Cowdogs Work as Ranch Hands - Stoney, Annie and Reata - Dagley Ranch Life Episode 21

  • Come along with Reata, Annie and Stoney as we move the cattle to fresh pasture. There is plenty of action packed in this video, with run away cattle, a run away dog, and more. Not everything goes perfect, but we had fun, and we got the job done!
Moving the cattle is not always as simple as opening a gate to the next pasture. For this move we have to cross through intersecting pastures, gates, and roads. There is only one right way for the cattle to go to get there, and it is up to us to guide them.
Stoney is a 15 month old Registered Hangin Tree Cowdog, and Reata and Annie are both Supreme Qualified Hangin Tree Cowdogs. David Dagley has been training them to help gather and move cattle, and they are turning out to be exceptional ranch hands!
    Video taken March 2021.

Brings tears to my eyes to see the beauty of this video . Dogs are an amazing humbling gift from God to us.
Thank you for sharing your ranch life with us. It a form of soothing therapy in this time of world unrest.

You are doing so many things right in your dog training and handling. I'm sure Internet experts are chewing on you all the time for their perceived mistakes.
I'm going to do the opposite. I have seen you in multiple videos let the dog make mistakes and learn from them so they own the decisions. You're asking for them to think and allowing them to figure out what needs to be done. This is key to generalizing behaviors and cow dogs need that in spades.
Then you correct and guide the behavior not punish it. I tell my handlers you correct a ship for being off course, not punish it. You'll just hurt your hand when you spank it as it runs aground.
You're a better trainer than you probably realized. Your dogs are happy and lucky to have such a fair boss.
Please keep training and growing as a trainer.
    Thanks for the entertaining videos.

@@dagleyranch That's not idle praise. You deserve it. I'm a professional trainer of patrol and detection dogs. The difference between a dog that thinks, works independently and KNOWS it's job compared to one you steer the whole time you work it, is night and day. You're doing it right.

The best trainers teach the dogs to think and make the correct decisions without always needing to be”commanded”. You are Brilliant at that!

I’m just amazed at how some dogs understand complex commands obey without any reluctance or hesitation. I’m not a rancher but I had a mixed Jack Russel for 9 years she knew many verbal commands, I told my wife don’t be surprised if she starts talking. Great video I definitely appreciated the explanations of the commands I’ve not heard explications from any other videos.

In my youth we had a small herd of registered Angus cattle, I used a can of grain and called "come bossy" to follow me, even Boar the bull could be coaxed with the can of grain. I laugh at it now. The girls showed calfs at the local fair all 4H members. Thank you for sharing your 21st century herding method!❤🌻

These are amazing dogs!! I have seen Border Collies work many times. Your dogs have the most endurance and never appear winded or tired. This many head of cattle, one man, and only 3 dogs...........a mind boggling display. Watched the AKC agility competition last night. Fun to watch; several breeds and sizes, but the Border Collies excel at this kind of competition. Wondered at the time what a Hangin' Tree Cowdog would do in a situation like that. I am thinking they could be very proficient at it. Wonderful video.

A bull ended up taking me, beginning of January. He broke my ankle and punctured a lung. I am recovering well. And just now in the last week have been able to walk without the crutches and brace. I'm very thankful for the Lord's protection over me, as it could have been far worse.

A bull ran me over broke my leg and collapsed a lung. They got me fixed up with a plate and 12 screws. That was a couple years ago since then I’ve had the plate and screws removed and I’m getting around pretty well.
