Is it good to go by the rule of not accepting the first offer? What % is safe to ask when negotiating an offer that is not really bad but could be better? I find it hard to believe that accepting the first offer is a good idea.

the rule is that if they are offering you what you asked for, then you take it. If you told them you were looking to be at $85k and they offered you $86,500, then there is no need to negotiate -- you accept the offer. if you counter, then you look unprofessional and greedy.

@@DonGeorgevich no they just gave a range 50 to 90k and I said that sounds fine. I am not going to negotiate for much if I am offered 90k, maybe 15% and let them come back with 7 or 10% which will be ok for me.

that's why it's important to communicate early to them what you're looking for. 50-90k is way too broad. a good salary range should only span 15-20 k. if you agreed to that range and they offered you $55k, then negotiating up to any where 90 is not in the cards.

@@DonGeorgevich Your opinion here definitely different from other recruiters and coached I follow. What I know is to say ok to the range as long as it is not extremely low, and only negotiate or give them a number after the offer, then most likely you get it since they dont want to go back and interview again and you're #1 candidate. I was told that all these questions about salaries from the first call or before the offer are mainly eliminating questions.
But since I know the company now, would applying direcrly or contacting hiring manager look bad? So I am cutting the external recruiter which might help me land offer with more $, but not sure how the employer will feel about it. The recruiter will definitely feel betrayed.
