I saw him on Donahue, and he showed Jerry absolutely no respect. He told Jerry that he had a big ego. That was when I first realized that Jerry might not be who I thought he was.
The idea that Jerry Lewis was a comedy auteur and genius was always lost on me. He is about as funny as having a tooth pulled. Even as a child I found his facial gurning and slapschtick tiresome.
My mom loved his humor, but she couldn't stand Robin Williams (?!?). I can only assume it was a generational thing, like she was young and happy and probably had fond memories of the time when Lewis was popular. For the record, I'm in my 60s so I was around when he still had some currency in Hollywood, but never with me. I swear I could do better comedy than that goofy shtick of his, and I'm no comedian.
Auteur is a good work for Jerry's shtick. Thank you. I've never come across it and had to look it up. I enjoy that since we have a dictionary in our hands. 😊
When I was 10 years old I donated 2 weeks worth of allowance to the Muscular Dystrophy Association that Jerry Lewis was taking care of and Jerry Lewis wrote me a signed letter back personally thanking a kid from Brooklyn giving his 20 dollars to the MDA. He even put his signature comedy face stamp on the letter.
I believe he was put up on a pedestal by Hollywood and he would use his power over females because of his low self esteem because he was never quite the leading man like dean Martin and other more serious and dramatic actors so he pushed his comedic talents to the hilt and gained a foothold on becoming a director of some of his movies and used that to get back at females he felt he could never win their admiration any other way, he was very funny in my opinion but once i found out all this i lost a lot of respect for someone i grew up watching in movies and actually looked forward to his movies, sad that things sometimes turn out this way i hope he found peace with our maker because i do believe in the end that is what really counts.
I was a nurse who did home care for MD patients back in the early 80s and believe me I grew to resent the MDA. If the patient was news worthy material the mda couldn't do enough for them and used them to promote the organization for more donations while other patients couldn't even get a wheelchair when they needed one. I only had one family the mda helped out of the dozen or so I assisted. That family had a financial advantage already and they were two brothers whose father bought them a record store (it was back in the late 70s early 80s!) And this garnered much publicity so the mda made sure they had the latest equipment and adapted van and lots of publicity while my other patients who were disadvantaged and in greater need were ignored or blown off by the organization. To say I was disgusted by them (the mda, not the brothers) is an understatement.
I met him once, back in the 80's, I thanked him for the work he had done for MDA (specifically the telethons) but he didn't even reply. This was at an event where he was a special guest. The whole evening he sat in a corner and tried his best not to speak with anyone. I wrote it off as just a bad day for him. later, after reading stories about his bad behavior, I changed my mind. He was simply not a nice person.
I can’t disagree, mate. Raising money and awareness is noble. Don’t take this wrong please but Jimmy sad vile in the uk raised millions for charity too….Humans are so bloody complicated, aye cobber❤
Finally!! The truth comes out. I never liked him' even before the truth came out. I never blamed Dean Martin for going out on his own. Lewis was holding him back. But, boy, Lewis holds a grudge.
His Telethon for MDA,was, according to everyone who worked on it,all about HIM..His ego was fed on this annual show..A monster in real life..Anyone who doubts this,do some research..btw,I used to love his movies, when I was growing up
Jerry really cracked me up in his movies and stage performance he was a comic genius in my opinion. But he was a stinking dirt bag in his personal life 1st class jackASS to people. Shame on him, i feel for his ex wife and older children. To bad he was anyone's father. 😢
Can’t help it - will love Jerry Lewis till the day I die. The neighborhood kids and myself just looooved him. We would get stressed out in the theatre watching one of his movies and shoveled down popcorn, Red Hots, Junior Mints, Chocolate and Jujy Fruits ad nauseum to try to cope with his predicaments. 😂😂😂😂
Video could have been half as long, if not for the constant repetitions, also confusing pictures of Jerry Lewis with picture of Jerry Lee Lewis was a truly stupid error.
From what I have read about Jerry, he had a very cruel, abusive father who delighted in humiliating him. Sadly the “sins of the father” passed on to Jerry. This does not excuse him for his abusive behavior toward others. Comedian Johnathan Winters, a true comic genius, was by all reports a good man, even though he also had an abusive father. Winters was emotionally fragile and was periodically hospitalized for mental illness - likely bipolar disorder. But he was never cruel like Jerry. Perhaps if Jerry would have sought 3:07 counseling, but likely fame at a young age was corrupting for him. Dean, by all reports, was a very loving father and, despite his onstage persona, did not abuse alcohol. TCM has shown a great documentary of Dino’s life.
Exactly. I watched this entire thing, not really wanting to, but accepting the hook, and then I didn't even get what I was baited for. Is there any way to block this channel so I never have to see any of their videos ever again?
There are plenty of younger people , in their teens and twenties that can be pretty rotten . Also , plenty of elderly people who are mellow and down to Earth , the type of people that are a picture of someone's parents or grandparents .
He had a TYRANT'S MENTALITY ..... you could see it in his forceful interaction with the in theater audience who were virtually assaulted with Lewis' remarks and pushy pleas and even insults to get donations ..... he was very hard to watch. A gifted wise cracking showman .... he wanted to be the same as those he worked with - Dean Martin for one .... which was a clear fantasy world ideology as Martin was BETTER LOOKING, CHARMING & Funny without stooping to cheap shot antics or buffoonery ! Jerry did not handle his limited skills well ...... I'm sure many paid a price for the power wielded in unkind moods !
During his last years, the MS Foundation was almost his only source of income. He charged almost all of his living expenses to the Foundation as well as a hefty fee for being their spokesman and host of the annual telethon. I read that he was so flagrant in his monetary abuses that there was cause to bring criminal charges, but it was felt it would hurt donations too seriously. They decided to sever ties with Lewis.
The movie " Cracking Up " aka " Smorgasbord " ( as it was billed overseas ) is one of my favorite movies along with " Hardly Working " and the movies in his '60's heyday I am especially fond of. It saddens me that someone with such talents, friends, fans, not to mention six sons who only wanted to love him...was so miserable.
@alanreeser2187: Lol ! WRONG ! I guess that is why Paramount Studios gave Jerry Lewis the keys to the kingdom - and told him he could do ANYTHING he wanted. He was a major success with his movies after he and Dean split up.
He never was funny to me, he just seemed....ridiculous. But I actually started to despise him when he was on a tv show and stated that when he was flying, he always went to the bathroom over my state. I felt more than insulted, I felt violated.
@desertrose2059: Well then you must think Jim Carey is ridiculous because he was inspired by Jerry Lewis and felt “psychically linked” to him. Jim Carey ADORED Jerry Lewis.

I enjoyed his movies with Dean Martin used to watch them with my Dad. They were great together, good comedy duo. I didn't know Jerry Lewis personally so I can't comment. R.I.P Dad. Obviously wrong not leaving first wife and kids anything. God bless them.
His treatment of his first wife and children was so unkind. Also, Jerry never admitted that he was the father of a baby girl, born out of wedlock. Sadly when she grew older, she became penniless and was living on the streets. Out of all his children ( 6 boys ) she looked the most like him ) He knew she was struggling and never supported her through out her later years. Frank Sanitra did the same feathering a baby girl born out of wedlock... she also looked the most like Frank then any of his other children. It's difficult to understand his selfishness by leaving nothing to his biological children , and giving all his wealth to his second wife and a non biological daughter. It's so tragic, that I can't love and respect him as a great actor ect... like I use too as a child. 😢

He was hosting the tonight show for johnny carson In the early seventies. He introduced a guest. The guest came out with his hands in his pockets and Jerry Lewis said I would shake hands with you but I see you're busy. Without a doubt one of the funniest things He ever said.
As a kid, like many others, I loved watching Jerry Lewis movies. As I got older and started to read of his mean side, my love of his comedy soon faded. Like many comedians, he had a "Jekyll and Hyde" personality.
A friend of mine who used to go to autograph shows and Western/Nostalgia conventions spoke with an actress that worked on a film with him. She told my friend Jerry Lewis was riding a bicycle towards her and jumped off of it before it crashed in to her... this was his idea of a 'prank' - she was hurt and didn't think it was funny! The next time I see my friend I'll ask him who the actress was.
Maniac genius. Both words summaries him. He was like Jekyll and Hyde as a person. The Nutty Professor is him. He burned bridges because of his drive and giant ego. His career success was from 50's to 60's after he lost his flare for being funny. The rest of his life was the telethon a few films mostly forgettable . A guy without a mission. To go from a person who was at the center to a guy not in the room must have smashed his ego inside. So much of his life was defined by his past. Many of his interviews were laced with anger and putdowns. I believe he cared for Dean Martin his only real friend .
He had a daughter out of wedlock. She now is in her late 70's and lives on the streets in Philadelphia. Her mother was a Vegas show girl. Lewis saw his daughter but never claimed. her as his own. She looks like his twin. He was with her mother for 3 years. Her name is Suszanne.
He had a smile like ( does anyone remember the story about the Cheshire cat ) and yet did great charity work. I feel sorry for everyone that he hurt especially his 1st wife and family. And I also I wanna say that I alway's loved dean Martin for his great talent and family man too !
I remember one year when Lewis was doing his MDA telethons that he called all those children "God's mistakes". A lot of people who used to be with him no longer appeared in his telethons because of his attitude toward children. He had to have been making good money from them.
@@ALegendsLegacy-45 maybe laughter is like medicine too. He may have done some retched things in life but humour was was what he did most. He even kind of laid a foundation for his field of endeavor. Well we might have not known Jerry personally but people who worked with him experienced a bad side of him. Not forgetting how he didn’t portray himself well on most interviews.
Many critics said he was his best while working with Dean. The movie directors could control his tendency for excess. Once he started directing himself, his performances went downhill. While I was a big fan of him in childhood, with the exception of The Nutty Professor and his dramatic roles, I sadly have to agree with the critics. I still love watching his movies with Dean. I was really sad when they split up.
@elizabethcloutman8914: Lol ! You must be joking or are totally ignorant of the truth. Do you just make up false information and then document as truth ? SMH
He was a product of his time. He was not alone using his position to abuse and assualt women. What I consider as most inhumane is the way he treated Patti and his sons. He was arrogant, insecure, narcissistic, and vicious. But , he did leave a legacy in the movie industry.

@@janestarr4403 The reason Vivian was asked to keep the same weight she was hired at - was nothing to do with Lucy - it was because she was supposed to look like the wife of Fred Mertz over 20 years her senior - not to look like his daughter. @@LJ-ht4zs Landlords, people who own a building don't have money? That's an interesting concept! Vivian's looking overweight to match Fred defies how Alice wasn't overweight when she was married to Ralph in "The Honeymooners." Your thesis is flawed by both of your arguments. Vivian's contract demanded couldn't lose weight. Granted, Ethel couldn't look like a runway model in her role, but remaining heavy in contrast to Lucy's slender figure doesn't seem fair.. If she would have been thinner, she would seemingly be more compatible as a friend in their roles. Going back to my 'Honeymooners' example, both Alice and Trixie were close friends and the same body type. In fact, Trixie appeared to be financially better off than Alice. Meadows remained the star because of the script writers. Ethel always following Lucy in her antics is not reasonable if Ethel was an older, more respected character. In a script, Ethel should have tried, even if unsuccessful, to deter Lucy's schemes instead of a weak follower into Lucy's antics. Ethel would have less screen time, but to be a willing partner in Lucy's antics even though

Seen him on a talk show. He was very arrogant and snub. Never liked him and did not find him funny.
Yeah…
I saw him on Donahue, and he showed Jerry absolutely no respect. He told Jerry that he had a big ego. That was when I first realized that Jerry might not be who I thought he was.
I know. He seemed nasty and cruel.
I never thought he was very funny either.
Narcissists are drawn to positions of power or situations in which they will be admired. They cannot feel compassion, empathy, or remorse.
He was one of the most unfunny people ever and a dictator when working with other people! Couldn't stand watching any of his movies!
Really ? Thank you for leaving a comment
The idea that Jerry Lewis was a comedy auteur and genius was always lost on me. He is about as funny as having a tooth pulled. Even as a child I found his facial gurning and slapschtick tiresome.
Really ? Thank you for leaving a comment
I agree with you👏👏
My mom loved his humor, but she couldn't stand Robin Williams (?!?).
Good word, auteur. Thnx!
Auteur is a good work for Jerry's shtick. Thank you. I've never come across it and had to look it up.
I enjoy that since we have a dictionary in our hands. 😊
Well...'what an asshole' as my granny would say.
Nice to know👏👏 Thanks for leaving a comment 😀
Yeah I agree with you😢
It’s weird these talented people have double lives if it’s not womanizing it’s being a sociopath
Yes true
That background 'music' is very irritating. I had to turn off the sound and read the captions instead.
Our apologies…next time we will take this into consideration
No matter how Lewis is categorized, I'll always be grateful for his work with Muscular Dystrophy.
His Telethon was all about HIM..He treated everyone around him like crap.@@sweetpealee056
You mean calling the kids "God's mistakes". He only visited the kids when it was arranged for the camera.
Thank you for leaving a comment
His Telethon for MDA,was, according to everyone who worked on it,all about HIM..His ego was fed on this annual show..A monster in real life..Anyone who doubts this,do some research..btw,I used to love his movies, when I was growing up
True
Eventually, the MDA disassociated from Jerry,,removing him from the board of directors, I believe.,No more telethons after that.

So sad for anyone to emotionally and physically abuse their children!
I know right😢
From what I have read about Jerry, he had a very cruel, abusive father who delighted in humiliating him.
As a child he cracked me up. I guess he was a complete asshole though.
🥲

I vaguely remember the last time he was on TV with Dean Martin he verbally abused Martin, with much feeling. Never liked him after thar.
You wonder how he lived so long does the saying, "The Good Die Young" answer the question?
Indeed yeah 😢
The bible also says somewhere that evil people live long lives
So, everyone who grows old sucks?

I love that the image at 16:50 is rock and roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis... great work photo editor!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yes you’re right…thanks for leaving a comment 😃
During his last years, the MS Foundation was almost his only source of income. He charged almost all of his living expenses to the Foundation as well as a hefty fee for being their spokesman and host of the annual telethon. I read that he was so flagrant in his monetary abuses that there was cause to bring criminal charges, but it was felt it would hurt donations too seriously. They decided to sever ties with Lewis.
"Jerry's back--he's the original jerk!" -- ads for "Hardly Working" in 1981.

I agree. Never liked him, but I adored Dino from the time I was 3. Bob Hope gave me the ick, too.
After the split, Dean was STILL funny. And a good singer.
I have heard for years he could be a A-HOLE, but after Dean he had some funny solo movies like the Patsy and Nutty Professor. Just saying.
@alanreeser2187: Lol ! WRONG ! I guess that is why Paramount Studios gave Jerry Lewis the keys to the kingdom - and told him he could do ANYTHING he wanted. He was a major success with his movies after he and Dean split up.

@fob1xxl: Jumping on the hate Jerry bandwagon with nothing to back it up ?
I enjoyed his movies with Dean Martin used to watch them with my Dad. They were great together, good comedy duo. I didn't know Jerry Lewis personally so I can't comment. R.I.P Dad. Obviously wrong not leaving first wife and kids anything. God bless them.
Thanks for leaving a comment.🙏
How does one "feather" a baby girl born out of wedlock?
Played his real nasty self in the movie The King Of Comedy starring Robert De Niro horrible man was Jerry Lewis.

As a kid, like many others, I loved watching Jerry Lewis movies. As I got older and started to read of his mean side, my love of his comedy soon faded. Like many comedians, he had a "Jekyll and Hyde" personality.
Interesting thank you for your comment
A friend of mine who used to go to autograph shows and Western/Nostalgia conventions spoke with an actress that worked on a film with him. She told my friend Jerry Lewis was riding a bicycle towards her and jumped off of it before it crashed in to her... this was his idea of a 'prank' - she was hurt and didn't think it was funny! The next time I see my friend I'll ask him who the actress was.
Thank you for leaving a comment
The actress was Suzanna Leigh.
The movie was Boeing, Boeing.
The guy was a real SOB, hard on his kids and the break-up with Dean Martin was the best thing that Dean ever did.
😢

When she had to take over after her divorce - act in, produce, and run the entire Studio - as well as raise 2 kids she became a bit tighter and more demanding. Never have I heard her being called a horrible person. (More demanding, yes)
@@LJ-ht4zs My ex husband said he once met her in Disneyland and she was quite gracious. I did hear she insisted Vivian Vance had to keep on weight so she would always be the frumpy side kick. As the Charlie Rich song say, "No one knows what goes on 'Behind Closed Doors."
@@janestarr4403 The reason Vivian was asked to keep the same weight she was hired at - was nothing to do with Lucy - it was because she was supposed to look like the wife of Fred Mertz over 20 years her senior - not to look like his daughter. Also the frumpy look again they were supposed to be landlords, less economically successful as the Ricardos. I considered the Ricardo/Mertz The Fabulous Four - every one in the cast was brilliant in their role which made it the best loved/funniest sitcom of its time. (to me forever)
@@LJ-ht4zs Landlords, people who own a building don't have money? That's an interesting concept! Vivian's looking overweight to match Fred defies how Alice wasn't overweight when she was married to Ralph in "The Honeymooners."
Your thesis is flawed by both of your arguments.

It's Always interesting to look how a powerful person handles having a powerful Jupiter and behaving naturally like Zeus when in ' the moment ' he knew he had a certain power and he used his charm to make people laugh at him , it's not that obvious . In Europe you're as popular as your best work , always . Not in America where it's what have you done for me lately .
