    Depends on how competent your managers are. Many “managers” are too incompetent/lazy/political to recognize true talents since they don’t have the knowledge or skills for the work themselves. Talented workers want to discuss actual work matters in depth (not small talks); and they don’t need to be managed by “cheerleaders”.
    Managers who know nothing should be phased out and replaced by workers who actually know the subject matters. I’m glad to see engineers become C level execs.

    Most of the points are valid but I have a different opinion on B. I think that rule only applies if the people you are surrounding yourself with are good role models. If not, you will be inheriting bad practices or behaviours.. and my experience is these role models are unfortunately far and few in between.

    I've heard similar concepts before, but the perspective was very different. The version I'm familiar with is "people are promoted when one person isn't doing the same level of work as everyone else but is still valuable to the team, so they get put in an 'advisory' role, which leads to further promotions for them because it's seen as leadership." So I guess what it really comes down to is mindset. Sure, you can be the grumpy and jaded menial worker (lord knows I spent way too much time there), but it does so much mental and career damage to think that way.

    Tangential idea which could make for an insightful video topic: Making the mental shift from a highly technical senior individual contributor to a leader. Personally speaking, I know the greatest challenge of my career has been letting go of the technical components of my identity to create room to rebrand myself.

    Thank you for this video. I learned a lot. But it not easy to be visible to the group of high level that like to smoke and drink. Every night go clubbing / party and it is not safe for female especially. Unless the person pick-up the smoking to be able to join the gang.

    One of my characteristic is not being visible, I know that i need chang it if I want to grow up in my career. When someone compliments me for doing well my job, I feel nervous and anxious, I want to do more and more and I end screwing up, anyway😂

    I don’t think of anyone as a higher-up. Management isn’t all it’s cracked up to be either. I’ve seen too many people bust their behinds only to wind up disappointed. In any case , Iuck plays a much bigger part in ‘success’ than effort and ability. ❤

      This is very true luck and timing and networking and ppl just don't want to accept this harsh reality. That's why ppl force there way to the top but forcing is stressful not a guarantee and wastes time which u can never get back. Corporate structure is nothing but lies and fakes

    I have a colleague who is visible at work abd did what you said but the higher ups did not appreciate her accomplishments abd did not value her. She was let go by the company.

      The one who produces results and is visible will rise above the one who produces the same level of results but it's not visibility
      This is very simple.
      Look around you. This plays out everywhere.

    Another winning video! A question: how does one differentiate between legitimately being noticed and outright brown-nosing to get ahead? I ask this because I’ve seen brown-nosers be rewarded in military and educational venues (both taxpayer-funded), but less in the profit-driven private sector. Thoughts?

    Come work for utilities. Nepotism is written all over on the walls. You have Engineering VPs with BA in history. Why whole family works there etc. most of them are pretty mute and non tech. Unreal

    Higher visibility means more work. I am at the point in my career where I don't care anymore who are the management. I talk to them like a normal employee or the same level as me

    I agree with every point made here. However, it has always been so challenging to force myself to talk to these visible ppl at my Corporate workplace. These higher ups are narcissists and I don't mean to even exaggerate nor sound bitter/negative. For me, staying out of the radar is safer than trying to climb any ladder here. It's time consuming and exhausting realizing intelligence doesn't get you promoted.

      Yeah better to gain experience at one organization and use that to get promotion at next company. Also the higher up you get the more meetings you attend, the more you have to get work out of people and the less work you actually do.

      I hate to say this but where I work, visibility isnt necessary the criteria for career advancement. Most of the time it's usually because someone else resigned/got fired during a crisis and the company had little choice but promote the next available convenient candidate to replace them (along with addition of further headcount). In fact its the concientious high, stable performers (adept at crises prevention in the first place) are the least recognized ones, no matter how visible.

    Anyone focusing on these skills in my company got fired. It is always the manager's responsibility to distinguish who are actually contributing, not the other way around. It is a cancer in company culture that individuals should fight for visibility.

    Great content! Thanks Dr. Lee. Somebody commented what you mentioned here are gimmicks. Actually they are not. All you did is systematically woven it together. Another words the demystified the mystery. It’s better to be intentional and do the smart work and be visible than doing donkey work and cribbing about nobody cares about your work

However there are tremendous efforts and work the individual has to commit to in order to climb the corporate ladder.
