I was fortunate enough to Interview his son Joel Goldsmith for my Podcast back in 2008 .. And Joel was awesome at telling me lots of stories of working with Jerry on some of his films. Jerry is my idol and a huge inspiration on my own music. He was, and still is .. the best!
And I remember going to Jerry Goldsmith’s 75th birthday concert in London at the barbican hall .. with the LSO. Sadly Jerry was too I’ll to travel but Dirk Bruge did a fantastic job of conducting for Jerry .. and that was the first time I’d heard Jerry’s music played live. Nothing beats hearing the ST:TMP theme by a full orchestra .. and the Gremlins suite.

This was a great interview! Jerry Goldsmith was one of the greats and he had so many interesting things to say! I appreciate that you let him speak and finish his thoughts; that seems to be a problem with many interviewers nowadays.

Damn this fantastic guy died to jung! Maybe in the future we talk about Jerry Goldsmith who are in the same level like classical composers of Mozart, Tschaikowski, Beethoven, Vivaldi etc.

Wow! Great interview. You asked such great questions. Different from so many other interviews. Jerry seemed to open up really well. he seemed so engaged here. I know some interviews it is like he hates doing interviews.

This interview is great and I love how Jerry talks about the function of a main theme in a score, one of the problems I had with his music for the later Star Trek films is he didn't use it quite as much, almost every track in Star Trek the motion picture had that theme in it somewhere but it only gets a few references in later films, ironically he fell into the same trap as John Williams of not using a theme enough. If I were to write the score to a Star Trek film, I would have Jerry's theme blasting multiple times.

While I agree he didn’t use the main theme as much in the TNG films, it was all over The Final Frontier. In TNG it became an ancillary theme, mainly for the concept of the enterprise. There were other main themes and motifs for those films that he spent the majority of those scores focus on, and they’re all over the place. I think the restrained placement and usage of the original theme was a good call in the later films. Basically for grandiose shots of the enterprise or to punctuate heroic moments that the ship engages in.

Interviewing Jerry was a huge thrill. I think I asked him some questions he might not have been asked before. Thanks for the comment. I work hard on these and so few people do comment. Dennis

Thanks. Coming from Indiana, being immersed in movie music and having been a cheerleader in two gyms where "Hoosiers" was filmed, gave me a head start. I tried NOT to be in awe of JG; it was not easy. Dennis

@@dennisdaily5463 I just listened to your interview with my “all time film composer hero”. Great stuff ! I love your interview. I really dig Jerry Goldsmith, study all his scores in depth... What fascinating times were back then ! I’m originally from Poland, and Jerry’s piano teacher Mr. Gimpel was also Polish. I knew about Gimpel even before I knew of Jerry Goldsmith. My piano teacher when I was a kid was always talking about great pianists. Gimpel was one of them :-) Currently I am analyzing Jerry’s scores for Thriller TV series from 1960s, one of his earliest music composition efforts.
