I think it's very difficult to define who's the greatest, but Nijinsky is definitely on the short list.

Why was Lester Piggott not on Nijinsky in this race

Liam Ward was Vincent O'Brien's stable jockey at the time ; he was retained to ride Nijinsky in all his Irish races ( in fact , Ward never lost a race on the horse ) . Under an agreement , Lester Piggott would ride Nijinsky in all other countries - England & France , as it turned out . Piggott lost twice on Nijinsky in his last two races .

Stable jockey, Liam Ward, rode all O'Brien's horses in Ireland. Piggott rode the runner-up here, Meadowville...

So we take from that then that Liam Ward was a better jockey than Lester Piggott! Haha

@@shaunhalliwell5766 No , we do not take nothing of the sort from that except that Piggott , a far superior jockey , was freelance by the time he rode Nijinsky , whereas Ward was the retained stable jockey of Vincent O'Brien , and was under contract to ride the best O'Brien horses when they raced in Ireland .
