EMD BL2: A Streamlined Branchline Diesel

  • Electro-Motive Division's BL2 is quite the unique little diesel. It was EMD's first attempt at a road-switcher, competing with ALCO, Baldwin, and Fairbanks-Morse. It's not very well known compared to others, but the impact it had on EMD was actually quite significant. This branchline locomotive, while unpopular with the railroads, proved to be a stepping stone to something far greater and successful in diesel locomotive production.

Sorry about the long wait between videos recently. I've been rather busy lately and a lot of factors prevented me from getting this out sooner. Bi-weekly uploads will likely be more common going forward not only because of me being busy, but also I'm able to spend more time on videos and relax more between uploads. Regardless I hope you enjoy the video, the BL2 deserves more fans!

Honestly, as a Dane this is a bit hillarious because we do have an American streamliner model here that was specifically designed for branch lines but which actually resembles streamliners.
For context in 1954 DSB received the very first Nohab AA16 models, designated at DSB as "MY" class locomotives. Nohab (also known as Nydquist & Holm Aktiebolaget) had won a contract to build licensed versions of EMD's locomotives with EMD prime movers for the European market. The AA16 was a direct adaption of the EMD F7 for the European market with DSB has the launch customer. DSB continued to order many throughout the 50's, but by the end of the decade they made a request for Nohab. To develop a version of the locomotive with a lighter axle load, 16,5 tonnes per axle max, for use on DSB's various branch lines with low axle weight allowance. The result was the Nohab AA12, or "MX" class. 45 of these were delivered between 1960 and 61, exclusively to DSB. They featured an axle weight of 16 tonnes across 6 axles and featured a slightly weaker 12 cylinder prime mover but otherwise were nearly identical to the MY's.
Today several MY's and MX's are still in regular service across Denmark, Sweden, and Germany on freight trains and special duties like rolling stock transfers, driver training, maintenance trains, snowplowing, and more.

The Southern almost purchased the BL2, and even went as far as to have paint diagrams drawn up for the units, but they were ultimately passed on in favor of the GP7. Ireland also considered getting a 5' gauge, high hood, A1A-A1A version of the BL2 but the decision ultimately fell through.

I like the BL2. I think it's an attractive unit compared to the far more successful and utilitarian GP7. Now that being said the GP7's were/are legendary for many reasons but not for their looks. Although of the two i'd probably pick the GP7 if I had to ever work on it myself.

The Bangor and Aroostook would have continued to use their fleet of BL-2's and F3A's into the 90's, however several batches of surplus exConrail GP38's were acquired and forced them into retirement. Unlike most railroads, the Bangor and Aroostook overhauled all of their units every 3 years from the ground up, so the F3's and BL2's they retired were still in very good shape. The railroad more or less tried to give the remaining units away, offering them as camps to shop employees, however no one took them up on the offer. In the end three BL-2's were sold off, one was donated, while two F3's were sold off. Originally the group buying the F3's wanted I think it was the 49 (built from a destroyed F3 and a destroyed BL2), however there was a miscommunication and the unit was scrapped. So the railroad offered another one to the groups as a replacement. The railroad kept F3A, 42 and backdated it to the as delivered appearance for the 100th anniversary of the railroad. After the Iron Road purchase and bankruptcy, the renumbered 42 (502) was transferred to the Montreal Maine and Atlantic who stripped it of components and traction motors. It was sold after the MMA bankruptcy to the Central Maine and Quebec. Originally they offered it up for $1, but decided to keep it. The intent was to repaint and overhaul it in 2020 for use as a OCS/ tourist service unit from there on out. However, CMQ was sold in late 2019 to CP, and the plans were never followed through. Currently the 502 is enroute to Calgary where it will be stuffed and mounted, unlikely to see service again. Which is ironic, because CP refuses to sell it since it represents the heritage of the Bangor and Aroostook. Which at the same time, they are trying to sell off all remaining Bangor and Aroostook track.

As a die hard FEC fan always liked the BL2 (they had 6) and C&O, my hometown road favorite had 14 thanks to PM, 2 of which handled the Louisville branch of the "George Washington" for several years in the early '50s.
Even tho the BL2 had heavier frame than the prototype it was still recommended that they should only lead in multiple unit lash ups. PM 84 retired early due to frame cracks and the long lived West Maryland units were repaired several times until kept out of multiple unit road lash ups.

Despite only having 14 units, the C&O/PM units came either with or without steam generators and some even had the extra gyralight. Even though WM and BAR seemed determined to keep their BL-2s running forever, it appears other railroads like B&M, MP, C&EI, RI, and even C&O were looking to trade theirs in for other engines (B&M and MP for GP-18s, C&EI for GP-35s, and C&O for GP-30s)

BL-2's 52 and 56 Were Here in Green Bay Wisconsin at the NATIONAL RAILROAD MUSEUM from 2001 until 2008; donated by the WSORR Shortline at the Janesville Roundhouse and Formerly owned by late Mr. Glen Monheart as the well known collector. 52 was painted 🎨 Orange 🍊 for his own shortline J.&S.W. RR. that you see in tjus photo 📸!! But 56 was still in a very rusted Blue paint 🎨 from the B.&A. RR.in Maine. When parked at the NRRM they were the real and true representatives of the early to mid 1950s era that includes the ROCK ISLAND 2 "AEROTRAIN " with unique bulbous nose diesel and 2 bus styled coaches!! Since 1966!! (and st. Louis has their AEROTRAIN 3).Yet the 2 BL2's were also delivered in July 2001 along with the 3 EMD F7 A.B.A. sets from the WICT RR numbers 106a//106b// from the Milwaukee Road// including 901 from the D&RGW in Colorado yet suffering mechanical failures in 901. Plus ➕ I have the 35mm photos 📸 with night 🌙 photographs of these 5 diesels sitting on the Museum delivery track at the old CNW RR at M.P. 239 at the old Sugar Factory sidings. Then both photos and digital inside the NRRM when parked next to AEROTRAIN 2.
But, ideally the NRRM should have fixed a BL2 to run trips on their short and tiny circle of track.
Yet the NRRM new manager in 2008 was very rude because he and the large Board Sold 7 diesels!!!!!!!(7). And he also Forcefully Evicted the H.O. model railroad club inside the HOOD JUNCTION DEPOT since 1989; by rebuilding the Depot as a childrens activity center????? But the H.O. CLUB was Forced to find a new location in the library basement in east depere!!!
The 2 Bl2s were sold to the New York shortline and they were rebuilt for both freight and excursions and with many videos 📹 on RUclips.
Sadly 😥 the New York shortline was closed; yet the 2 BL2's were sold to Ohio, for their excursions; CONGRATULATIONS 🎊 ❤!!
Yet the 3 F7 aba were sent to Escanaba Michigan yet sitting outside for the past 16 years in the severe cold 🥶 weather in winter blizzards ☃️❄🌬🌨!!!!!
Sadly they also SCRAPPED AND DESTROYED THE LARGE MILWAUKEE ROAD 38A E9AM from the Chicago area, and with several triplet siblings like 37a at the Union Illinois museum but sadly they wont ever run together....both 37a and 38a were very rusty yellow the skilled volunteers can run it; but 38a in the NRRM was stripped of parts!! AND SCRAPPED!!!!!
The next diesel that disappeared from the NRRM was the G.E. 44 TONNER from the paper mill; yet originally the S.P.U.D. Station switcher from Minneapolis!!
Sadly 😢during the past 40 years since 1980 the NRRM has lost 37 engines and cars and coaches.
Previously they had a total of 93 trains: this was only 7 away from 100 trains, that was a GRAND AND NOBLE GOAL!!
SADLY the NRRM has shrunken to only 56 pieces. But a few others have been added.
And Sadly, many of the Lost trains were part of the very beginning in 1961.
    Very Sad 😢 INDEED!!!!!
    FRI. MARCH 22, 2024A.D.

Get yourself a used Life-Like HO scale BL-2 locomotive in running condition, the semi-modern one with eight wheel drive, not the older four wheel drive model, and you will be in possession of not only a smooth running, highly detailed and powerful locomotive, but the chassis and drivetrain are minimum maintenance, reliable, and long lasting. I have two and they, along with either a Geep or an F unit, are assigned to the snow plow train in winter to clear the outdoor part of my railroad. I have never had any issues with the BL-2s running outside, but some of my other locomotives haven't fared as well. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

I used to hate Bl2 and barely know about, but since I watched that video I realized that BL2 DOES have potential.

The Charger is ugly though. The streamlined variants for Brightline and VIA are ok, but the standard Chargers are just hideous.

IMO, the EMD F-units remain the best-looking locomotives ever built. The early Amtrak locomotives were among the worst, looking as though the designer was preciously fired from Winnebago.

I thinks its odd appearance can attributed to how it was designed and intended to work as both a switcher and a passenger locomotive, hence the interesting carbody design, which don't exactly go hand and hand most of the time-

The BL2 looks - to my european eyes - SO much better. I don't get it. The GP-types look just like a block. This one has some nice curves

The BL2 is one of the best looking diesels ever created in my opinion. In fact, it's possibly my favorite EMD (although F-Units are so classic, idk). I refer to BL2s as "Dogface". Not sure if I'm the only one who sees that.

Have you considered a video about the experimental electrics that were built after WW2? For example, the E3b,E2c, GM6c and the GM10b.

Ugly? You wanna talk ugly, talk British steam locos! Now those are UGLY! BL 2’s are handsome locos born of beautiful F unit parents. It takes a looong time for RS’s, GP’s and SW’s to grow on ya before they can even be called “plain-looking.” And GE units can best be described as “pug-faced.”
