People, relax, I had both knees replaced 6 months apart three years ago and struggled to get range of motion back and went through much pain pushing myself through exercises without any significant progress . I gave up in the end having got totally disillusioned. Here I am three years later having done NO exercises but just doing day to day stuff with full range of motion 0-130 with NO DISCOMFORT AT ALL. Just let your body heal peeps .
Those are very encouraging words. I’m 3 months out from surgery and I’ve worked hard to get to 115 degrees. I’ll keep working at it but I stopped worrying and I’m just going to enjoy life. Thanks for the encouragement.

I have Diabetes..After 4 weeks I had my first visit with my Orthopedic Surgeon..After his assessment, he told me he was very disappointed with my range of motion and cautioned me that my knee would heal with a permanent bend if I do not do all of my exercises..He requested that I see him in the next 2 weeks..During that period...I did my flexion exercises and worked through the pain..and I mean I hit the tip of my pain threshold every day..Next visit he was satisfied ( what a relief)..I entered the Outpatient Therapy at 110 degrees by the end of my therapy..I was at 132 degrees..Continuing my therapy at the gym..my range of motion settled at 127 degrees because of the muscle buildup around my Prothesis. In Summary...my doctor scared the living daylight out of me for my first visit...but it was all for a good cause and result at the end.
Thank you for this encouragement! It is discouraging to hear voices that say if you don’t have ROM at 6 weeks you never will. Your reasonable voice is just what I needed to hear .
You are so right. I used your videos post surgery to bring a severely damaged joint up to 120 flex in 6 months. It took another 6+ months and I'm at 130+ flex now. Never Give Up. I work on my knee every day, even if its only a little bit. My top advice is... 1 - Prioritize sleep (when it comes) over everything including knee position at night. You can work on that when you are awake. 2 - Diet, intermittant fasting, healthy fats and protein, no seed oils, helped me lose all the weight and stop joint inflammation. 3 - Watch all of Anthony's videos, you'll find so many helpful gems. I'm eternally grateful.
I'm only at 115 degrees, however my knee was a bit stiff for my last therapy class and I was only at about 110. The therapist worked on my knee a bit with massaging the knee cap, and it increased to 112. Another time it was 114. These days I am flighting inflammation, but still working on knee bending. I have two go back to intermittent fasting, it was great for me.
I am 3 1/2 weeks post op and have full bend at 125 and 7 on the extension. I have been very faithful doing my exercises 3-4 times each day and icing after each session! This surgery and recovery has totally surprised me as I am 73 and have basically been inactive for the last 7 years using a walker, but I followed a lot of your advice and have been fortunate to sail through most of this, granted the first5 days were brutal mentally and physically but since the 7 th day I have only been on extra strength Tylenol and some days I haven’t even needed that! Keep that knee moving!
It has taken me a year to get to the point where I have a range of motion I had before the surgery . I am getting better every day . I am also more active
Tony your informational videos are very much appreciated. I am 59 and 19 days post op. My biggest concern prior to surgery was unmanageable pain and severe constipation. I have been pleasantly surprised that the pain has been tolerable and manageable with a combination of Oxycodone, Zanaflex and Tylenol. I use the Zanaflex about once per day when the and Oxycodone every 4 hours for the first 10 days and now every 6-8 hours. The best solution for constipation has been taking stool softeners daily and a laxative every 8 hours. I was at 86 degrees flexion and 0 degrees extension prior to staple removal. I am now at 96 and 0 and can make a full circle with my operative knee on the stationary bike. It’s a slow process and not always linear. I have found I have good days and bad days, but as time progresses more good days. Positive mental attitude with long term goals is the key to this surgery and recovery. Thanks Again
I'm glad to hear you have good and bad days. Well not bad days. But I am great 1 day and ache and hobble the next. I'm 4 weeks Oct.6 23. I'm glad it's not just me.
Im in phase 3 roughly 15wks post-op. Your explanation makes a lot sense. I was in huge pain in phase 1, so very little ROM. then hit 105 flex in phase 2. Now im between 115 - 120 flex. As the swelling is under control its much easier to exercise & stretch. Also gotta learn the limits & not overdo it.
Thanks Tony, you helped me through a tough double TKR a few years back. I finally hit 125 in my Left and 130 in my Right but then got a little lazy in my exercises. Just got back into them and yes, they had tightened up a bit so you are spot on.

Not to mention the depression I’m just now starting to come out of. I have to find an alternative. I simply cannot do MUA
May I ask the issue with MUA? 🤔My right knee was very bad and for 6 weeks I couldn’t even hit 90 degree flexion. Had the MUA and worked like mad to not lose the results for two weeks and it was very successful.
@@kristenclarke5963 I did the MUA approx 2 wks ago now. I now have 97 degrees of flection, but my extension has gotten worse. I’m working it and pushing hard!!

I’m 8 weeks post TKR and have 122 range of motion which enables me to now bend and tie my sneakers and lower my self back into my Mazda M-X two seater. I’ve been released from physical therapy and will continue the rehab on my own to gain more range of motion. I recently discovered your channel and find it very helpful in addressing questions about TKR surgery and rehab.
Hello, I am 7 wks post- TRKR . I am very discouraged with how slowly I am progressing. My knee is so stiff and sore, I feel like I' ll never get the flexion I need.
Update: I’m now 5 months post TKR surgery. I’ve been doing boot camp type workouts for the last two months and my range of motion is about 90 percent. I also use a stretching straps with loops to help me increase my range of motion when I stretch. I’m no longer in pain and when I get a little sore, I apply ice to the knee for a few minutes. I’m glad and happy with the results from my surgery and wish the same for all of you. It gets better, just be patient and listen to your body.
Not a Knee replacement but a Quad tendon surgery - and I have had 4 surgeries and another clean out artho for a staph infection. The first 3 surgeries failed and my last one in November has partially torn and as I mentioned I went through a staph infections, clean out, and anti-biotic infusions to save my leg. They can do no more surgery on the tendon, and my PT was delayed for the 8 weeks of infusions so I am just getting movement - have finally gotten to 100 degrees but an still making progress and I am 70 as well. Am hoping for at least 5 more degrees in the next 6 weeks and I know I will never get full range of motion but it has obviously taken longer than you say.
I am 6 weeks Post op and when I do heel slides on my back i only get about 90 or 95 degrees. But if I lift my leg into the air and let gravity lower my leg, I get well past, more like 115 to 120. My best with help from therapist is 128 sitting. I give up worrying about all these numbers
I just want to thank you for all of these amazing videos and your kind, caring expert advice! Your videos give me hope--thank you again!
Hi Tony. I’m almost 6 weeks post op left TKR. I have 120 degree flexion now, but the skin/area over the knee still feels tight. Can you explain why this is, and do you any suggestions to relieve or reduce the tightness? Thanks.

In addition, I have been riding a recumbent stationary bike 10 miles a day at resistance level 5 for the same period. And doing static stretching. Finally, through diet, I have lost 20 Lbs and am down to under 180LB. I am 73 and active. Do you think this will improve my post op recovery Time? Would love your thoughts.
Yes, the more is the range of motion and strength of 'knee supporting muscles' is there, better is the recovery. Just stay positive and true to your body
I get the flexion and an hour later I'm stiff. But my function at 10 weeks is so much better therefore I quit stressing over it. I stretch. Walk every day, take water classes etc.
Iam 3 month post operation. My knee is healing well but I have not been able to walk w out having lots of pain afterwards , how much can I walk. , I live in NYC walking is important to me. Thank you ! Please talk about this
I'll be 4 weeks out Oct.6. I'm so worried. Although my function is improved I still have pain and burning especially on the lateral upper leg. It fatigues me.The PT wasn't aggressive at all but the next day the pain was worse. I'm at 108 degrees. I'm not sure on extension. I do all I can. Walking. Heel slides etc. I'll be able to start the pool in a few days and hope that will help. Uggg.... I have to go back to work. I have no option.
Age may make it more difficult. But no. Muscle is muscle regardless of your age and it can stretch. Maybe some exceptions but an old man can learn yoga and teach himself the spilts if he really wanted to.
I had tka 2 years ago- great results as far as extention/flexion however, after about year, flexion begin to decrease, now flexion is top at 113 w/pain , push to 120 max and immediately return to plateau of 113. I call it a lock not stiff- ortho and pt cannot tell me why
@@totaltherapysolutions initially, I had localized heat, no pain, it went away but the “lock” has continued- Perhaps the plateau of 107 flexion is “decent” but the fact that I can’t put my pants on, get in my car, is unacceptable. There are many bacterial infections that could affect the new knee. Also sensitivity to the implant material could produce symptoms similar to infection, but it is not infection.
I am on week 6 after TKR. I was doing real well until PT had me do leg press with 40 lbs of wt. I think he set me back a week. We will be having a talk today.
That happened to me on a different apparatus. One where I bend forward and pull back with weight. I will not do that one again. It kept me from being able to do other exercises.
10/5 1:40pm. I had my TKR done 15 weeks ago. I have worked religiously through rehab during that time. Have been at home for last few weeks. Mine fluctuates. As high as 121 and as low as 105 the last few weeks. Is that normal?
It's two months since my left tkr I can bend to the fullest but am in severe pain when I walk. My right knee was done in November 2022 and its doing well. Why am I in pain mostly when I start walking
Thanks Sir. I just had knee surgery a week ago and the pain is unbearable. I get up move with walker consistently and try do the exercises to precribed from the therapist but o cant seem to keep my right leg(surgical leg) straight so it can be strong as my left leg. My right foot has a tendency to try to lay on its side to gain comfort. Any advice. Also, im buying a wedge if that will help. My pain pill can only do so much.
Day 3,4,5,6 were horrific for me. If the home PT hadn't warned me I would have thought I had blood clots or broke something and call an ambulance. I was sweating. I'm coming up on 4 weeks Oct.6. I still have pain but not severe. Hopefully you are all recovered!
Hi, i just wondered how you are getting on now 10 months later. Im 6 weeks post my TKR and although managing well im still struggling to get past 80 degree flexion. Ive got to see the physiotherapist next week. Knee is very stiff but i will get there in the end!
@nicolaspencer I'm doing fine with my right knee. It's fully healed. I'm about to restart the process with left knee. Trust me I'm not looking forward to the recovery stage but I'm bone on bone now with my left knee. Knee injections are not helping.
@nicolaspencer .....nic u will be fine. Continue doing ur therapy , rest, and exercises that the therapist tell you to do so u can strengthen and straighten it. Best of luck.

Hi Tony thanks for sharing all your experiences and knowledge. I’m 4 months out RTKR 0 extension 120 flexion.
@@alw1268 its great that youre right knee has recovered, having to go through it again is a horrible thought but i think im in the same situation. Since ive had my left knee done my right knee is really starting to hurt now, im not sure which is my good knee anymore!.. going upstairs..good leg first..i havent got a good leg!.. hopefully mine will settle down once my operated leg heals more and im not putting so much pressure on it. Good luck with yours.
Hi Tony thanks for sharing all your experiences and knowledge. I’m 4 months out RTKR 0 extension 120 flexion. However when I’m lying on my back with my knees towards my chest , my surgical knee only bends just over 90 😕 . I put ankles weights on it and let gravity help for potential flexion gain. Would you be able to help me understand why my TRK flexion isn’t 120 when I’m lying on my back?
Thank you.
Hello 😊4mouths TKR, MUA, at 9 weeks PT everyday and still struggling at 85/90 degrees, my surgeon wants me to have another MUA, but told him I don’t want one ☝️ he won’t listen to how I feel a and say😢your videos give me hope that my knee will get better ❤️🩹 it’s always tight and stiff, my surgeon tells me if I don’t get a MUA it will remain tight/stiff, I just don’t know what to think 🤔???
Hi how are you doing today? Is your knee better at bending? I'm 6 weeks post op and have to get an MUA soon as I got sick 4 days post op and lost 10 days of exercise moving my knee and developed scar tissue
@@toryberch Did you get your MUA? I am scheduled for one on 3/4. I'm 7 weeks PO and have not been able to get above 95 flexion. I am very nervous because I hear mixed results on the MUA.
@@mothra_superior666 Hi 👋👋 yes I did and I am so glad I got it!
I was the same way I couldn't get beyond 95
I had so much scar tissue built up. I had no problem
It's a very quick procedure and you will be going to PT daily at least I did. I went 5 days in a row to get the knee moving again. I'm at 115 now. I had my MUA on Jan 8. Also if you have access to a knee bending machine I highly recommend it.
