i really relate to this a lot! i’m 16, 5’5 120 pounds, and i always feel like they just smash past my guard. or they will just outmuscle me whenever i get in a decent position. i’ve only been doing this for a month so it’s expected obviously, but insight from someone similar to my size helps immensely!

I totally feel you. The good thing about being one of the smaller guys is that our technique has to be on point to pull stuff off especially vs the bigger opponents. Though in order to get there, we're going to be the nail 95% of the time (or more)! Haha!

I'm also 115 lbs, 5'3", blue belt. Training for 5 years (4 years White belt and 1 year as a blue belt). I'm always the smallest in the team and always being smashed by bigger guys and I'm thankful for that. I sucked at take downs but I somehow develop my sweeps from guard and I'm always taking their back.

Totally agree with you! I am super thankful that I'm the smallest guy and get smashed daily by the bigger guys. I feel like our jiu jitsu/technique needs to be on point in order to really pull things off. There's a lot less room for error since we can't muscle it. And I'm also now learning that getting to the back is key for the smaller guy!
      Appreciate the support my friend!

Great tips. I'm only in my second week of jiu jitsu so my experience so far is probably normal regardless, but I'm 4'11" 95lbs, so I'm the smallest one there. Even the 12 year olds are bigger than me. At this point I don't have technique hardly at all obvious, but it seems that anyone bigger than me easily stays on top when I try to shrimp, buck, etc. and extremely easily flips me if I'm upright at all. I'm totally ok with practicing mostly in defense as I mostly am learning for self defense, but it is frustrating when I see other girls who started at the same time already submitting other girls. Technique is where it's at, I'll have to talk to my instructor about practicing more of that outside of rolling.

Recently got my blue belt and same boat as you at 127, curious what you suggest for techniques/guards to work on. I have a general idea and attacks/sweeps from each. However have you found a certain game that has worked for our body type? Thanks!

im 5'7 140 pound blue belt and im EASILY the smallest person in my gym. Getting smashed every day sucks but like you said my defense from bottom has gotten pretty good but since im on bottom all the time my top game has suffered.

Hi. Just curious how long you've been training BJJ. It's pretty rare for me to meet someone that's your/our weight. Even the kids (aka teens) in my classes are bigger than me. (I'm 110 lbs, female, blue belt.) It's most definitely about survival for us. As Helio, Rener & Ryron Gracie would say, "jiu jitsu is the art. If you survive/didn't get submitted, you won."

@Oliverisloved I've been training for about 2 years. And I totally agree. It's definitely challenging to find people our size. I've luckily found a few training partners that are and we usually stick together when it comes to drills especially and always partner up when rolling comes around!

I’m 5,6 around 130lbs and I’ve been training around 8 months, but I got frustrated because a guy came into the gym who’s never trained before and he’s around 6,3, 200lbs a real big guy, and he just smashed me over and over, it’s frustrating because I have more technique and been training hard for 8 months and he just smashed me with strength

This still happens to me to this day! I'm also the same size as you (5'5", 130 lbs). The good news is that us little guys get used to getting smashed that it really sharpens our technique!
