4 wheels wins. More technical terrain would have tilted the tables significantly. The dirtbike was traction limited on the loose rocks. You put any kind of boulders or trees in the way and a dirtbike smokes anything.
Thinking the same thing. Going into corners with loose rocks and a cliff edge would temper any rider. Very hard to get traction on the way out as well.
Rubbish.. cars are ALWAYS quicker if corners are involved.. Look at every racetrack in the world.. I've had so many idiot bike riders tell me they're quicker than me and my Evo.. I've never lost yet.. Bike is only faster in a straight line, and in today's age a lot of cars are becoming much quicker..
A four stroke rally bike would have been faster than the bike they used. Still, that rider kept it really close on that two stroke that was struggling to keep the rear wheel hooked up.

Enjoyed this as I have done the pass in winter and enjoyed a beer or two in the pub. Amazing scenery and enjoyed the snow at the top, scary to think how quick these two did this.
I don't think so. You could let him ride a LC4/690 tuned to 90 hp and he would still loose. It's the traction, not the engine power that decides the race.

@@renameduser1312how does sitting in a roll cage with 4 wheel drive and a wide stance require more skill? There are no doubt some very good car drivers, and some do things bikes can’t do. Rally for example I believe requires more skill than most sports, including most motorcycle sports, although that is because they are competing against the times of other cars only which are faster, not bikes. Although if we compare a bike and a car on a track getting the same lap time, bikes are 10x more difficult, because you are always trying to keep from falling over. Try riding a motorcycle fast, you’ll see what I mean. I can drive my car and slam on the brakes and do a u turn in the rain offroad even if I have never raced in my life, and I probably won’t get hurt. You can’t do that on a motorcycle.
Reposted Comment: In my humble opinion the bike would be on the back end of it all the way. Firstly we have a single traction/drive source versus four on the Dakar buggy. Add to that the loose gravel sand and rocks. It's a no brainer. Put the same kind of power down on a race track in similar power to weight ratios, the bike will most certainly take it...WELL IF the track has sweeping corners to add to the argument. If the race track has sharp bends, a race car has once again far more going for it through corners than the bike which has the rider coming in hard on the brakes before accelerating again. To prove the point there is a video I think with a Lambo and a superbike around Monza, and the car took the flag. This to me is more like a publicity stunt for RedBull and the Toyota Dakar truck. Well anyhow, a great video and great action from both Geniel and Wade. I remember doing a stint around Zwartkops with Geniel once many moons ago in a Nissan 350Z.... Pooofff the years had gone by, but Geniel still has the edge!

Its unreal at how quick they actually did this, took me if I remember correctly about 45 minutes from the border post in winter. Low range all the way because the road was very slippery towards the top.

Watching it 3x, I do see the cycles limitations. 2 stroke is just fine, but a bigger displacement would even it up (and win) Lighter is always better. The rocks/traction put him down. The dude putting down the boot beer is a hero. You take your chances, and you pay your price... like a real man.
Thought the difference was going to ve bigger. But congrats to wade for doing it, not just because he is a hard enduro rider, but also he was on a two-stroke. Different story would have been if you put Josep Garcia in a 350 or 450 up that mountain. But at least we have an entertaining video.

But for more displacement and keeping momentum over corners 4 strokes are waaaay better. Why do you think they use them in any type of open desert, XC or motocross race??? That type of engine works better in open type of racing or riding. Before comenting things without sense try the bikes and use you logics on why pros use them in each type of discipline
I agree. While 300cc 2 strokes are kings of hard enduro/tight woods trails, a 450 MX bike can't be beat for a challenge like this. A 450 MX bike would eat that hill for lunch and probably gap that truck by 10 seconds or better. Props to the truck driver though, I think he's dealing with much greater consequences if he makes an error.

It should have been a race to the top, and free for both which way to take up there. I am not familiar with the venue, but I would suspect the hard enduro rider could do some impressive hillclimb-stunt to cut corners and arrive at the top even faster than when limited to follow the road up...
Haven driven and ridden such roads in the American PNW, I expected this result, loose big rocks are sooooo destabilizing for a bike. Gravel or sand might help, but tighter turns, skinnier trails, or big boulders that a car would have to rock climb over but a bike could hop over or go around would help the bike for sure
Sani pass isnt that bad a road unless you drive it like that. It is THE ROAD up into eastern Lesotho and they take two wheel drive trucks up it and usually make it. Yes, the ZA guard gate will allow locals in 4x2 through, despite the 4x4 only sign for tourists like us. The only issue you may have in a 4x4 is when meeting oncoming traffic, it can be a narrow squeeze to get by.
Very skilful bike rider, but both that bike and its rider are more suited to slower, tougher going then that. Perhaps next time have rally bike v rally car. And one of the big twins from back in the day (Yamaha or KTM) could have wiped the floor with the truck

VERY cool!! Its not 2 wheels vs 4, its 4 wheel drive vs 1. Not a huge surprise. Those giant Baja tires can make boulders into marbles. A few less mini boulders and a few more tighter turns and the bike may have had a better shot.
Admiration for the abilities of both of these guys, no arguments. Not many would be as good as they, but any dope can go balls out up a hill. Should have sent them both down the hill to make better use of their talent.

I would agree with other viewers that this is not a fair comparison. You should have placed a Dakar Rally rider on his Dakar Rally bike against a Dakar Rally Car. Motocross and Dakar Rally are two completely different disciplines with different motorcycles.
I know nothing about Rally but I honestly thought that the bike would have had a bigger advantage in the corners. The bike just could not overcome the displacement. That rally car was pretty impressive. Very cool to watch. I would like to see more scenarios like this.
It's not about power or displacement. The bike can't be stable on the corners, and doesn't have that much power on straight line. So it has no advantage at all. With a rally bike, wich are 4 stroke, you have more traction and therefore stability, and you can also go way faster since rally bikes usually have a longer gearing.
That's true. Flat corners are slippy on a bike. Probably was not even fair in the power to weight ration either. That car had so much power. But it was still cool to watch. @@motofunk1
A 700cc adventure bike would have been a more accurate comparison as far as power to weight and especially top speed. The 300 is probably topping out at 60 or 70 on the straights depending on the gearing but a 700 would have no problem hitting 90+ on dirt with a good rider.

I've been up that road a few times on a dirtbike and a 4x4. Scary on a bike trying to go as fast as you can😅

Pushing the limits on a racetrack with air balloons on the corners is scary and hairy. This thousand foot drop stuff is madness.

It’s not a displacement issue, it’s a traction issue, especially corner traction.
What would have helped the bike more than additional power is some goods ruts or banked corners. A bike doesn't have a lot of grip on a flat corner.

A 700cc adventure bike would have been a more accurate comparison as far as power to weight and especially top speed. The 300 is probably topping out at 60 or 70 on the straights depending on the gearing but a 700 would have no problem hitting 90+ on dirt with a good rider.
