- Gary Cooper is among Classic Hollywood's most recognizable and acclaimed actors, widely known for his naturalistic and authentic acting style. Named the eleventh greatest screen legend by the American Film Institute, Cooper built a successful career spanning over thirty years. With two shiny Academy Awards proudly displayed on his shelf, and not one, not two, but three more nominations, Cooper wasn't just an actor; he was a maestro of the silver screen. In 1961, the icing on his illustrious career cake came in the form of an Academy Honorary Award. Picture this: for 23 years straight, he was a fixture in the top-10 film personalities, and for a dazzling 18 years, he ruled the roost as one of the highest-grossing stars. The American Film Institute crowned him the 11th gem in the dazzling constellation of the 25 greatest male stars of classic Hollywood cinema. But despite all this there is some untold truth that you might not know about the legend, join us today as we talk about everything you didn’t know about the legend Garry cooper.
Even when older with bags under his eyes, he was gorgeous.
I loved all his movies.
One of Patricia Neal’s greatest regrets was aborting Cooper’s baby. He drove her to the procedure. Luckily for her she was able to later with her marriage to conceive and carry pregnancies. Not all women who had abortions at that time were later able to carry pregnancies. Marilyn Monroe and Polly Bergen for two. Polly Bergen spoke out regarding her abortion and her inability later to have children.

Patricia Neal did a lot of what many starlets did back then, in order to obtain work.
Oh wasn’t he so sweet he drove her to abort their baby
Her affair with Cooper certainly didn't help her career. Who else are you referring to?

This man had eyes like no other I’ve ever seen, the way he would roll them while looking sideways, paired with his sloppy grin, always gets me!

His wife was Roman Catholic, divorce was not gonna happen. Many years after her dad’s death Maria Cooper reconciled with Patricia O”Neal and sponsored her mother’s rival into the Catholic faith.
Patricia. Neal
Apart from his cheating ways?...Such behavior would kill most relationships, and deservedly so. Just because he was a famous guy, he got away with a lot of nasty things.

I lost everything for him when reading about how he treated Patricia Neal.
When they had an affair she was 21 - he 46 and married. When she bevame pregnant, he pressured her to get an abortion to protect his career and marriage.
She had a nervous breakdown - he abandoned her.

Thank you for leaving a comment 😊we appreciate it
Truth is truth Gary Cooper had to be tutored by Major League coaches so that he can play the part of Lou Gehrig and pride of the Yankees he was not trained for the army or the French foreign legion in Morocco, he was never in the army so he could be trained to be a killer my dad was in the army and he said they trained us to kill I thought Gary Cooper was the best actor of all, he had to be shown what to do when the part he was not necessarily a baseball fan but he looked great and pride of the Yankees Gary Cooper was never really a cowboy came from a Rich family not as rich as Humphrey Bogart's but you still need to be trained what to do for certain parts my point.
Strange, but Carl Sandburg once called him the most beloved illiterates this country has ever known. In his autobiography, Anthony Quinn wrote about a night under the skies in Mexico in 1953 during filming of “Blowing wild”:
“Lying on the ground with Gary Cooper, actress Suzan Ball ( Quinn’s love of his life) and Barbara Stanwyck. “ At one point, I looked over and noticed that Coop’s left arm appeared to be missing. It was a very strange thing. The moonlight had left him silhouetted in an unusual way, but as my eyes adjusted to the shadows, I could place his hands underneath Barbara Stanwyck’s skirt. Suzan was soundly asleep on my arm, and Barbara had her eyes closed and was feigning sleep. Coop was working his hand quite diligently between her thighs, and she moved with him. He kept up with his talking, going on and on about women, all the while diddling the famous lady who lay at his side”.
Anthony Quinn also wrote that he was known to have different women for different moods. What a lucky guy!

During the 1980'sI commuted with a fellow worker for about six months. During WW II he was in special services. His job was to escort coop around as he entertained the troops with just his own personal greetings. He tokens what you saw on screen was exactly what he was in real !ife. Jeff Bridges has one wife
You must understand it was more acceptable by wives for their husband to have affairs. Keep it quiet and don’t bring anything home. Not saying it was right. That’s just the way it was back then.
I’ve always admired Gary Cooper as an actor & human being! I’ve seen news reels of his testimony before the HUAC HEARINGS and he denounced communism but refused to name names, saying that he didn’t run in those circles & didn’t know who did! His defense of Carl Foreman is legendary when he stood up to John Wayne on the set of “ High Noon”! Wayne wanted Foreman to be removed & Cooper said if Foreman’s name didn’t appear on the credits he would quit the movie! Foreman’s name appears in the credits & Cooper won the Oscar for his performance! John Wayne was so upset that he attacked the movie as un-American, & made “Rio Bravo” in response! At least that’s the rumor!

John Wayne's jealousy of high noon is well known, when he accepted the Oscar for Gary Cooper he wondered why his business manager did not get him the role in the almost scratching his head so that you could see it when the film and Cooper got a lot of awards and credit for being probably the greatest Western of all time and I say that because I think it's true the greatest Western of all time Shane should get some credit Wayne's The Searcher's high plains drifter a ghost story from Clint Eastwood , destry Rides again Jimmy Stewart, the oxbow incident Henry Fonda , my name is nobody, the proud ones Robert Ryan, No Name on the bullet Audie Murphy, Warlock Richard Wid mark
Buck Jones you said it better than I did.
High noon came out in 52 and it took John Wayne and Howard Hawks 7 years to answer high noon, Rio bravo is a fun Western the reason it's a classic today is because Westerns are so bad aid in modern time's they don't have the Stars like Cooper Wayne Stewart,Fonda.

"Communist ideas" actually were in reality equal rights, social welfare and a democratic (small d) country. I remember the 1950s well. I remember my mother arguing about rights for people of Color with someone at a gathering. Obviously she was winning the argument because he suddenly stood up and said, "You'd better be careful, Charline, people will accuse you of having pink petticoats (being a Communist).
