This is honestly the best of the many tutorials I've watched! I think there are many other people besides me who would be very happy if you would make another video about the rest of the song. I haven't been able to find anything like that on RUclips yet. In any case, you have already helped me immensely, so thank you very much for that!
This is a brilliant video, I've watched several tutorial videos for this song, but this is hands down the best explanation of how to get the strum pattern and pressure just right. Thanks 👍🏻
Thanks a lot. This Video was really helpful. I have always played wonderwall with the standard strumming pattern and would not have thought, that this would make such a great difference.😊
Desi I teach guitar and I have a pet peeve of people making guitar lessons on songs that are watered down or completely wrong on RUclips. You are one of the exceptions. You nailed this awesome job I use your diagrams for my students for this song. Just wanted to say thank you and I wanted to ask what software you use to slow down/isolate he guitar part.
Thanks Desi I struggle with understanding which way to strum on most songs, what about hotel Cali or any Bowie or beetles songs? I really enjoy the theory podcasts and have bought your book. Would be cool if there was an audio version of your book to listen to on the go, just an idea!
Hey Desi again awesome job with this was wondering if you could do the same with the chord progression at the end. All I have is the rhythm slashes. It’s Rhy Fig 2 on sheet music direct. I think I have it but wanted to see what you do with it. Love your recent HL and the News stuff and Mixolydian Mode just curious where you found those tabs I never can find much for those guys. I grew up in the 80’s and were huge back then. Thanks again. Steve
I could go over the rest of Wonderwall with you in a private lesson. desiserna.as.me/schedule.php I found some Huey Lewis tabs in the paid version of ultimate-guitar.com then filled in the rest by ear.
This is just the verses, and all of the verses are very similar, just a little variation here and there from what I show you. Once you learn it, stop thinking about it, and just play. You're likely going to add some of your own variation naturally.
I've noticed multiple tutorial videos list different strumming patterns for this song. Shouldn't there be an objectively correct pattern based on the recording?
The strum pattern is not played exactly the same way each time. What I present here is definitely one of the variations you hear in the song. Once you get the general idea, you can play it with some of your own feel and variation.
Hi Desi, I've been listening to your podcast for a long time (and I own your two fretboard theory books), but this is the first video of yours that I have watched. I have a question about the beats for this. I know there should be 16 beats, but when I count I get 17. I'm counting the pause after you switch to the A7 as a beat. Is that right?
The rhythm here is based on 16th note subdivisions but that doesn't mean you play on every 16th note beat. For example, the rhythm in the first measure is counted 1 + 2 +a 3e+ 4 +a. Depending on your current level, you may be getting ahead of yourself thinking about this. See my book Guitar Rhythm and Techniques For Dummies to learn more about counting sixteenth notes. Im not sure man. Was just listening to the RUclips version of wonderwall at .75 speed and it doesn't sounds like it starts with 4 down in a row! Im a total novice though.
This is not the correct way to play it. But it's how most people play it. And almost every published book gets it wrong - and because the books gets it wrong, then people get it wrong. There is no strum on the 2-e-and in the first bar - so the strum on the 2nd downbeat must be a dotted 8th-note.
Listen carefully to the original recording and you'll hear the guitarist strum down strokes on "2 and" sometimes. As I mentioned in my video, there is variation throughout the song, and what I teach is a basic form of the pattern.

How does it only have 45k views?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Is it the same pattern in the whole song? Also in the chorus?

what is that program you used at the beginning to slow down the strumming?

My lesson here is a composite of the general strum pattern played throughout. You will hear some variation in the recording.
This is not the correct way to play it. But it's how most people play it. And almost every published book gets it wrong - and because the books gets it wrong, then people get it wrong. There is no strum on the 2-e-and in the first bar - so the strum on the 2nd downbeat must be a dotted 8th-note.
