- Process of a Pastel portrait from photo.
The portrait was painted by Graciela Bombalova, Bogra art Studio during the sumer 2012. Painted with Schmincke pastels on Canson Paper in about two hours and a half.
To make this portrait I've used a clear tone values on a clear paper. Please feel free to comment and to share.

You are amazing. I love watching your videos! Your subjects come to life before our eyes! I love your choice of colors and techniques of applying them. I would like to know what kind of paper you are using. It seems to hold the pastel well. Your drawing skill and ability to get an excellent likeness are awesome as well.

No I don't. Each portrait is different as each person is too. There is no such groups for me. each person is unique and has unique skin tones, colors, palette, etc. About this portrait I've used some clear "pastel" colors but not too warm..

In which pastel are you doing
I love pastel painting! There are not many good videos and tutorials on the internet about it. It would be amazing if you can make a video tutorial, even a short one, just to give some tips to us beginners. Keep up the good work! :)

Hi. wow another fantastic portrait... just wondered how you draw your faces onto your board so accurately what size did you make the faces...as in what standard size faces do you like to do...hope you understand what I mean...how do you get all the proportions and angles of the face so good....

moi j'aime beaucoup regarder les tutos et ce que je trouve dommage c'est
de ne pas en avoir en temps réel (en non accéléré) car ça permettrait
de voir comment utiliser les pastels (teinte, marque et gestes) , la
gomme et l'estompe. Ce serai très intéressant si quelqu'un pouvait faire

Schmincke pastels are the best in the world!! Really wonderful job, congrats! However, little technical question: how did you use to fix all in place? I always have some problem with those pastels...

All the pencils I use are pastel pencils. Sennelier is kind of hard...you sure? Take a look at the banner in my channel, there you have a palette..

Graciela, I am a graphite artist and have recently tried my hand at pastels.
Your website says you use a spray fixative on finished commissions but most advice I have seen recommends not using any. Can you explain please?

That is a good question. Ok, here is the thing...You have two different (And maybe opposed) ways of thinking on this particular matter. The people that say no to the fixative and the people that say yes. In most of my works, I use a special fixative for Pastel. Pastel is a pigment, and it is delicate. The best way to protect it from scratches, accidents, frictions, etc. is a fixative and of course a frame, glass, and mat. Before doing it, (If you decide to use it) just remember that this can change (darken) your colors! I will probably write a post on this matter for my blog next month or so...Regards, Bogra

A long time ago (30 years!) I made a portrait in pastel. I was, at the time, really pleased with it but hadn’t used any fixative. That is, until I took it in for framing. The frame shop advised me to spray it and, acting on their advice I did. Sadly, the charcoal I had used for the underdrawing bled through and (in my eyes) the portrait was completely ruined. I have been extremely wary of using fixative ever since and, if I make a charcoal underdrawing I always rub off as much of it as I can before starting with the pastels.
Love your work Graciela, you are an inspiration to me and thousands more! (And I also love the track you’ve used on this demo - a huge improvement on the usual, stock “muzak”!)

It is always like that..They will always dark a little...(Il y a seulement une facon de remédier ce problème)...Just try to adjust your colors thinking that they will dark a little when you´ll fix..Regards. Graciela.
