I often feel like when it comes to racial humor or gay humor or really any kind of humor about a specific group that a lot of times the people that the jokes are about are able to laugh about it and think it’s funny. Where people who aren’t a part of that group tend to want to feel offended on their behalf. And it’s mostly good intentioned to want to feel that way in behalf of that group. It’s a weird dichotomy where everyone means well but like the people that are the brunt of the joke can laugh at themselves. @@Shoofyou10 "Where people who aren’t a part of that group tend to want to feel offended on their behalf." I just want to clarify that I didn't feel offended. Obviously the black people who were involved in that scene were okay with it and that's cool with me. But that scene wasn't my cup of tea because when it comes to humour about a group of people, I will always prefer that it is coming FROM someone that belongs to said group, because (and to quote you) "The people that the jokes are about are able to laugh about it and think it's funny." and that's why I'm able to enjoy it in those instances.
@@kaiielle I understand where both you and @Shoofyou10 are coming from, but I have to disagree with the notion that black people were "the brunt of the joke" in this scene. While racist terminology was used, black people were definitely not the target of the joke: the target was Randal and his ignorance. Now, if we learned that Randal knew what that term meant and used it anyway, then the scene doesn't work: the humor is gone and it's just Randal being a racist. Instead, they went out of their way to establish that Randal genuinely didn't know the term had any racial connotations. From there, they used Randal's ignorance to make fun of the way some people hand wave away the racists things the older generations say until it got so blatantly racist that even Randal couldn't deny it anymore. It also mocked how some people get so stubborn about changing the words they use, even once they learn these words are, at best, deeply problematic. I fully understand if the humor was based on mocking people of a different race or creed. However, in this case, the humor was used to mock the ignorant white dude, all while keeping it relatively light by establishing his behavior is based on ignorance instead of malice. With that all said: "baby, you can't taste racism!" is still one of my favorite lines from the movie.

Not because I find racism to be funny. (Unless we’re talking about something Blazing Saddles, where the point is to put a magnifying glass up to racism and show how stupid and ignorant it is) But in the context that the scene was done, it works. I also don’t feel like Wanda Sykes, a outwardly gay, Black-American woman and Earthquake would have signed on to be a part of the movie, if they didn’t find it to be funny, themselves.

The best part of that whole sequence is that it is the actual reason Rosario took her role! She read that scene, and immediately got her agent on the phone.
I absolutely loved your take on clerks 2. You really got into it like i have but had your own love of certain parts. You went along with the reaction and didn't jump the gun ever. I came wait to see you watch clerks 3
I recently watched Jersey Girl for the first time on Netflix after avoiding it for so long because of the backlash it got Honestly i think it might be one of Kevin Smith best movie Its very genuine.
Hello there. I had the pleasure of seeing a special midnight screening of this film at my local independent cinema here in San Jose, CA. What I loved about this film was that it represented my generation. CLERKS was my twenties. With this film, it was as my thirties, like Dante and Randall. It dealt with what my generation was dealt with: still working at low grade jobs, dealing with getting older, wondering what we’re doing with our lives, what the future will bring us, the idea of love and marriage in our thirties, etc. The whole film resonated with me and the audience, because it was a mirror of us-dealing with topical and social issues. And yes, I am Generation X, we loved this film, including the “Interspecies erotica” scene.
I got to meet Rosario about 2 weeks after the movie came out. She was so energetic and like a living cartoon (her words) and her eyes and smile truly makes you melt. It's no surprise why Kevin wanted to cast her as Becky.
My first entry into the world of Kevin Smith thanks to the Donkey Show scene being all over RUclips at the time and obviously led to me starting the Askewniverse about 10 years ago now. So the next movie officially is Jay and Silent Bob Reboot however Kevin has now stated that Zack and Miri is now part of the Askewniverse due to a certain character appearing in both movies so that is definitely worth a watch next
The customers at the end of the movie are some of the same customers from the first clerks. One is kevins friend Walt who played several roles in the first clerks. The milk lady at the end is Kev's mom! She was in both as the milk maid. The little girl that is briefly shown in the window (at 28:43) when Dante is driving around to 1979 is Kev's daughter Harley Quinn Smith. On a side note who didn't fall for Rosario Dawson in this?
19:03 Kaiielle trying to wrap her head around "Pillow Pants the Pussy Troll" is one of the best moments I've seen on any Reaction Channel.🤣 20:05 There is no argument....Han shot first. Special Edition Revisionist History does not count. 33:20 Yup, that was Clerks. She died at the beginning of Mallrats, which is why Brandi had to be on her Dad's game show (Mallrats actually takes place the day before Clerks). 37:07 Love that we get a bit of God on the soundtrack here.
I agree with pretty much your entire take. As a gen x person, I get a lot of Kevin Smith’s perspective. I appreciate his knack for pushing the boundaries of what’s appropriate and what’s offensive. I too could’ve gone without the donkey scene but it’s his movie and his choice. There is so much more to appreciate from this movie. Dante & Becky’s relationship was palpable and the highlight of this. Randall’s jail speech was very affecting and still chokes me up as it reminds me of past friendships. Choices made. Life. I look forward to your watching More KS flicks. I hope you do Jersey Girl and Zack & Miri. ✌🏻
The woman checking the milk is Kevin Smith's mother. The young girl waving in the window with the missing front teeth is Kevin's daughter. Emma is Kevin's wife The guy who covers his kid's eyes and says "Don't look at his wee wee" is producer Scot Mosier, who is a longtime friend of Kevin's. Also, I highly recommend watching the movie with the commentary tracks. There is some comedy gold in the first two. The technical one is more dry.
If you haven’t been watching these movies from the get-go, like some of us; one of the best ways to educate yourself and find out who all of these people are, is to watch the series Comic Book Men. You’ll get to see all the team players who have been there since day one.
I've loved this movie since I first saw it the theaters, in part because it mirrored my early 30s angst at the time. I mostly just LOL at Randall's absurdity. The hole Lord of the Rings hate rant is actually pulled from Kevin Smith's personal feelings about those movies. I've seen him monologue that same speech about walking on an interview show somewhere. Because of that I have a deep well of nostalgia that surrounds this movie as well as the entire View Askew Universe.
I know Rosario and she's actually a super awesome person. Her sense of humor is vey much in line with this movie. In fact the Donkey Show is the thing that got her to do the movie in the first place.
I saw this in theaters back in the day, oddly enough with a friend of mine from high school I had a crush on named Emma (and I work in fast food)... and ironically, day this is being posted I got to meet Kevin Smith at Montreal ComicCon. Very chill dude.
I love Clerks ll. I have a boxset dvd set. It came with a Mooby’s cup, lid Straw and a Mooby’s hat. I had Brian O’Halloran/Dante sign my Mooby’s hat. Such a cool person, very kind and takes time to talk to his fans. Last year I got to meet Kevin Smith/Silent Bob and Jason Mewes/Jay. Both are cool people and they take time to talk to their fans. I have a video of Jason racing a woman on a motorized wheelchair and he was on something similar racing her. The woman says I’m letting him win. It was a great moment to see. The little girl that is staring out the window and Dante is looking at her. That little girl is Kevin Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith. She was also the baby Silent Bob in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
If anyone here has ever seen the movie Flipped, which is a hidden gem by the way; The guy who plays the "LOTR Super Geek" in Clerks II is in that and shows much more depth in his acting ability, giving quite the performance. I saw C2 way before I saw Flipped and was definitely caught off guard.
It's kind of amusing that Rosario Dawson is your favorite part of this movie and the donkey show is what you hated most. Reason being: Kevin Smith and Rosario have both talked about how she decided to take the role after Kevin offered it to her. She was undecided while reading the script, but reading the donkey show part was what convinced her: she was so entertained by it and curious as to how Kevin would pull the scene off, that she signed on to the role. That means your favorite part of the movie only signed on because of the existence of your most hated part of the movie! Personally, I rank this movie as one of the best of the View Askewniverse: I still think the Pillow Pants scene is absolutely hilarious (not just the dialogue, but Randall's reaction and the ominous background music). That said: I totally get it if a lot of this movie's humor didn't work for you. Looking forward to your next Kevin Smith movie reaction!
Regarding the fandom bashing, while this was just getting rolling with the trolling back then with 30-somethings like Randall, consider that in the 18 years since kids have now grown up in the internet environment as something informing behavior rather than the unusually extreme comments and rudeness. So instead of liberating freedom to blast whatever you feel of past generations, its younger people not fearing any kind of reprisal to their obnoxiousness. I would be very interested in seeing internet trolls being as brash in person as Randall is here. Doubt it.
I have always liked this one better than the first Clerks. It's totally subjective, but this one feels like a better movie overall, like with better acting and a more narrative story. This sequel also affected me more, because a) it's more emotional than the first one, b) it has a happy ending, and c) Rosario Dawson is AMAZING in this film!
I definitely preferred the first, but it must be much, much harder watching this as a reactor. A bit like meeting someone and suggesting for your first date lets watch Clerks II at the cinema. You both have similar tastes, what could go wrong!!! For us, no reacting, we might like it a bit more now lol, great reaction, again
Randall was a case of emotional arrested development and he used his "humor" to keep people at a distance because he was insecure and afraid of being hurt and abandoned. It's a feedback loop of Randall treating people like crap to keep from getting hurt and getting hurt by people walking away from his behavior. The final choice to re-open the Kwik-Stop was a dysfunctional choice because it keeps Randall from emotionally growing. He basically got what he wanted: Dante stayed and he gets to run the Kwik-Stop. The best thing for Randal would've been for Dante to move so that Randall is shaken out of comfort zone and repeating pattern of dysfunction.
I really love this one. I laughed my ass off and thought it was outstanding. Still around this time, Jersey Girl I think might be Kevin Smith's best movie and Red State had the best acting in in any of his movies. They're worth a watch.
So I've been waiting for this reaction from you, because of Randall's rants now that, said I personally am In a wheelchair. So you would think I'd be offended as you should, BUT because it's coming from the most arrogant character I think it's really really funny. Even the star wars VS lord of the rings rant, again I love both equally found to be one of the funniest moments. And the racist names rant because it's a OMG moment and shocking even that's funny when it shouldn't be. Probably only thing I genuinely miss is the B&W throughout, I wish Kevin Smith made it a black and white trilogy. Just my take. Wait til you see clerks 3 different tone. Keep up your great work 🙂👍❤
fyi I have at least two friends who are like Randall in this movie. They were really annoying, just for the sake of getting a rise out of people. Since I learned long ago to keep my emotions in check to discourage gleeful teasing, they put extra effort into trying to get under my skin. I just took them at their word (calling their bluff) and walked away. To each their own. :)
Some of the best moments is when you get a bit of behind the scenes stuff. The bald guy had to break it to his mother that he got the job and that he would be the donkey efer.
He also had a younger sister who was still in school, and he told her that if it made her uncomfortable or would cause her trouble at school in any way, he wouldn't do the role... IIRC, she said something to the effect of "Do it!! It's f@#!in' hilarious!!"
Too many young men, myself included, saw Randalls behaviour and decided that was how to be cool and funny and totally missed the part where he opens up in the jail cell about why he's been acting like a total dick
K.... no spoilers.... BUT.... I'm going to warn you to have tissues at the ready for Clerks III. I will explain when you get there, but I'll just say that as much as I wanted to see it in theaters, I'm glad I didn't.... and leave it at that. It's a great movie, don't get me wrong. So, let that pique your interest in seeing it.
I saw Clerks 3 in one of the theatrical showings. I ugly cried. The whole room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop next door and it was a full house. Can confirm it was rough.
These kind of comments are a little rough for me, because I've had them before many times but then I don't end up crying during the movie and then I get hate for it. 🫠
15:00 - K.... I have a tale to tell relating to that particular scene.... but I can't tell it now, because.... "spoilers". 19:30 - K...... really? Didn't your parents tell you what they put in your body when you were young, to prevent you from having pre-marital sex? And if they didn't... how could you miss hearing the screams of your partner before your 21st birthday when engaging in such activities?! Or did you simply take delight in their pain and suffering?! (I hope you know I'm being facetious as Hell, right now, hoping to make you laugh) 34:40 - I said it during Clerks, and I'll say it again: Randal Graves is my spirit animal. I worked retail jobs long enough to know that, at some point, I became just like him... and long before year 2000.
@@kaiielle I honestly hope that you DON'T cry like I did during that movie. I cried hard (and I don't cry during movies except in extreme circumstances) during that movie, but it was because of a very personal connection to the plot (several, actually). Jersey Girl got such a bad rap, crushed under the whole Ben-ifer/Gigli thing. It's a really good movie, with an amazing performance by Carlin.
I recently watched Jersey Girl for the first time on Netflix after avoiding it for so long because of the backlash it got
Honestly i think it might be one of Kevin Smith best movie
Its very genuine.
Also, Red State and Zack & Miri Make A Porno.
Jersey Girl is by far his most ‘normal’ movie, and it’s good.
you should watch red state the other kevin smith horror film
It's crazy that I feel so nostalgic about this reaction. It's a mixed bag for sure but familiarity, love and friendship rule the day
The interactions between Randal and basically every other character is fantastic!
This movie is hilarious. Love the Jay and silent Bob characters 😂
"Someone that Kevin knew" 😂😂😂😂😂
HAHA I know. Totally forgot she is his mom.
19:03 Kaiielle trying to wrap her head around "Pillow Pants the Pussy Troll" is one of the best moments I've seen on any Reaction Channel.🤣
20:05 There is no argument....Han shot first.
Yes, My Name is Earl started in 2005 hence the mustache on Jason Lee.
This whole universe of movies is so nostalgic.
Yeah, Kevin Smith can do profound and profane in the same movie. Talented.
What I want to see is the faces of everyone behind the camera when Jay was doing Silence of the Lambs.
KL is so pretty. Always a joy to chill out with her.
Another cinematic donkey show gone humorously awry for you KL - Bachelor Party, with young Tom Hanks 😉
The best part is the squirming And the uncomfortable looks. Best one yet.
I would paint the roads and parking lots Rosario drives on.
Your face thru this entire reaction was priceless 😂😂😂
It's Jay and Silent Bob time!
I'm excited to rewatch all of these movies with the commentary!
Wait for the third, its a tough watch in the best way
I love Clerks ll. She was also the baby Silent Bob in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Your reactions we so good in this. We need more raunchy comedies, like American Pie! I'd upvote you more if I could!!! Keep being awesome
Calling it now 10 seconds in. This is going to be so fun it might make my day
Hey KL.. I was correct
Ahhh that's so fun!
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but the line about driving with a deployed airbag is a true story that happened to Jay.
And Quick Stop is still there today, owned by Kevin Smith. Sadly RST Video has closed down.
I'm 33, work in fast food and actively hate the direction my life is going. I have become Dante and Randal
For many years, I mistakenly thought Brian Cranston played the Sexy Stud.
The milk maid is Kevin's mom
Never seen the movie but I enjoyed the reaction
Also, I'm sure it's been mentioned, but the woman playing Mrs. Hicks is Kevin's wife.
Hayden Christensen is a good actor watch Shattered Glass. Nobody can talk about sand and be believable
That one is on my list! The only Hayden I've seen outside of Star Wars so far was Life as a House.
@@kaiielle Please forgive me to relating to so much of your interests, lol
But I LOVE Life As A House!
i kinda expected Jason Lee to order a "holy bartender" ..... if you know you know 😂
👍
Elias' excitement over the then-upcoming Transformers movie hits way different considering the series went downhill fast.
Not sure if yoy clocked it, but the scenes with Jay putting on lipstick and dancing naked is from Silence of the Lambs........
Great film.
Too many young men, myself included, saw Randalls behaviour and decided that was how to be cool and funny and totally missed the part where he opens up in the jail cell about why he's been acting like a total dick
He's referring to Helen Keller being dumb as in not able to talk
Next up in the Askewniverse, Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. It's worth a watch.
Rosario was in "Josie and the pussycats" 2001
I absolutely love this film. #PillowPants.
K.... no spoilers....
(I hope you know I'm being facetious as Hell, right now, hoping to make you laugh)
34:40 - I said it during Clerks, and I'll say it again: Randal Graves is my spirit animal.
Even still, I would never throw shade at you for not having the same reaction I did during a movie that I myself had while watching.
We all have our own experiences, and there is so much hate in this world already, that I will not add to it.
I just want you to have the tissues handy "in case" you need them, but I have no expectations for you to HAVE to use them. I do not spread hate, nor do I send bad feelings to others who don't feel the same way I do (I have had some REALLY traumatic life experiences, and honestly, hope that others do NOT have the same ones, and I empathize with those who do, but also am happy for those who don't).
Everyone has their own kind of trauma in their lives. I just don't wish any of it on anyone.
I've been a viewer of yours (and many other Reaction channels) for a long while now, and I really enjoy your videos. Feel free to jot down my name, because you'll see that I always try to bring some kind of positivity and light heartedness to the comments section.
Take care, and have a wonderful weekend!
@@IggyStardust1967 If i had a nickel for every time I ever said “This job would be great if it wasn’t for the fucking customers” at a place where I worked.. 😂
Rosario is also great in Unstoppable.
And now you need to do Clerks III! Personally, my favorite of the trilogy.
Yep! It'll be after I watch the Reboot.
@@kaiielle nice! Reboot is good, too!
38:33 It is Kevin Smith's mother Grace, of course she is the same. 😀
The blonde girl is Kevin Smith’s wife Dante‘s girlfriend
This is my favorite Kevin Smith film. It received a multiple minute standing ovation at Caanes. Randal says abhorrent things but its clear he is portayed as rhe dumb guy ergo this is how dumb people speak. Also though it is also obvious he is obnoxious but does so without hate, he doesn't look down on others for things they didn't choose, only people who make bad choices like Tbe Rings trilogy being in any way comparable to the Skywalker trilogy. I think you missed the mark.
I miss truly edgy comedies from the 90s and early/mid 2000s before jokes had to follow an agenda. Clerks 2 is fantastic.
