    Note
    1) tape off any hinges
    2) sand door and wipe off after
    3) make sure there's something under to catch any paint but also to keep the door from moving
    4) paint edges
    5) paint the things that reccess with brush
    6) use roller cover rest of door (when doing edges you don't wanna have a lot of paint on the roller)

      Hi! What grit of sandpaper do you use?

    • @AquariusGate
      @AquariusGate 3 месяца назад +1

      @hollyedwards1084 his foam block was 120 grit. 80g =120g to start 180g - 240g after first coat. The rule is to use the highest grit number (smoothest) to do the job.

    I have smooth, 6 panel doors. I sprayed most of them with a paint sprayer but I did have to do a couple by hand. I rolled them and then back brushed them. That gave me a finish I was happier with than just rolling. Floetrol and water to thin was also my friend.

    Ive been a contract painter for years and never had to use paint extenders or cond8tioners. Warming your paint is a good tip = pop the lid first!
    Its all about keeping a wet edge you can work to. For doors i go down to below the door handle. This is where my wet edge begins to fail. I work from the bottom up to blend both halves of the door. If there is any rippling in the finish its below the sight line. Thats how City and Guilds were teaching it in 1986.

    When finishing with the brush, paint is harder to work with because it's drier by then. Is this to be expected or should I add more paint to the brush? Yes, I do use Floetrol.

  • @slh48
    @slh48 4 месяца назад

    I never seen that stuff you add it to the paint to give you more time to work that’s great I strain the paint every day I’m working as soon as I see the paint dry on the sides of the Duce bucket it’s winter time in Maryland where I am from but when the sun comes threw the window and I have to keep the heat at least on 70 degrees because of the dogs when I’m working I get hot and there’s a lot of sun coming through the windows in the family room so I got to make sure I keep the paint out of it in the shade and in the room that’s cool and what I’m not using take it down to the basement
    Are used to strain the gallons into a 5 gallon home depo bucket but much easier to do 2 gallons at a time in a white deuce bucket def gona try that I can’t remember the name offhand to make you be able to work with the paint longer
    Since I am paint my family room so often and I use eggshell on the walls and eggshell on the trim I will paint the trim first then just tape the top of the trim then I always I have white Duce bucket for every color so i can keep the paint strain and using eggshell is like using semi gloss I’ll let it dry up in the sunlight take it up to the sanitary sink run hot water and peal it out most of the time I get most of it out of there and if I don’t I just keep a plug in the sink so that dry paint don’t go in the sink
    You have some great videos I always learn somthing new every time I work in the house 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏

    Great tips. My only change is to actually remove the door for its prep work (filling dents/scratches, sanding, priming, first finish coat, etc. - all the messy stuff can be done outside). Then rehanging the door for its final coat as per the rest of your helpful hints.

  • @J1122

    LOL man like me went took the whole door off then came looking for tips duh. Mind you my place was built in the 60's the internal doors have had at least three coats of gloss over the last 60 years or so. Over the last year or so they have gone a custardy colour ew. I started stripping the paint with a heat gun; the previous muppets have painted over the hinges (I got them off). My door will be stripped ready for gloss real soon and then I have another 3 to do afterwards - give me strength! Thanks for the tips nonetheless! I do have a question; we are from different countries me being in the UK but i wanted to know if they changed formulas with gloss paint in the US? Here they don't use solvents anymore (I believe) so the gloss turns quicker as it loses colour and turns custard. Any tips appreciated.

    Do you have a link for the 5mm nap roller you mentioned?
    I've now spent longer on these 3 smooth, hollow-core, pre-primed doors than I have painting an entire 2-bed apartment, and I feel utterly defeated.
    I first used a Wooster Pro "smooth to semi-smooth" roller and got a consistent finish .. however it left so much stippling texture I just couldn't believe it, like the texture of a bath towel.
    I really didn't want to rent a sprayer and deal with that whole hassle, so I tried this 6 1/2" Wooster Pro "smooth surfaces" sponge roller. After half a gallon of paint and three days of experimentation, I've not been able to get the roller to leave a consistent finish - no matter what, it leaves evidence of where it's been.
    Using Glidden semi-gloss.
    I've tried:
    -Floetrol
    -varying pressure in my arm
    -varying speed, from measured & steady to as-fast-as-I-can-physically-move (slightly better results, but flung paint specks 12ft+ around the whole room)
    -different ambient temperatures from 64-70F
    -soaking the roller vs. drying it out before pulling paint
    -gobbing the paint onto the door in one go then spreading (big mistake, obviously)
    -applying just enough paint in small sections at a time
    If/when I ever get the paint to roll out consistently in one section, the roller always leaves a pronounced line at its edges, making overlapping impossible. The only thing I can think to do at this point is to dump the rest of this bottle of Floetrol into the remaining paint, get the largest "smooth to semi-smooth" roller I can find, then roll the door as quickly as possible and hope the Floetrol will prevent such pronounced texturing. Maybe even lay the doors out horizontally on a table so gravity will pull the paint flat.
    So, I'm intrigued that you mention a roller with a nap for a smooth door rather than a foam one, and at this point I'll give anything a try. Cheers.

    Tip, 5? Use a small amount of Vaseline on the hinge side door edges to keep the paint from peeling when you're significant other or kids (never you) close the door to soon before completely dry, or when hot and muggy, etc. to avoid peeling on the edge and having to paint it over, and over, and over. "You're welcome." (Say that last part like the woman in My Cousin Vinny when on the stand). ;)
