A Great Guard in BJJ for Short People or Short Legs

  • What's the best Guard for a shorter person with strong thick legs?
    This is the question I received from a White Belt who is a short powerlifter and has some super strong legs.
    Her issue is that when she plays her BJJ game from the bottom she has trouble getting the positions and techniques to work for her.
    In my experience with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as someone who has shorter legs for his height, and as someone who has found themselves against people 300+ on more than 1 occasion.
    Full guard is generally not going to be the most idea position for someone with shorter legs.
    Personally, Half Guard became my go to Guard in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu almost as soon as I began getting exposed to it.
    The advantage the Half Guard gives to someone with short legs or who is much smaller than their opponent.
    Is. . .
    1. You only have to get your legs around 1 leg! Not their entire waist.
    2. Being smaller or more stocky. It's a position in Brazilian Jiujitsu that favors a more compact build.
    So if you're having issues with full guard and you're on the shorter / stockier side, or maybe you're opponent is just much bigger.
    Than try using the BJJ Half Guard. This will probably open up options to Butterfly Guard and X Guard in the future as well.
    In the video I show an entry into the Half Guard from Mount.
    Hope the video helps!

      As a dude with a similar body type (short, strong legs and an average torso) but a little taller, thanks for asking the question that led to this video.

    This is gold for me! Ty! I’m 5’5” 155 with stocky short legs. My regular guard is so easy for most people to break, I’m sure this takes practice but I can’t wait to try it.

    I am so glad I found this video. As a small beginner I am getting so frustrated attempting to hold full guard on all of my bigger more experienced training partners. I really don't feel I am learning anything from rolling because I am continually being squashed even if I manager to get into "good" positions like full guard. I think it's time I just accepted what is a "good" position for someone bigger and more powerful isn't neccessarily going to suit me.

    X Guard, reverse de la riva, half guard, butterfly guard, deep half.... Thats my whole guard game as a 85 kilo guy who is pretty short 1.70 meters. You will get so easy under people it's hilarious. Oh, and you will get many takedowns

    • @grapplingbuddy2418
      @grapplingbuddy2418 4 года назад +2

      @@clumsypotato2065 to be fair, being short legged in my opinion for rubberguard is the same as being short legged for triangles. You can get it to work, but it is harder and you have to play it differently!

    I'm 5'6 and pulling guard is like death to me a lot of the time unless the person is just as tall as me or if I'm not injured currently injured at the moment but besides that but this is extremely helpful I have try to escape now doing the foot thing and grabbing their hand and just kind of bridging which is great to do but going against people in your class they know exactly what you're going to do so they counter it but I like this one because it's more safe proof and harder to counter in my opinion

    Half guard is way underrated. I know a ton of BJJers that treat half guard as just the place between full guard and getting passed, and they singlemindedly defend against side control or full mount passes while trying to reassert full guard. Simultaneously, the guy on top is almost totally dedicated to the pass, rarely attacking (unless you do something stupid) and often not particularly concerned about getting swept or subbed. So one of the best reasons to focus on half guard, in my experience, is because so few other people even think about it. It's not treated as a position, it's treated as an obstacle between two different positions, which is, at least in my view, technically incorrect.

    • @grapplingbuddy2418
      @grapplingbuddy2418 5 лет назад

      Half guard is if you play it right an agressive guard, it's even more agressive than closed guard. Imagine all those sweeps that are there, even the half guard kimura is there

      Skilled blue belts can have years of experience and a wealth of knowledge to share. He might have a decade of grappling experience outside of the BJJ belt system. I would not abandon a gym that I was otherwise happy at simply because of the official rank of an instructor.
      You should also check out other gyms anyway, because they are nearly always inviting and testing your grappling vs new people is great for everyone involved.

    Beck I've never been shown anything like that. I just get men deliberately trying to overpower me and undermine me. Nobody not even the coaches adapt it for by body size. They just wrestle with me and try to overpower me. It often feels like they just wanna show me who's boss rather than try to help me. I don't mean to brag but I have got skill and it feels like they just want to put me down for it and undermine me. They make me feel like sh1t.
