- Episode 31: Sahelanthropus from Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
No Traces / No Alerts / Perfect Stealth / S Rank.
* * *
RULES:
1) Perfect Stealth / No Kills / No Combat Alerts.
2) NO TRACES bonus requires:
- No CQC (hold-ups are allowed) [doesn't apply to bosses]
- No direct physical contact with enemies, like kicking or bumping into someone
- No weapons or bionic arm attacks
- No support weapons, including empty magazines
- No attacks from buddies
- No rank-restricting equipment, like active camo [there is an exception made in this mission for calling in air support]
- No supply or vehicle drops (calling in the chopper is allowed).
3) EQUIPMENT:
- Enemies have maximum level of preparedness against covert actions
- All enemy equipment is left intact (mines, cameras, helmets, etc.)
- My own equipment is fully upgraded with all bionic arm upgrades unlocked.
4) As an extra challenge, when dealing with enemies who are not the mission targets:
- No hold-ups
- No distractions
- No suspicions raised.

If you want to No Trace / S-rank this mission without firing a single shot there is only one thing you need to know: calling in the air support does not restrict your rank. So call Pequod and let him do his job. You can run around, if you want, or you can find a place to hide and wait 9-10 minutes. If you stay in the same spot I did, Sahelanthropus shouldn't be able to hit you and will never attack the chopper or ever use Archaea grenades. That's all there to it.
I, however, love making things difficult for myself, so I left the hiding spot before Pequod could destroy Sahelanthropus. You can see the reason for doing that at 5:27.

Can you punch Sahelanthropus itself with the rocket arm for any real damage?
+bearambles You can! The damage per hit is very small though, so unless you have an hour to spare, fighting it only with blast arm isn't practical.
+prenatual I wish you had dealt just the final blow with the arm. Punching the Sahelanthropus to death right after punching Psycho Mantis would have been really cool. Even though it would be hard to get the timing right so the helicopter doesn’t get the kill shot.

These fights genuinely scared me. I get so used to fighting grunts and shit that a sudden colossus fight is so unexpected.

Holy shit, this is my headcanon:
Big Boss ended the battle when Psycho Mantis appeared infront of Sahelanthropus's core, and finished it off by rocket puching Mantis into the core at the last second, yelling "ROCKET PUUUUUNCH!!"
This is how a lets play vid should be. A skilled player with no talking, showing new ways to do things in game.
Interesting. Seems like you'll lose money with this strategy if you lose the chopper. Might really be expensive with Extreme mode. But that punch was worth it.
QuickQuips Depends on what your chopper has on it. Mine only cost about 35k per chopper (granted I really should have put better stuff on it but still)
Since I have full money, shitload of reward I can't use because I'm full in everything* seem to be a good excuse for waste my money. :P Now my real challenge is to found excuse for waste lot of money.
But I still don't like the tactic just because I don't like to lose some men ( just like the prisonners, I feel bad when they died XD )

Thanks a lot for that. I'm a stealthy player and a coward when I have to face freaking giant badass monster robots. Boss combat is not why I played this game. LOL So this saved me from quitting! Although I think they have patched this blind spot now, 3 years later, because he did find me there even though I didn't move or stand up even once. His head was half peaking over the little rock. He can't land any of his ground attacks, though, even standing right behind the little rock, just his missiles did hit me from time to time which didn't do serious injury. He damaged himself with his sword-rock attacks, trying to hit me being so close by. I had Quiet with me, too, who distracted him a lot and so he went back and forth between the road and my spot, getting mad because he coulnd't kill me. He did not aim his laser at me, but used it once. He also used Archaea grenades once, but he didn't attack my chopper. The boy appeared once. With all the cutscenes included it took 24min, I got A rank.
I'm guessing calling in air-support does not restrict the rank because a support chopper WILL be dispatched at a certain time in the mission automatically.

Prenatual, are you interested in playing through some of the older Metal Gear Solid games before you move on to other games like the newest Deus Ex or Hitman? That is, after you're done with the Phantom Pain?
I know you don't have a PS3, but it would be great if someday you would come back to it and visit them, since I'd want to see how you'd approach playing on the higher difficulties.
Again, it's entirely up to you, but it would be nice to have something to play in the interim between games, right?
+Francis Persona Can't say I'm interested in making videos for the older MGS games. Not having the hardware is the main reason, but I also don't want to spend time doing something that's been done already by other people. I'm sure there are several ghost/no equipment playthroughs for each game. Just search the RUclips or Twitch.

When I first reached this episode I was like "WTF??...this is too much" then fought him with my rifle and sniper rifle...got him with 30% health,then I was killed by that laser beam...my hands were shaking like crazy while fighting him...

Thank you for your help i never thought i would beat this level. I spent 2 hours and millions of gmp on upgrading stuff when all i needed to do was this. Feel like cheating a bit as i didn't do anything but call in the helicopter.

Mgs is truly unique, it has so much potential and so many cool elements. But like many comic book and anime creators, they don't know when to stop adding or how to filter anything out. So it ended up being the most convoluted, nonsensical, goofy stories ever.
Half the games elements (this game, mg1, all of em) are realistic tactical espionage action. The other half is something found in an anime obsessed kids 5th grade notebook, the storyline is so stupid collectively.
One second is you're doing realistic ops in war torn africa... The next moment a Ginyu squad-like group of mist zombies are rollerblading towards you.
One second you're sneaking into a hospital full of wounded comrades, the next you're squirting a water pistol at a Zelda fire temple Boss who's riding a flaming steed.
If yoyou wrote the game, when would you say "yeah then a 13yr old psychic ginger levitates next to the machine"
