People who love this movie and people who hate this movie all seem to find common ground when it comes to the ending, definitely some of Smith’s strongest stuff.
@@kevinramsey417I love just how wound up Randall gets.. He's totally not letting anyone know just how much that place really meant to him.. Like in the opening the look on Dante's face as the store burns.. Neither one really want to about how much that place is part of them.
It’s even better when you find out the idea to buy the quick stop was originally going to come from silent bob but the actors thought it made more sense for Randal to have the idea, Kevin Smith agreed so that’s how they filmed it.
Wanda Sykes and Earthquake actually ad libbed their lines in their scene. The spit that the actor who played “ the sexy stud” spat was not intentionally supposed to be that thick but it was good they kept it in. Then of course Kevin Smith’s mother reprising her role as the lady looking at the expiration dates of all the milk at the end.
The “goodbye horses” scenes where Jay does the tuck is a Silence of the Lambs reference. The old lady that checks all the milk at the quick stop in Kevin Smith’s mother in both clerks movies. It’s not part of the Vieweskewniverse but Kevin Smith wrote and directed a comedy called Zach and Miri Make a Porno that stars Seth Rogan and Elisabeth Banks that you might consider checking out.
I'm the Oxford Dictionary entry for "White Person" and saw this in a predominately black theater. An older couple left about 8 minutes in, and then when Randall said "p*rch m*nkey" the entire theater erupted in laughter and didn't stop until well after the scene ended.
Shanelle, I worked at Alamo Drafthouse in 2006 and can tell you from experience, that this film was ALWAYS packed for weeks to months. Pretty much The whole staff loved it too. This and The 40 Year Old Virgin were like the top two favorite movies to clean, and serve food to around that time. They were packed house for much longer than anyone expected. This is also one of my favorite Kevin Smith films.
I use to have that Ranger Danger shirt that Randal wears. Smith said during one of his recorded chats-all-night-at-an-audience that the Mooby’s location was a closed Burger King. They rented out a cheesy motel right next to it during filming and Jason Mewes completely customized his room with furniture and decor from Target. He didn’t want to leave when they wrapped filming; asked if he could stay. Smith told him he was getting a sweetheart rate for renting out 50 rooms. When he found out how much he’d have to pay for one room on his own he immediately was ready to leave
I fell in love with Rosario Dawson during the dance scene. You can never go wrong with “The Talking Heads.” When I ran a bakery, my employees and I always made fun of our customers; we figured someone was out there making fun of us so it was justified. There is an episode of “Rescue Me” where the crew has to go to sensitivity class and they proceed, via racial slurs, to traumatize the instructor. It’s gold. Every number in the soundtrack is fantastic. Fear not! “Clerks III” is out there!
Yeah the song choices in this were perfect. Talking Heads, Smashing Pumpkins and ending on a classic Soul Asylum song to pay homage to the first movie.
Not only did I see this in theaters, on the DVD I'm named in special thank you credits to the people on Myspace who did promoting of the movie on early social media. I mean, it was a LOT of people on that list but I was just happy my small contributions got noticed
I'm there as well. So glad you commented this and others have replied as well. So nice to find people who were huge fans of this project over 15 years later
I love that dance scene because it's the first time Kevin Smith did a dance number and moved the camera but also to me *THAT* look he gives to the woman he loves and realizing he loves her to me is the feeling I feel. It's like that feeling you can't express but you know it when you see it.
13:41 - The line was originally, "What smells like nail polish?" But actor Jeff Anderson accidentally said, "What smells like shoe polish?" So they changed it to what ended up in the movie.
I saw her first in "Sin City" and I thought she was pretty cool. She only has like three scenes in "Kids", which is a totally mindfuck of a film. I don't know if Shanelle could handle it.
Honestly, I think the Donkey scene is hilarious. The way that it just keeps getting worse and the culmination of everything coming to a head at the same time had me in stitches. It kind of goes without saying, but it’s really only funny because it’s fake, and obviously no animal is harmed during the scene in any way.
I was a fan. I cracked up watching this movie in theaters. It was pretty shocking when the donkey scene happened. But I can can see why Smith did that. In Clerks there was off-screen necrophilia, I mean, how else can you top that shocking moment?
Trust me, you're going to LOVE Clerks III. Yes, we are back at the Quick Stop and thats all I'll say. I love all these movies, some more than others, and the Clerks trilogy is great! But for different reasons as each movie is different from each other, but since you loved the first one, you're going to love what they do in Clerks III
I've REALLY been enjoying your Kevin Smith watches, but I honestly can't wait to see you do Clerks III, which absolutely wrecked me when I watched it. I do enjoy all his films, and the Jay & Silent Bob ones are good silly fun. But it feels in so many ways like the Clerks Trilogy is his masterpiece, and the other fun movies he's made feel like what he does for fun and money while he's waiting for the cast to age up to the right ages for each installment. They stand on their own as "serious" art in a way that not everything I love about Kevin Smith does. We should have known based on Dante's name that there was going to be a three-part Divine Comedy coming, and I by "Divine Comedy" I ain't talking about Dogma.
I was waiting for you to do this one. For me, Clerks 2 seems like a product of it's time and still holds up for me. Especially with the LOTR scene. I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out in theaters and everyone was dying laughing. Especially during Randall's speech about bringing it back and pillow pants. It's honestly one of my favorites. I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea and that's cool. But the whole film is supposed to be about Dante and Randall "finding themselves" in the world and accepting that it's ok to live a life that you enjoy that others may not find "attractive". As long as you have what you want and what makes you happy, that's all that matters.
I miss video stores too. My first introduction of a kevin smith movie was at blockbuster with a friend, asking an employee what he recommended & brought us chasing amy. Great times
If you want more fun Quick Stop you should watch Clerks Animated Series. Only ran 6 episodes of about 20 minutes each. Was made after “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and before “Clerks 2”.
Actually, the animated series was made between "Dogma" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", airing on ABC in 2000. ABC canceled the show after two episodes. Then in 2002 Cartoon Network aired the remaining episodes. Which may be why you thought it was made between "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and "Clerks 2".
How you feel about the movie is actually the exact opposite teenagers had back when it was released (i was 16, 17 maybe when it was released) . I saw this in high schooland it was all the rage and, at the time, considered better than the original. In regards to the beastiality joke, it actually went over well. In fact it was the funniest part to some. You have to understand it was a different time. Around that time, shock videos like two girls one cup and death by horse c**k were becoming mainstream (for lack of a better word). Jokes like this weren't taboo yet
Saw Mary Cherry do a reaction to this pretty recently, glad to see another one pop up. Now if the other channels who did Clerks 1 can do the same we'd be set. Kevin Smith's work in general deserves more attention.
I can’t wait till you watch Jay and Silent Bob: Reboot and then Clerks 3, bring a tissue for both really, big especially Clerks 3!! I was a sobbing mess the first time and each time after.
This is my favourite Smith film. It has more heart than his earlier stuff, but still has more of an edge than later stuff. Clerks 3 is very different again to the other two films and I think it’s important to remember that these films have an autobiographical quality to Smith. They each tell a story with a point of view from where he is in his life now. They capture a moment in time.
This was my favorite of his movies (though haven't seen Clerks III) but I understand it's not for everyone. I think it hits hardest for 30-something men, there's not a ton of movies that really explore the evolution (often dissolution) of male friendships. So many of us lose our friends as we pursue some sense of direction.
I just found your channel and have now binged all the View Askew videos ^^ I love seeing how you're getting more and more invested in the View Askewniverse, I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing your thoughts on the rest of them!
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Clerks 3, Clerks 2 is by far my favorite of the three. The jail scene at the end makes the movie for me, Randall breaking down like that Jeff Anderson killed it with his performance!
Funny thing is that you can't really appreciate Clerks II until seeing Clerks III, because it does all eventually pay off. This is a rare example of a movie that is made better retroactively. I once tweeted Kevin Smith that I thought he inverted the Star Wars Trilogy- Clerks= A New Hope; Clerks II= Return of the Jedi (ironically, given the dialogue); Clerks III=Empire Strikes Back. He responded in the affirmative that that was how he saw these entries, too.
One of the best things Kevin’s done recently was a video he did with People Magazine in which he was upfront and honest about his mental health. He’s so brave to talk about what had been going on in his life.
Amen. Whether you like his work or not, Kevin's one of the few film directors who puts his heart and soul out on Front Street, and you can't help but admire that.
You might also enjoy This Movie Is Not Rated, a documentary about the MPAA’s rating system. Lots of interview segments from Kevin Smith sharing his experiences with censorship.
@@CrowTRobotAlthough the doc concentrated a little too mich on revealing who the mpaa reviwers are, it does reveal an amazingly idiotic system. And as you said, good interviews.
Being reminded that Shan is 4’11” or how she doesn’t want to get married bc she doesn’t want to kiss in front of her parents just makes her that much more adorable. 😃
As a pubescent teen in 06’ when this movie came out I can say this movie had me and my friends in stitches on a Friday night after school and there was no better place to be than there at the time. 😅
I saw this in the theater and was “meh” about it. It wasn’t until seeing it again years later that I really gained an appreciation for this sequel. No idea why, maybe it’s the nostalgia of it? I like it much more now than I did first viewing.
Who else has their name in the end credits from the MySpace thing Kevin did? Hubby and I both do and I love it!! Anyone else going on the Jay and Silent Bob cruise in February?? I’m so excited, can’t freakin wait!!
Fun fact 1: Rosario Dawson is in this and MIB 2 while Linda Florentino is in Dogma and MIB 1. Fun fact 2: I saw this in theater with my mom which got extremely awkward especially with the donkey scene
My cousin used to tell me I was gonna burn down the apartment whenever I forgot to turn off the coffee pot. I kept asking him "What are you talking about? It doesn't get hotter the longer you leave it on. It's the same temperature, and it is designed to take that temp. What is gonna happen? Is the glass gonna melt?" Never understood it... and then he showed me this movie!!! I was soooooooo mindblown! I flipped out on him asking if a movie was the reason he thought that...and he admitted yes, it was why... smh
The first time I felt that your thoughts were so far off, this was EASILY the best Viewaskewniverse film according to many including. A phenomenal sequel that created at the time one of the best "Duologies". The humor, the character development, the story. I saw it in theaters and it got a standing ovation.
No. Very few people saw this movie in theaters ..what we DID do as I recall ..we went to Blockbuster and got it because we got to Blockbuster too late and the brand new desirable first night releases were already rented ...it was sad time sometimes 😢
Went to see this in theaters when it came out. To be honest, I remember it as being one of the funniest experiences I’ve ever had in a theater. Maybe most of the audience was familiar with the characters from View Askew, but I think the jokes (at the time) just hit differently than they do today. For example, the theater I was in was so loud with laughter during the donkey show, you could barely hear the dialogue 🤣 😂
I feel like someone might have said this but Jennifer Schwalbach is also known as Mrs. Kevin Smith. They have been married since '99 and have Harley Quinn Smith who you already saw as a baby in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and will see much more of soon.
36:10 - Oh, you have to watch the Evening With Kevin Smith Q&As...you *HAVE TO.* I don't mean for the channel, I mean for your love of trivia. And for a good laugh! 😃
The ipening song is Nothing But Flowers by the Talking Heads. The singer has lived through an apocalypse and been part of a restoration of pre industrial living but laments the loss of mundane modern conveniences. Might as well be sung by Dante or Randall!
That Mooby's used to be a Burger King, it's gone now. Adam The Woo went there to line up shots from the movie about 5 or 6 years ago and it was already torn down. He still lined up shots, you just have to imagine the building being there.
The Clerks trilogy is the best way to understand GenX guys, as they moved from youth (Clerks), to adulthood (II), and through to middle age (III). That's the take of this GenX trans woman.
And seeing how you responded to "Goodbye Horses" (Jay flashing & tucking) makes me wonder if you've seen Silence of the Lambs. It is part of Hollywood's descent into transphobic tropes in the 1990s, but it's so good I recommend it unreservedly anyway. Absolute masterpiece.
That scene when Jay is trying to take a piss and keeps getting hit by the door omg, makes me laugh every time. And damn that Listerfiend. PS I heard that one of the reasons Rosario Dawson agreed to do this movie was for the donkey scene, and then she missed it when it was being filmed. I wrote that before you got to it in your review, oops.
This is my favourite Kevin Smith movie, the dialogue is masterfully hilarious and it actually has a wholesome theme of friendship and finding meaning in life.
Thankyou for an honest review, Shanelle. When I remembered that Superbad was your favourite movie, I realised that this one might seem like it was treading similar ground! Although Chasing Amy will always be my favourite Viewaskewniverse movie, Clerks II ranks pretty highly because it’s sweet, funny and from the heart. I also remember it for the surprisingly tense audio commentary on the DVD! Commentaries on Smith movies are often almost as funny as the movies themselves, but the Clerks II one had a very noticeable “vibe.” Weird! The behind-the-scenes documentary was really good though.
Your voice is even more beautiful and relaxing than its usual also perfect tone and cadence of professional friendly fun we all love chatting away. About my fav topic MOVIES
This is one of my favorites of Kevin's. So much that when he decided to sell off his collections of props, outfits, etc from the films. I bought the screen used wedding invitations. :) And Zack spitting into his hand during the donkey scene was a one shot take. It was so perfect.
I cannot WAIT to see your reaction to the third movie. It’s by far my favorite Kevin Smith movie, and easily the most nuanced and well-crafted from a filmmaking standpoint
You're not wrong about this being self-indulgent, although it does serve the fans well enough. I will say Clerks III fixes a lot of the excesses and misjudgments of this one, and really hits bone where II only scratches the surface, so there's that to look forward to. A few of the scenes in III are serious competition for the best work of Smith's career.
To answer your question, yes you can probably find a zip up hoodie and kevin smiths comic book shop jay and silent bobs secret stash in red bank new jersey as well as orher movie memorabilia. Or u can just go to the quickstop in jersey. Its like 15 mins from the comic book store. I went last year. It was amazing.
And Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. The little girl that sees Dante on the toilet is Harley Quinn Smith. The woman going through the milk is Kevin Smith’s mother.
As a Star Trek fan it always made me laugh when they fight over lord of the rings and Star wars being better than one another I'll be like sitting in the corner eating popcorn laughing 🤣🤣

We definitely saw this in a theater and everyone there was laughing like crazy at the donkey show.
It was the first kevin Smith movie I got to see in theaters
Exciting to hear some Soul Asylum at the end.
As a pubescent teen in 06’ when this movie came out I can say this movie had me and my friends in stitches on a Friday night after school and there was no better place to be than there at the time. 😅
Always love returning to the ViewAskewniverse
randall really carries this movie with his performance in the jail cell, hes not a 'big time' actor and he really stepped up
Jason Lee was shooting "My Name is Earl", which is why he looks different, and wasn't one of his other characters.
Yeah, pretty sure he was under contract not to shave the stache.
I loooove that Alanis Morisette song at the end "You See Everything", also great since she had that cameo in Dogma :D
I saw this in the theater and was “meh” about it. It wasn’t until seeing it again years later that I really gained an appreciation for this sequel. No idea why, maybe it’s the nostalgia of it? I like it much more now than I did first viewing.
When you gonna do clerks 3?! it's so good
Who else has their name in the end credits from the MySpace thing Kevin did? Hubby and I both do and I love it!!
Anyone else going on the Jay and Silent Bob cruise in February?? I’m so excited, can’t freakin wait!!
I do.
Yep
Me
Me
Fun fact 1: Rosario Dawson is in this and MIB 2 while Linda Florentino is in Dogma and MIB 1.
Fun fact 2: I saw this in theater with my mom which got extremely awkward especially with the donkey scene
I’ve loved these characters for almost 30 years. I can’t wait until you watch Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and then Clerks III.
This is my favorite Clerks movie. Can't wait for your Clerks III reaction and commentary.
I flipped out on him asking if a movie was the reason he thought that...and he admitted yes, it was why... smh
[3 min into the video]
“This is sad!”
Me: [remembers Clerks 3] ohhh boy…😬
The first time I felt that your thoughts were so far off, this was EASILY the best Viewaskewniverse film according to many including. A phenomenal sequel that created at the time one of the best "Duologies". The humor, the character development, the story. I saw it in theaters and it got a standing ovation.
Including what?
@@dustywaynemusic6297 Typo, but it did get great reviews from a number of sources.
The Pillowpants scene gets me every time 😂
I remember seeing this film when I was 16 in 2007 and falling so hard in love with Rosario Dawson.
There's JAY & SILENT BOB REBOOT after this, and then CLERKS III. Just know...a lot of us consider CLERKS III to be a travesty. I'm one of them.
No. Very few people saw this movie in theaters ..what we DID do as I recall ..we went to Blockbuster and got it because we got to Blockbuster too late and the brand new desirable first night releases were already rented ...it was sad time sometimes 😢
Saddens me so many peoole have not seen silence of the lambs "love your suit!"
Went to see this in theaters when it came out. To be honest, I remember it as being one of the funniest experiences I’ve ever had in a theater. Maybe most of the audience was familiar with the characters from View Askew, but I think the jokes (at the time) just hit differently than they do today.
For example, the theater I was in was so loud with laughter during the donkey show, you could barely hear the dialogue 🤣 😂
i can't believe so many people weren't taught about pillow pants
Love when one of my favourite Reactors covers a Kevin Smith movie.😁 Cheers and Happy Weekend from Canada, Shanelle. 🥃👍✌❤
🎶This was a Burger King...🎶
🎶Now it's all covered in Mooby's...🎶
🎶You got it, you got it.🎶
such a underrated movie! now u gotta watch clerks 3 with elias all grown up he is funny af
I saw this film in theatres when it released with a bunch of friends. My whole theatre was laughing throughout. It was such a fun experience.
The restaurant was a closed down burger king
Jay was doing Silence of the Lambs
Can’t wait till Clerks 3. No spoilers, but it’s so different from the first two (in a mostly good way)
Very polarizing. As Clerks fans, I loved it, my wife hated it.
Shanelle: “Ooh, Jennifer Schwalbach is in this!”
Also Shanelle: “I don’t know who this blonde chick is.”
I really think you'll enjoy the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back reboot. It was a pretty good sequel to the first one.
This is my favourite Kevin Smith movie, the dialogue is masterfully hilarious and it actually has a wholesome theme of friendship and finding meaning in life.
The woman arranging the milk at the Quick Stop in the end of the movie was Kevin's mom.
Hope you liked the Alanis song playing at 31:00... can't miss a soundtrack by God herself!
This is by far my fav Askewniverse movie.
I can't wait to see your reaction to Clerks III. It's an emotional rollercoaster.
The Mooby's location used be a be a Burger King
Your voice is even more beautiful and relaxing than its usual also perfect tone and cadence of professional friendly fun we all love chatting away. About my fav topic
MOVIES
This is one of my favorites of Kevin's. So much that when he decided to sell off his collections of props, outfits, etc from the films. I bought the screen used wedding invitations. :)
And Zack spitting into his hand during the donkey scene was a one shot take.
"Mrs. Hicks" is actually "Mrs. Kevin Smith!" She was also in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
And Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
The little girl that sees Dante on the toilet is Harley Quinn Smith. The woman going through the milk is Kevin Smith’s mother.
5:36 “Why not me? I like seals and sh*t.” Is a line I still use to this day 😂 In fact, I used it today 🤣
As a Star Trek fan it always made me laugh when they fight over lord of the rings and Star wars being better than one another I'll be like sitting in the corner eating popcorn laughing 🤣🤣
