That was the intention. Linear gameplay and cutscenes. Unfortunately it failed. Thankfully, they recouped and went back to the proper Hitman formula with the WOA trilogy.

It was my first hitman game, I was 11 and wanted to play hitman so i looked on the disc games shelf in my home and saw hitman absolution for PS3. Played the hell outta it.
By far one of my favorite levels, and one of my favorite speedruns. That level was too good. You can spend more time playing Berlin than youll spend on entire campaigns in TripleA games
The new Hitman games are as the short describes perfect, they’re probably the best and funniest games in the series, I still laugh at the electric chair kill in the murder mystery level in Hitman 3 because that photo is just so good

In my opinion, the best in order are: - Silent Assassin (Gripping story from start to finish, always felt on edge & probably the one Hitman game in which you the Hunter felt hunted too which made for an exceptional thrilling experience throughout). - Codename 47 (Yes, because it was ahead of it’s time, way way ahead of games in 2000 & the story is brilliant!) - Blood Money - Absolution - Contracts (ranked last because of the use of redoing some old missions but great nontheless. The new one’s are all masterpieces too but it would be unfair to rank them in the same group as the originals.
I don't think it's unfair to rank the new games with the old ones, honestly. I think Hitman 3 is the best Hitman game, but Hitman 2 and Hitman all have places they fit in. Hitman 2 isn't as good as Silent Assassin but I think it's better than Codename 47, and same with Hitman if for no other reason than its gorgeous cutscenes and Providence.

It's not that it was linear, for me at least, it just felt like a generic action game. They were clearly inspired by the change in direction with Splinter Cell and tried to do what ubisoft did. Wasn't what most fans wanted from a Hitman game.
I'm getting nostalgic, but i love how io interactive gives us amazing hitman games for 20 years now. You remember every one of them if you played and mastered it. Thats really different approach to, for example, ubisoft's assassins creed that published new games each year or two
OG hitman 2 will always be the best one for me. Its was hard to get SA and disguises could easily be seen through, others made it too easy with disguises. The music is top tier too
I GREW UP with Contract and Silent assassin. Played since I was 6. My dad used to play them and I was watching him, slowly learning how to play too. Now, after years I reinstalled them and they're still absolutely beautiful.
Codename 47 and Silent Assasins are the best in my opinon.. Soundtracks, gameplay, everything fitted perfectly.. It brings me back so much memories when i was a kid.❤
Here's a hint from a guy who just started playing ABSOLUTION in 2024. If your tired of having to watch the movies before the levels, just hold circle after the bar code goes away. I was getting annoyed by having to rewatch these long cinema scenes and i tried every button... Lol Not until level 8 i found out you can just press or hold circle O, and your in the game mode.
The main thing I dislike about the new trilogy is that Jasper Kyd didn’t do the music for them. I listened to the slaughter club song from contracts again recently, and it’s still a banger to this day. “I have chosen to embrace it”
IOI making 007; just the perfect choice really It will be interesting to see how they tackle a more action oriented game design approach, but having Super Villain targets in massive bosses, using the Hitman disguise system, it's literally perfect.
