    Barbour makes weatherproof clothing, and I know them for their waxed canvas motorcycle suits which are really tough and super waterproof. You can recondition them by washing them thoroughly and re-coating them with the seemingly alive wax. You can't store it for long because the wax creeps past the lid and forms a puddle around the can.

      True and e.g. ' Père Noël' in France. Most of us in Europe recognise the origins of 'Saint Nicholas', "Gift bringer and patron saint of children".
      Americans, as is their wont, transliterated "Sinterklaas" to 'Santa Claus". I am surprised that the whole 'Jolly fat man dressed in red with fur trimmings' was not invented by Disney or Hollywood!

    The Santa character is off a cartoon called 'Father Christmas' which is written by Raymond Briggs. Yes, you were correct in thinking it's like The Snowman. That's because he wrote The Snowman too. The Father Christmas cartoon, shows a different side of him. It's only on for about 25 minutes due to children's lack of concentration. It tells the story of what he gets up to after he's done his present deliveries for the year till the next Christmas. He's a bit grumpy in the cartoon.

    I always find it amusing that every year adverts feature snowy scenes. With the exception of maybe Scotland, I've never known a 'white Christmas' in the UK - its usually just wet and cold.

    • @rachelpenny5165

      Used to get a white Christmas sometimes where I grew up, lived on the edge of Dartmoor. My birthday is 2 days before Christmas and used to occasionally get snow then as well. Would also get snowed in.

    • @charlottegiles2050
      @charlottegiles2050 3 года назад

      There was snow on the ground on Christmas day 2010 in Leeds - quite a lot of it. I don't think it actually snowed on the day itself though, so it isn't counted as an official White Christmas, even though it was. It's definitely snowed around Christmas time since then as well, but that year there was still a thick covering on the day.

    Barbour is indeed a manufacturer of clothing such as coats (high end, expensive). The Father Christmas animation is from a Father Christmas story by Raymond Briggs, who also wrote The Snowman. The stories were animated in a similar way. In the UK, we call him either Father Christmas, or Santa Claus; either name works. But traditionally we leave him a glass of sherry and a mince pie, not milk and cookies as they do in the USA.

      Father Christmas is a traditional English folk character, who used to be dressed in green though that changed in the 20th century. Being an English tradition, it didn’t feature strongly in Scotland, and so there seems to be a higher proportion of people from Scotland using the American (Dutch) Santa Claus terminology. As was suggested by the Marx brothers, ‘You can’t fool me; there ain’t no sanity clause.’

    The DFS sale ends at midnight New Years Eve and starts again one minute past 12 on New Years Day.
    Carrots the food children put out for Father Christmas's reindeer. Barbour is a clothes store aimed at the well to do. Tesco are nationwide and so using different accents shows this.
    You are right about Aldi and Lidl, they are in direct competition and very similar, supplying cheaper groceries than the other main chain stores.
    Yes Grace, we call him Father Cristmas more than Santa but the influence of American films (not movies) and TV are having affect over here.

    Barbour make traditional British coats and jackets. The Queen has been wearing the same one for decades and was offered a new one by Barbour for her diamond jubilee, but she refused and just asked for her existing one to be rewaxed instead! Also, the ad is an animated version of Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas, the same man who created The Snowman

  • @kwesiidun8512
    @kwesiidun8512 3 года назад

    To answer the Father Christmas question, traditionally we call him Father Christmas in the UK, but now that we're an Americanised society, people here say "Santa Claus", or just "Santa", as well. So both terms are now used in this country, but traditionally he was always known as just Father Christmas. 😃
    Also, the reason why the animation in the Dudley the Sausage Dog advert looks a bit like The Snowman is because the original Father Christmas book was by Raymond Briggs, who also wrote The Snowman.

    The Father Christmas cartoon used in the Barbour ad is based on an animation of a chidren's book by author Raymond Briggs where Father Christmas is depicted as a kind of antihero. The Snowman was also an animation of one of his books by the same people so well done spotting the similarity. You need to check out the Christmas Irn Bru ads which are hilarious versions of The Snowman. They are on RUclips.
