  • SCORE MASTERS is a birthday celebration of composers John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, curated with The Legacy of John Williams and The Goldsmith Odyssey. This video was originally hosted on the Ipswich Film Theatre (IFT) RUclips page. Following the IFT's rebrand as King Street Cinema the video has moved here. We're proud to have reached 7,000 views on the original page and are happy to continue access to this incredible discussion.
In this exclusive roundtable celebrating the work of film composers John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial) and Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen, Planet of the Apes, Total Recall), we are joined in discussion by some of the most creative and talented artists working in the field: Academy Award®-nominated composer David Newman (Galaxy Quest, Ice Age, Anastasia), Grammy® award-winning conductor Leonard Slatkin (Music Director Laureate of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra), legendary music recording engineer Bruce Botnick (known for his work with The Beach Boys and The Doors, as well as both Williams and Goldsmith), soundtrack record producer Michael Matessino (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Harry Potter: The John Williams Soundtrack Collection), writer and journalist Jeff Bond (Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Art and Visual Effects, Danse Macabre: 25 Years of Danny Elfman and Tim Burton), composer Leanna Primiani, and pianist/keyboardist Mike Lang, both of whom have worked with Williams and Goldsmith!
This is a treat for anybody interested in the convergence of film and music, and the unique legacy of two of cinema's most accomplished artists.
The event is moderated by Maurizio Caschetto (The Legacy of John Williams), Yavar Moradi & W. David Lichty (The Goldsmith Odyssey) and Tim Burden (Board member of the Film Music Foundation).
IFT Director, Daniel Champion, said “We are delighted to launch SCORE MASTERS with such an esteemed panel of award-winning and talented musicians, producers and journalists. Commencing this new strand of programming for the Ipswich Film Theatre with a celebration of two of cinema’s greatest musical voices and to be discussing their legacy with such a respected panel of their creative colleagues is a tremendous honour.”

A couple of thoughts regarding both composers overlapping careers: Richard Donner wanted Jerry to score "Superman" after their successful collaboration with "The Omen." Because of a commitment to Attenborough's "Magic," the scheduling didn't work out, so John got the job. It was his follow-up from "Star Wars" & cemented his legendary status. In a twist of fate, Jerry was commissioned to score "Supergirl" years later & I always wondered if a Goldsmith Superman theme would have been similar.
Interesting to hear Newman explain how John made the ominus opening visuals of "ET" into something wondrous when Jerry had done the EXACT OPPOSITE with the opening of "Alien."
The Williams walkout from the Boston Pops following pushback from some of the players opposing the film scores taking over the repertoire is still discussed. I guess there were some circles where you could hear a pin drop when BSO Music Dir. Seiji Ozawa appointed Williams to replace a retiring & beloved Arthur Fiedler. I've only heard of one other time when he walked out in frustration & that was when he met "Superman 2 & 3" director Richard Lester. I don't know what prompted it, but Williams stormed out after a few moments exclaiming like "I'm never going to work with that man!" Yikes!
The direct influence these two had on future composers & musicians is extraordinary. It's often recalled how the late James Horner sat in on Jerry's scoring sessions for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," (presumably because he wanted to date his daughter) & would later himself compose a career-defining score for "Star Trek II."
Fascinating video! I loved every minute!
