A Criterion release won't use Fidelity In Motion to encode their disc. So best to import these releases.
This is very true. I’d recommend this Studiocanal over an eventual Criterion for that reason alone.
The Greatest film ever made..my comfort movie....sold my Imprint in anticipation of the 4K . I've been watching it yearly for the last 25 years......... I am sure Studio Canal / Film 4 will release it in the UK or Criterion in the US
I love the scene with the two brother after repairing his lawnmower. That dialogue was great.
The release is stunning. Accolades get thrown around all the time about new 4Ks, but this is really something else. The film has ascended my personal favourites amongst Lynch's work. Farnsworth gives one of the best performances of the 90s and the movie is very moving at several points during it's run time. It does so much with such a simple premise. Lynch is the best!

@@Celestialrob seems we have similar taste in film. I too, love those films in your list especially " Into the Wild" ...come to think of it i think maybe i just love a road movie....i really connected with Paris Texas as a 10 year old and this sparked my curiosity for alternative cinema. I've been thinking a lot about it lately - and come to the conclusion that i am partial to road movies, films about trying to get back home or trying to get somewhere. Gattaca, The Bounty (1984), E.T , The Revenant, Interstellar all 10/10. It takes a lot of movie watching to find a perfect movie . You have to kiss a lot of frogs

Angelo Bandalamenti 's soundtrack is breath taking - and it also has the beautiful Sissy Spacek as Rose. I'm even starting to look like Alvin Straight - i never looked like this 25 years ago :)
The Straight Story is David Lynch’s unsung masterpiece. I can’t wait for the blu-ray.
Criterion has been making their way through the Lynch catalogue at a pretty quick pace. I’ll wait.

Bought the imprint in Novemberish to complete my Lynch collection. It’s serviceable, but I’ve been waiting for this one to come to 4K. Glad to hear it’s a good restoration! Hoping Criterion releases it sooner than later

Hey Elliot, I didnt know where else to put this so I am just gonna say it here and hope you see it. But with the announcement of the Robocop 2 4k I had been trying to see if I could sell my US imported Shout Factory blu ray and I came across Cult-Media and it seems pretty small and unknown at the moment, but they could be great for UK collectors as they buy and sell pre-owned Boutique releases, including imports. Selling imports has been impossible for me as you know CEX dont take them, but basically this looks like this will be how I sell mine going forward and although there is nothing on the site at the moment that I am interested in for myself, their prices seem pretty damn good especially on their pre-owned stuff. Just wanted to make you aware as you are kind of our UK Boutique blu-ray guy. Also I am in no way affiliated with them, I know I kind of sound like an ad for them atm but honestly its just selfish because if more people buy and sell from them then the more selection they will have for me to buy from 😂. No but seriously I just sold them all my US Import duplicates or blu-rays that I have since upgraded to 4k and they gave me a really good and reasonable offer and price for it and like CEX they offer cash or store credit for the items. Honestly it's really great and it's something that I have been hoping, wishing and looking for for the UK for a long long time. Just letting you know, I think this is something we should really support. I want this to work and be successful and find the market. Agin its nothing to do with me personally and they havent asked me to say or anything its just something I found and really want to share.

Imprint did have a bluray a couple years back. I hope the 4k makes its was to the US. Great film.
The Imprint is the same master as the older german blu-ray, which was a real shame as it was advertised as from a new 4K scan. I'm sure this will come to the US in some form eventually. Cheers!
I love this film and, spookily, ordered the German release yesterday. The music's nice too - a simple, but lovely, melody that matches the pace of his journey.

I’m thinking of getting the German release because the non-original title on the French one irks me haha. Could you eventually let me know if the cover is reversible? (as to hide that horrible age rating)

fun (and mad) to see that those studio canal releases with this cardboard packaging have all this crumpled bottom right corner (both my Straight Story and Belmondo's Le Magnifique have them)
I remember seeing it at the London Film Festival. Great film, but Blue Velvet is perfect.
In Europe it's also available in Italy, not only France and Germany. I'm waiting for my Amazon delivery
Great news! This is the only David Lynch I don't have in my collection and I only ever watched it in the cinema. Also, I am relieved this doesn't have the forced subtitles that are too common in French releases. Does it include any subtitles apart from French (I would like to show this to my dad, who only read Swedish)?
My only gripe is that the cover is not in English. 💀
It's not going to align perfectly with the rest of my David Lynch collection and that bothers me. Lol

Hi Elliot, have you yet done a video on "FULL CIRCLE" (AKA "The Haunting of Julia") (1975) with Mia Farrow? It is a new release from BFI and I would be SO interested to hear your thoughts on the movie, the acting, and the 4K transfer and the commentary track. David Alp Leicestershire.
Even if Criterion releases it, they will probably use one of their inferior authoring house again.
Is the Blu Ray included in this one from the new 4K scan or from the previous Blu ray release?
I saw this movie in the theater back when it came out. Very powerful film.
Imprint released a standard Blu-ray in July 2023 from the 4K restoration. I’m looking forward to getting it soon.
The Imprint disc is definitely not from any 4K restoration. Their initial release came out in 2021 before any 4K restoration had been done on the film. It looks exactly like the crummy old blu-ray that I have from Germany. I hope that helps!
I put this in my watchlist the other day, but it’s a bit pricey at £35. My third favourite David Lynch film after Blue Velvet and Fire Walk With Me.

I don’t think so as they usually release in the UK simultaneously with Europe. I bet the rights couldn’t be acquired here in the UK
Ahhh David Lynch is my No 1 all-time favourite filmmaker with his work making me a massive fan of surrealism entertainment. The Straight Story is an incredible emotional road trip film and is one I recommend for newcomers to Lynch's work alongside say Blue Velvet due to straightforward narrative, but for me it's a toss up between either Twin Peaks FWWM or Inland Empire as my personal favourite. I do NOT however recommend going into both these movies right away as first time viewers to Lynch's work though :-)
This is a Disney property in the US. Now Criterion has worked with Disney a couple of times, but that could be a hurdle.

"This is my personal favorite David Lynch film because it's the least David Lynch-ian of all his films." LOL. I liked it when it came out, but haven't seen it since. I'll take Mulholland Dr. any day.
I find it a bit sappy and on the nose at times but there’s still lots to enjoy. It’s just not what I reach for when in a Lynch mood, and it might be my least favorite of his by default.
I thought 4ks were all region free? I keep reading this is region b locked
